2020: A Novel | Kenneth Steven
10 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
In the tradition of 1984 and It Can't Happen Here, 2020 is a timely dystopian novel about a country divided, a terrorist attack, and an populist leader who promises he alone is the solution. In 2020, Britain is at a breaking point. Years of economic turmoil, bitter debates over immigration, anger at the political elites, and fears about the future have created a maelstrom, a dis-United Kingdom, with citizens tempted to find easy answers in demagoguery and isolationism. The country is a bomb waiting to explode. Then it does. A major terrorist attack targets a sleeper train traveling between Edinburgh and London, leaving a staggering number of dead and wounded. Investigators soon identify the culprits as a radicalized group of young British Muslims. Horrific images from the attack and speculation by the media fan worries about further terrorist acts and the danger of an enemy within. In the aftermath, two far right organizations join to create a new radical group called White Rose, promising to stand up for English values. An unproven leader vows thathe can fix the nation. As the nightmare unfolds, a myriad of voicesfrom across the social and political spectrumoffer wildly differing perspectives on the chaotic events . . . and unexpectedly reveal modern Britains soul with 20/20 acuity. Thoughtful, compassionate, and provocative, Kenneth Stevens 2020 is a parable for our times.

Trying to simplify things this year. Give myself time to savor what I read vs. rushing through it too quickly.

Taking advice from @MicheleinPhilly and setting a super-low goal for 2020. This year I resolve to enjoy the reading journey of the chunkster instead of reaching for short books just to track an arbitrary number. Here‘s to 2020! 🙂🙌🏼

MoonWitch94 I set the identical goal last year & I surpassed it by several books. Quality not quantity is what I‘m doing this year, too. 4y
Balibee146 Quality not quantity and getting chunksters off tbr mountain is my 2020 plan too 👍 4y
TrishB I never set one! 4y

Wonderwoman89 I set mine to 10 4y
Lcsmcat I‘ve lowered mine the past few years for the same reason. Although my average page count doesn‘t show it because I read several Shakespeare plays a year, I have been more ready to read chunkster books lately. 4y
lahousewyfe I'm with you, but reading deeply. Even getting through 50 last year felt like I was pushing myself to read quickly instead if absorbing the lessons contained within each work. 4y
Chab256 Mine is low too. I read 14 books this year and set a goal for 20 in 2020. I like the chunkster idea! 4y
Tanisha_A Love that! Kudos! 4y
Tanisha_A @TrishB High-5! 😁 4y
LeahBergen I always set mine below what I read in a year. 😆 4y

Up until now I've set it at 52 (one for each week) and ended up with 100-115. This year I'm symbolically setting 12 - one per month. While I'll still input all of my reads (mostly because I like that GR tracks total page count), my thought is to attempt a chunkster for each month. Aiming for at least 12 books that are at least 750-800 pages or more.
(edited) 4y
Amiable @TrishB Does GR still track total page counts for the year if you don't set a challenge goal but you input your books read? I like the page count totals at the end of the year and the average page count per book. I didn't know if GR would still do that if you weren't tracking a challenge. Next year I might just set my goal at 1 book! 4y
TrishB I don‘t go goodreads, have never liked it. I keep my own book journal, I keep a count of pages myself but don‘t do all the other bits (though I could mostly as I keep the info!). 4y
Amiable @TrishB I should try to get better at using spreadsheets to track my stuff. Then I wouldn't need GR. Maybe that will be my resolution for 2020! 4y

Andrew65 @Eggs @Crazeedi @MoonWitch94 @umbrellagirl Thanks 😊, I wonder what 2029 will bring book wise. I am looking forward to getting to the new Patrick Rothfuss book in August. Been a long wait. 4y
Andrew65 @ShelleyBooksie Thanks 😊 4y
emmaturi Good luck! That is huge amount! 4y
gradcat @Andrew65 Are you ignoring me? I hope I didn‘t do something wrong...I‘ve left a couple of messages on your posts, and the posts of others inquiring about your health, but I haven‘t heard back from you.... 😞 Good luck on your 2020 reading goals! (edited) 4y
veritysalter How exciting to think of all the fabulous stories waiting for you. 4y
Suet624 Best of luck! 4y
Andrew65 @emmaturi Thanks, I‘m aiming high. 😊 @Suet624 @veritysalter It should 🤞be a great year. 4y
Andrew65 @gradcat Not at all Minette, I wouldn‘t do that and you most definitely have not done something to upset me. 🥰 It has Ben cry bust over the past few days with the Readathon and trying to respond to all posts for the Readathon, setting up the annual challenge on Librarything, finishing off books for the end of the year, finalising challenges firvthe end of the year and family commitments. Just completed another 250 round trip drive. 4y
Andrew65 @gradcat I saw the post asking how I was and meant to come back and post without seeming to be negative or morning, and with everything it just slipped through the net. Sorry. 😔 Been another difficult couple of weeks with health issues where pains have got worse again on trying to change medication to improve it. Hope you are well yourself and Happy New Year. 🥳🥰 4y
Andrew65 @gradcat In relation to Aimee Leduc I am happy to continue the series and read them with you when I can get hold of them. Books 6, 8 and 9 are the only difficult ones to get hold of but have asked the library to buy them. 🤞 4y
Andrew65 @gradcat This is one of the annual challenges I have set up for 2000. http://www.librarything.com/topic/314751 4y
gradcat @Andrew65 Oh, of course, you‘ve been busy. I think I was making it all about me, but in my defense, you‘re usually sooo good about responding to posts. I should have realized how busy you‘d be at this time of year, plus I was aware of the Readathon, of course—Sorry! And I‘m so sorry that the medical staff cannot find anything that works for you—must be awful during holidays when food seems to be everywhere! Going to check your link now. Good 2020! 4y
Andrew65 @gradcat I am but amazing how much it took keeping on top of a 5 day Readathon! But I do love doing them. Food over Christmas been very basic my New Year‘s day meal was boiled Chicken and Jacket Potato! No wonder i‘ve Lost a lot of weight. Happy New Year. 4y
gradcat @Andrew65 I hope you‘re not losing too much weight!? 4y
Andrew65 @gradcat Lost up to two stone over past 5 months. Losing about 1/2 pound + a week but monitoring it. 4y
gradcat @Andrew65 Did you need to lose weight? I mean, is this the silver lining? 4y
Andrew65 @gradcat According to the weight charts online we can all do with losing weight!!! Generally I am eating more healthily, a lot more fruit, and virtually no sweet stuff or fizzy drinks so understandable the body is readjusting. Apart from the pains I feel healthy enough and was one of the few people to avoid the awful flu and gastric bugs going round during November and December. 4y
gradcat @Andrew65 Good on you, Andrew! I, for one, need to lose weight for sure! But is it terribly boring? What do you eat besides fruit and boiled chicken? 4y
Andrew65 @gradcat Have started eating some beef. Mainly salad, jacket potato, odd bit of mash, vegetables. Limiting myself to two slices of whole meal bread a day to limit carbohydrates. Still have odd curry, sweet and sour but both chicken based, hot cross buns, in sweet area just mainly sone light tinned rice pudding. Avoiding cakes, sweets, biscuits altogether. Nuts, dried fruit. Very occasionally the odd bit of bacon. Porridge. Cheese but lower calorie 4y

Set in Britain in the near future with lots of angst and political division due to a terroristic event. It would have been more interesting if written in a different format, and easier to follow.

The whole book was a series of interviews about current events. The interviewer isn‘t really present, as if on the phone and we can‘t hear them. You aren‘t even told who‘s speaking each time - you have to figure it out.

Not my kind of book.
