Your House Is on Fire, Your Children All Gone
Your House Is on Fire, Your Children All Gone: A Novel | Stefan Kiesbye
Shirley Jackson meetsTheTwilight Zonein this riveting novel of supernatural horrorfor readers who loved Ransom Riggs Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar ChildrenA village on the Devils Moor: a place untouched by time and shrouded in superstition. There is the grand manor house whose occupants despise the villagers, the small pub whose regulars talk of revenants, the old mill no one dares to mention. This is where four young friends come of agein an atmosphere thick with fear and suspicion. Their innocent games soon bring them face-to-face with the villages darkest secrets in this eerily dispassionate, astonishingly assured novel, infused with the spirit of the Brothers Grimm and evocative of Stephen Kings classic short story Children of the Corn and the films The White Ribbon by Michael Haneke and Village of the Damnedby Wolf Rilla. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Strange, but in a very good way. Comparisons to Shirley Jackson and some of the darker Grimm‘s Fairy Tales are apt, but the novel is also somewhat Faulknerian. I was also reminded of The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosinski. I don‘t like horror, and this doesn‘t quite go there, but flirts with the macabre. The writing is delicious. Recommended!

The content of this book is just as unsettling as the cover, with shades of the more brutal brothers Grimm stories. Childhood friends come of age in a small, remote village steeped in superstition and darkness. The back cover compares it to Shirley Jackson, Stephen King‘s Children of the Corn, and The Twilight Zone. Seriously creepy vignettes.

It‘s strange what passes for “normal” to the characters in this book and that is what I suspect draws the comparisons to Shirley Jackson. The horrors are committed by the people of an isolated German village and recounted by the five of the characters as children. And that is what makes this so creepy.

And because Halloween is never over, I‘m starting another book that @TheWordJar sent.
Tried to capture the glossy hidden text but I‘m lacking a good light source. IF YOU TELL ON ME YOU‘RE DEAD

This is so cool, @TheWordJar 🖤
Black cats & pugs! Squee! I‘ve been dying to read the new Paul Tremblay and Ludmilla Petrushevskaya. Also excited about creepy kid fiction. This author is totally new for me. And classic Richard Matheson is lovely too.
Thank you for all the goodies! Expertly chosen. I love everything 🖤🖤🖤 #allhallowsreadswap

TheWordJar I‘m glad you like it! You were so fun to shop for! I couldn‘t resist the pug book. Nature‘s fiercest beasts! 😂 5y

This was, uhhhhhhh, something. Definitely not the horror book it promised to be, but it is a definitely a dark, unsettling book about a damned town and it‘s morally corrupt citizens. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is the other book I received from @Kaye for her #50kgiveaway. How creepy is this cover?? I‘ve never heard of it before, but being compared to Children of the Corn, it sounds right up my alley! I‘m going to have to cover that cover when I read it though. As if the girl isn‘t creepy enough, there are gloss letters that show on the matte cover when you look at it at a certain angle, and it says, “If you tell on me, you‘re dead.” 😱😱😱😱😱

Beware of small towns. This particular small town is especially f***ed. The children are creepy & the townspeople are jealous & capable of anything to put their rival in their place. This story follows 4 friends (Christian, Linde, Anke and Martin) as they grow from disturbing kids to vengeful adults. These kids would give the Children of the Corn a run for their money.
PS I can't decide which of the 2 covers of this book is more nightmarish. 😱💀

Creepy title, creepy premise, unsettling story. When the worst part lurking under a town are the human inhabitants itself. A dark story that will change your ideas about small towns.
