Betty Crocker's Picture Cookbook
Betty Crocker's Picture Cookbook | Betty Crocker Editors
10 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
It's the book that started it all, the well-loved edition that first bought Betty Crocker cookbooks into American homes and hearts. Published in 1950, this ground-breaking title made cooking easy, it made cooking appealing, and best of all, it made cooking fun. Packed full of practical tips, useful hints, and lavish color photography, this was the book that shaped cooking for generations, the book that people remember. Every recipe you -- or your mother -- ever wanted is here, from pigs in blankets, to Emergency Steak to Chicken Tomato Aspic. Enjoy the clever ideas throughout -- twelve months of birthday cake ideas, showing how to decorate a cake to match each month's gem stone, pointers to make setting up a kitchen easy, or hints to make housework more pleasant. Feel a part of history when making Home Front Macaroni, developed during WW II rationing to stretch meat. Get into the spirit of fun with a Betty Crocker "Cookie Shine" or cookie baking party. People who grew up with this book will want it for the memories; those who are new to the book will want it for its charm and its intelligent approach to cooking. It's a perfect keepsake and a great gift.

Nope, cannot be bothered with all the fuss & truss. I remove the innards, heave into roasting pan, slather with butter and in it goes! 🦃

Aimeesue I always wonder, when I look through old cookbooks, they did things in such complicated ways. I wonder if it has to do with the way we process turkey, etc. now, as opposed to the times when you'd get a local minimally processed bird? (We're going with turkey roll-ups – sliced turkey breast rolled up with stuffing in the middle with gravy on top – because that's what the family asked for. 😄 1y
Tamra @Aimeesue I really don‘t know - that‘s a good guess. Maybe home cooks like me have decided they don‘t care how the bird looks? 😅 Oh yum - roll ups! Super idea! 1y
Larkken Its so intimidating! I have grown fond of quartering and brining. Or just cooking a breast 🙃 1y

Never in the 34 years we‘ve been married has my husband asked me to make pot roast. Probably because it was weekly fare when he was growing up. Now out of the blue he has a craving. Maybe the sudden fall temps?

I thought I‘d see what the 50‘s Betty recommended and the horseradish is appealing! 😋 I‘m not crazy about plain meat & potatoes.

Kappadeemom Make it in a crockpot! Brown the roast on the stove and then put it in the crockpot with onions, veggies, a pack of ranch dressing dry mix, a pack of brown gravy mix and a small jar of peppercini peppers with the juice. The best! 2y
Kappadeemom Make sure the jar of peppers is small or use half a big jar. The cut up peppers are better 2y
Tamra @Kappadeemom that is delicious! Mississippi pot roast with the peppers? 2y

slategreyskies @Kappadeemom wow, that sounds so good!! :) 2y
Kappadeemom Yes, it‘s Mississippi pot roast although I‘m from Georgia…lol. If you don‘t like the peppers you can buy a jar of Heinz beef gravy and use it instead. 2y
Tamra @Kappadeemom 😆 I love the peppers! I have made it and it‘s fabulous. 2y
Aims42 Oooo I love horseradish so much, this sounds like it could be a winner 🙌 2y
Tamra @Aims42 imagine if I had fresh horseradish! 2y
Aims42 @Tamra 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤 I‘d be over in a heartbeat lol 2y
mcctrish I make pot roast once a year and horseradish sounds brilliant 2y
Dragon Sounds so good! 2y

This is for @AlaMich 😁

Mostly black & white photos and brown/rust shaded drawings throughout. Must have been quite the modern thing in 1950!

Caucasian representation, no surprise there.

AlaMich Thanks, @tamra! It seems to me that the average ‘50s housewife probably wouldn‘t NEED all those instruction photos. 2y
Tamra @AlaMich totally! Maybe the new housewife? 2y

All of you know how I 💜 cookbooks, but I‘m not really a vintage collector given my cuisine preferences nor am I overly sentimental about them. However, I saw this one in an antique store today and it was obviously so well loved by a home cook I couldn‘t bear to leave it homeless. Rarely do I find a lonely object that calls to me.

Soubhiville This book fed a happy family for decades! ❤️ 2y
AlaMich I‘m curious about the “picture”aspect…could you post a pic of a page? 😊 2y
LeahBergen Aww, how lovely! 2y

Every week or so I am going to attempt a recipe from my grandmothers cookbook in memory of her! She always made the best pea salad!!!! 💕
It's fun reading this recipe book and seeing all the stuff I've never used in my own recipes.

Texreader I hate peas. I love pea salad! I‘ll have to make it again. And I LOVE this idea! 2y
Suet624 That‘s very sweet. 2y

Pulled this out of the trash bin at work...no idea what I‘ll do with it cuz it‘s basically in pieces but I couldn‘t stand it going in the garbage.

tournevis Look through and scan the best recipes. Skip the jello salads, perhaps? 5y
chyepanda Probably going to scan the recipes I like. I think I‘ll take it apart after that and use what I can‘t for bookmarks or something there are a lot of good illustrations in it. 5y
AWahle The brownie recipe is a good one! It‘s the one I used as a kid. 5y
Clare-Dragonfly This does seem like it would be great for crafting. 5y

1. Tagged! It was a gift from my great grandma before she passed years ago and I love it.
2. No
3. Antoni Porowski or Alton Brown
4. Cinnamon rolls dunked in chili. I never considered this weird until I met my husband and he was appalled 😂
#ManicMonday @JoScho

JoScho I‘m not judging but that is a little weird 😂 6y
LizzieChantree I‘ve never heard of cinnamon rolls and chilli before. Both good separately, so why not together! 😂 6y
PathfinderNicole @JoScho I think it‘s a localized thing because my elementary and high school served them together and it‘s just what everybody did 😂 6y

#OldCoolBooks #bookspines
My Betty Crocker & Better Homes & Gardens cool "retro" cookbooks-with a Campbells Soup cookbook thrown in. These mainly run from the mid 1950s to late 70s & they & their mostly binder-style book spines make me happy & nostalgic because they remind me of growing up & my mom's kitchen. ❤️I noticed a few are missing-probably on a shelf in another room. (Someone desperately needs to re-organize her shelves! ??????)

Kappadeemom I have all of the Southern Living Annual cookbooks every year since 1989 😍 6y
Pamwurtzler You have some great cookbooks! 6y
tstan All those jello recipes! 6y
