Today‘s nap-time read. Looking forward to a quiet weekend after being on-the-go almost nonstop since August. I‘m about a quarter of the way into this one & really enjoying it so far; the protagonist Ariel (Hebrew pronunciation, not Disney) has such a clear voice that makes it very easy to fall into the story.

Wow. School Stress these days. “They make us think the grade is more important than the learning, and that‘s messed up. We‘re all overwhelmed. You‘re not alone.”

But on the bright side. Flirting by quoting Harry Potter. 🧙‍♂️

Slajaunie It‘s not about the grade either. It‘s about the test score. ☹️ 4mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Slajaunie I don't have children so I don't know anything about this in real life. I realize this was fiction but I was appalled by the fact a High School kid was getting 5 hours or less sleep at night so he could keep up with all his classes. 4mo
Slajaunie I have 3. This can be true if the child wants to do well. I am also a teacher at an elementary school. The stress of school goes all the way to kindergarten these days. 4mo

This is the first time in years that I finished a book in one sitting (& of course stayed up way too late). The emotions & anxieties Ariel feels because of his deep-seated need to succeed are SO relatable. It put me right back into my HS mindset where I stressed about getting good grades, to get into a great school...
The LGBTQ relationship in here was also so swoon-worthy! And powerful friendships. Plus so much diversity seamlessly interwoven.

This book was absolutely AMAZING. Queer Jewish boy dealing with the bullshit academic pressure put on high school students is totally my jam. Even better, Ariel is a religious Jew who obviously finds great comfort in Judaism and the Jewish community. Do you know how rare that is in media of any kind?? In a lot of ways this was a love letter to Judaism and it was so beautiful.

irasobrietate I especially liked that Ariel's queerness wasn't an issue at all. His family and community accepted it as part of him. I feel like every time I see religious queers in YA it has to be a struggle so seeing Ariel just be bisexual with no negative commentary whatsoever was great. 8mo
Kaylamburson I just finished this book and I agree 100%! I also loved that the diverse characters didn't have to struggle with racism or anything else, too! It was strong story that just happened to have diversity and mirrored our own society. 8mo

This was really safe YA that deals with MC Ariel (hard r, boys name, we‘re not talking mermaids) Stone puts so much pressure on himself to be perfect and be valedictorian and get into Harvard. But with all that pressure maybe he‘s missing the important stuff. There is a very cute Harry Potter-themed gay romance. Beautiful Jewish culture in here (ever since watching Kissing Jessica Stein I‘ve been on the lookout for that Jewish family in NM I 👇🏼

Reggie can bully into inviting me over for a Seder or a Shabbat just to see and hear the prayers). Most shocking in here is a Muslim kid whose hobby is photography whose whole family supports a photography future but he is angry because he has a closet dream of becoming a doctor. WHAT?!!!lol. Even though it was safe I enjoyed it and was emotional. And the author had 3 whole pages of acknowledgments and even includes a Matzoh Ball soup recipe. A Good, (edited) 10mo

It‘s nice to know almost 12 years later after the last book came out, kids use Harry Potter to flirt with each other over tutoring.

Reggie @DivineDiana @readordieracheal later on the guy who isn‘t into Harry Potter aces his calc test and tells the tutor, “I feel like I just passed one of my O.W.L.S.” Lol 10mo

A quick read that did an excellent job of capturing the pressures of wanting to be perfect and trying to balance it all. It was thought provoking especially as a teacher when you see the students who already struggle with not being perfect. “They make us think the grade is more important than the learning, and that‘s messed up.”

The amount of adorable scenes in this book was almost too much. Almost. Being a veteran AP student myself, I connected with Ariel so much. I loved the characters, the romance, and the beautiful friendships and family love.

Kaylamburson I went to her book launch the other week, and I'm so pumped to read this! 11mo
bookranters I thought it was great and I'm not usually into this genre. 11mo

Ariel is a high school senior trying to make his college resume perfect. He is taking all AP classes, first chair violinist, volunteering and the list goes on and on. But it all starts to fall apart when he fails his AP calculus quiz. So he decides to get a tutor. The more he gets to know is tutor Amir they more he starts to like him. But when everything starts to become to much Ariel has to realize what is really important in his life!

Tamra As I read your description I was thinking. “Poor kid, that‘s not a way to live life as a young person.” Then I got to the end. 😊 (edited) 11mo

My senior year of high school, one of my classmates cried every day in AP Lit. Another classmate gave herself an ulcer. I remember the pressure, the constant second guessing if you made the right choices for classes and extracurriculars. And it was nothing like it is now. I sped through this because it really hit home. I was Ariel, and Amir, and Pari, and Sook, and I just wanted to gather them up and hug them.

I loved this YA novel about a young man struggling with extreme anxiety about schoolwork. It‘s something I can completely relate to and the characters felt so genuine. Full review on my blog now!

I don‘t always request galleys, but when I do it‘s likely that I have 4 other books in progress and all my library holds have come in at the same time. 😂 🤷🏻‍♀️

RadicalReader @Mem_ugh what is your most highly recommend YA book? 13mo
Mem_ugh @RadicalReader that is such a hard one! It completely depends on the person honestly, I do a pretty in depth readers advisory interview before recommending. I have most recently recommended Sadie, The Hate U Give, I‘m Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter and Tyler Johnson Was Here to several people though 13mo

I liked this. Didn‘t love it. Ariel is one stressed out kid, and he stressed me out a bit too. I am sure many high school students could relate to him, and it reminds me a bit of myself in school as well (but more extreme). I do feel that this story has been done before though. There‘s no big surprises at the end. :) Still an enjoyable and engaging read.

Ran out of books at work tonight so decided to start this #netgalley ARC. It‘s short, and so far good. But the main character is stressing me out.

LiteraryinLititz What‘s the premise? There isn‘t a Litsy description. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y
MelissaSue81 @LiteraryinLititz - MC is a hs senior, trying to be valedictorian, get into Harvard, etc.. I‘m only about 1/4 way in, but so far he‘s stressing out and struggling with keeping up with everything and there is also a love interest involved 1y
