Puerto Rico Strong is a comics anthology that explores what it means to be Puerto Rican and the diversity that exists within that concept, from today's most exciting Puerto Rican comics creators. All proceeds go to UNIDOS Disaster Relief & Recovery Program to Support Puerto Rico. Despite being a US territory, Puerto Rico is often thought of as a foreign land, if it's even a thought in the mind of the average American at all. Its people exist in all corners of America; some of them have parents who immigrated from the home island, others are a part of families that have been on the mainland for generations. Then there are those who have come to the states in search of a dream but struggle to integrate into an unfamiliar culture, while there are those who have lived in the United States all of their lives but still have the same struggle because of the color of their skin or their sexual identity. These stories follow individuals from diverse walks of life but are all part of the culture that is Puerto Rico.Puerto Rico Strong features art and writing by Rosa Colon, Vita Ayala, Naomi Franquiz, Javier Cruz Winnick, Sabrina Cintron, Ronnie Garcia, Fabian Nicieza, Joamette Gil, and many more!

I bought this comic way back in 2018 when it was sold to raise funds for hurricane-decimated Puerto Rico. And I just now read it. So for charity, I give it a million stars. But viewing it as simply a comic collection...it is uneven, as any collection from various contributors is bound to be. But I learned so much about Puerto Rico's history, of which I knew almost nothing. Tbh, I didn't even know where PR was on a map. I had to google it. 🤦‍♀️

This adult graphic novel is an anthology of #ownvoices graphic short stories about Puerto Rico written partly to raise political awareness & relief money after the hurricanes. The 1st half of the stories are fictionalized accounts of different parts of Puerto Rico‘s history, & the 2nd half are more personal, family centered pieces that delve into contemporary culture. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

IndoorDame Each story is by a different author and a different illustrator, so you get a range of voices & artistic styles. Even the stories on topics I was already familiar with had new things to teach me. I‘m really glad I decided to pick this up. I‘m finding that when they‘re well done, like this one is, the graphic biographies and histories coming out lately are an excellent format for a visual person like me who never much took to history as a child. 2y

“I mean, nothing can be achieved without the diaspora. NOTHING.” Watching the Teach-Out put together by the U of Michigan and Notre Dame, Listening to Puerto Rico. 🇵🇷

abbielistenstobooks Cool cool is this happening at ND? 5y
kgriffith @abbielistenstobooks yep it was; it‘s all online now and we‘re using it as part of the curriculum for one of my classes 5y

When I made myself get honest, I knew the only reason I wanted to postpone this class until fall is that I haven‘t been fluent in Spanish in 25 years and I hate making mistakes. But I can‘t do it. I can‘t not go. I dropped Women‘s and LGBTQI Rights and am taking two classes: Queer and Trans Writing, and Teaching STEM in Puerto Rico. 🇵🇷 I‘ll be there in July to run a science program for girls, which we‘ll prepare over the course of this semester.

saresmoore These courses all sound amazing! And it‘s super cool that you‘re doing this. 5y
kgriffith @saresmoore there‘s literally nowhere I would rather be, and to be able to be part of a community both on campus as we prepare, and on the island, just feels so huge. 5y
Craftylikefox That sounds absolutely amazing! You will do great 😊 what an amazing chance to make a difference 💕 5y

Today's #bookhaul between Target and BAM. Hoping my son reads all the younger level graphics so it makes me look less guilty of stockpiling books 😬🤞🏼 I mean his bday IS coming soon...

vkois88 Moana! 😍😍 6y
gibblr @vkois88 The cover is rough cloth material and it's so pretty. I love Moana and HAD to have it! 6y
vkois88 My daughter is going through a definite phase right now... but I've always loved it!!! I first saw it right after it came out on Blu-ray. I even have my mom hooked on the Funkos. Pretty sure she's going to get Te Fiti before me 😂😂 Which store did you get it from? Target or BAM? It sounds beautiful and I collect the novelizations of a lot of the Disney movies... I'm a huge Disney fan ❤ 6y

WanderingBookaneer I loved The Outsider. Puerto Rico strong made the independentista in me proud. Some stories are not good, but the historical ones are great! 6y

Hey #graphicnovelsnews is here. Did you see Puerto Rico Strong comic anthology from today‘s most existing Puerto Rican comic creators? They explored that it means to be Puerto Rican and the diversity that exists within that concept. All profits go to Disaster Relief & Recovery Program for Puerto Rico. Despite being a US territory, Puerto Rico is often thought of as a foreign land, if it's even a thought in the mind of the average American at all.

Eyelit I got this a couple weeks ago - looking forward to reading! 6y

As a lesbian, I have always recognized the importance of the #WeNeedDiverseBooks movement. However, I had never considered how, as an adult, I needed to see my culture, my history,my viewpoint, until I read this collection.
Profits go to Hurricane María relief efforts and, trust me, we still need them. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My copy finally arrived. This a powerful example of all the good that can come from the comic book industry putting their minds together with a common goal. A long list of wonderful writers and artists have contributed to this anthology. The proceeds will be supporting disaster relief and recovery in Puerto Rico. Go get your copy. You get wonderful stories and help out people in need at the same time. What‘s not to like?!

If you want to know more about the contentious relationship between Puerto Rico and the U.S., several artists tackle some of the most repulsive acts committed against our people, like the forced sterilization of women that went on for decades. Not all the comics are political. Profits go to Hurricane Marìa relief.
