From the author of the critically acclaimed Under a Painted Sky,an unforgettable story of determination set against a backdrop of devastating tragedy. Perfect for fans of Code Name Verity. San Francisco, 1906: Fifteen-year-old Mercy Wong is determined to break from the poverty in Chinatown, and an education at St. Clare'sSchool for Girls is her best hope. Although St. Clare's is off-limits to all but the wealthiest white girls, Mercy gains admittance througha mix of cunning and a little bribery, only to discover that getting in was the easiest part. Not to be undone by a bunch ofspoiled heiresses, Mercy stands strong--until disaster strikes. On April 18, an historic earthquake rocks San Francisco, destroying Mercy's home and school. With martial law in effect, she is forced to wait with her classmates for their families in a temporary park encampment. Mercy can't sit by while they wait for the Army to bring help. Fires might rage, and the city may be in shambles, yet Mercy still has the 'bossy' cheeks that mark her as someone who gets things done. But what can one teenaged girl do to heal so many suffering in her broken city? Breakout author Stacey Lee masterfully crafts another remarkable novel set against a unique historical backdrop. Strong-willed Mercy Wong leads a cast of diverse characters in this extraordinary tale of survival.

My third Stacey Lee book read for #SundayBuddyRead & another great story from this Historical YA author. Set around the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, it features 15-year-old Mercy Wong who is trying to get herself & her family out of the poverty of Chinatown by using ideas from a women‘s business book to get into an elite boarding school. Mercy is a great character & I loved her bravery & wit. Lee makes history come to life for both YA & adult ⬇️

DebinHawaii …audiences. The #SundayBuddyRead discussions led by @TheBookHippie always enhance my appreciation of the book. I will continue to read more from this author. 10mo

“We are led to fear the wrong things”
Powerful quote. So many in this book but this one seemed so timely!!!

Both of the authors notes so powerful I hope you read them!!

We are reading one of her books next February -The Secret Heart of a note- I have to say I love this author.

Karisa Looking forward to reading more Stacey Lee. I‘m adding Downstairs Girl to my tbr too. 10mo

AmyG OH NICE!!!!!! 10mo
kspenmoll I always read authors‘ notes- they reveal important info. I ‘m happy to hear she as another book out! (edited) 10mo
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll I‘ve found especially in YA the author notes seem to be very good. Or it‘s just the authors I read! 😂 10mo
Sargar114 @kspenmoll @TheBookHippie I love reading them in historical fictions because I like know what really happened and what they took creative liberties with. It‘s so interesting. 10mo
DebinHawaii I love the author notes! The Downstairs Girl remains a favorite for me. I think it was one of the first #SundayBuddyRead books I joined in on because I had gotten it through #BOTM I also want to read this one 10mo

Ba
And
Tom
Woe
But also awe warm fuzzy love ♥️♥️👏🏼👏🏼
And I love that her mom had her hand in it ♥️

This was very lesson filled about love, think the YA crowd will feel it?
We need a tie up nicely 🎈

How did you like the ending ??

Sargar114 Again, a little sappy, but good. I really enjoyed the misdirection thinking that she lost her father as well. It was well done and really kept you on your toes at the end of the book. 10mo
mcctrish I did like that Ma had a hand in this ending ( the weight of her fortune telling seems like it could drive a lesser mortal insane ) this was a really good YA story and I think easily appeals to all ages 10mo
AmyG Again, the ending worked for me. I am so happy Tom was ok. And there was some sadness….Mercy‘s Mom and brother died. So not totally sappy! I kept wondering, in true YA fashion, if the headmistress and Tom‘s dad were “hooking up”. 🤣 10mo
See All 11 Comments
kspenmoll Her mother‘ teachings/ fortune telling was such an influence on Mercy‘s beliefs. I was happy to have her be there in the end. I did not think it was too Sappy- losing everyone may have been more realistic but I was glad Ba & Tom appeared, especially after she thought her dad was dead. 10mo
Sargar114 @mcctrish that was a nice touch. @AmyG I thought that too!!! 😂😂😂 10mo
mcctrish @AmyG women of means can do what they like right?! 🤣🤣 10mo
DebinHawaii @AmyG Right?! 🤣 10mo
DebinHawaii I liked the ending & was happy her father was alive. Tom too of course, but I figured he would be. I loved that her mother had a hand in it. 💙 10mo
IndoorDame Somehow Ba and Tom being alive and them all finding each other didn‘t strike me as quite as sappy as all the girls offering her homes and the hot air balloon. It‘s a sweet way to wrap everything up, but it also underscores the unpredictability of disasters like this. 10mo
mollyrotondo I really thought her father had died when she found the body at the hotel wreckage. I‘m glad he wasn‘t dead but it would have been more realistic if he did die. @AmyG definitely believe the headmistress and Tom‘s dad are developing a relationship! Lol 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Mistress Crouch & Ah Suk's situation-ship cracked me up. I love that he knew English all along, too. I really though Ba died and thought we have to at least get Tom back. Maybe a little sweet & tidy at the end, but the book shed light on a topic I really didn't know about, so if love is in the cards for them in the end, I'm glad for it. 10mo

Elodie and friendship ♥️

Kates Gran is the author of the book the book for business minded women by Evelyn Lowry
And then she meets her -how sweet ♥️

All the girls asking to take Mercy in♥️

Too sappy? Personally I‘ve found when kids aren‘t told to be prejudice and meet and help someone different they‘re 99 percent of the time like the book (until these last five years- now othering is out of control.)

Thoughts?

Karisa It all felt a bit too good to be true with a hot air balloon to be the cherry on top. It was sweet though. Maybe Lee owed it to her readers after mistreating loved characters in the Titanic novel. 🚢💔 I think you are right about kids—at least until the adult prejudices reach them, they‘ll be kind. 10mo
Sargar114 This is where the YA part starts to lose me, but it was fine. If it wasn‘t YA, I‘d have more of a problem with the snappiness and everything tied up so neatly. (The connection with Mrs Lowry was a bit much for me, though). I agree, hate is learned. Even Elodie didn‘t really hate Mercy, more upset with her father and taking it out on her. 10mo
mcctrish All the girls saying Mercy could come with them seemed a natural reaction to all of the challenges they faced together. The miraculous hot air balloon seemed a bit more contrived but I love a happy-ish ending as much as the next person 10mo
See All 12 Comments
AmyG Too sappy? For some reason this all worked for me. I loved these characters and just wanted to see them all do well. 10mo
kspenmoll I loved the characters & thought it was a nice tie in with the book that helped Mercy become an advocate for herself, then others to meet her heroine in person. This is the author‘s 2nd book we have read- I loved the other one too. 10mo
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll third!!! Did you read The Downstairs Girl with us?? I do love this author! 10mo
kspenmoll @TheBookHippie Yes, I did read it with this group & so enjoyed it. 10mo
DebinHawaii I am okay with a little sap 😉 & things coming together, especially when I love the characters. I do love this author too! My Kindle had an excerpt from this one in it. If we don‘t end up reading it for #SundayBuddyRead at some point, I am going to read it on my own. 10mo
Larkken @Sargar114 yes, very YA! Maybe even MG… in that context I didn‘t mind too much 10mo
julieclair I loved most of the sappiness… even the balloon… but meeting Mrs. Lowry was a bit over the top, even for me. (edited) 10mo
mollyrotondo I loved that the girls created a bond with one another. The balloon and the Mrs Lowry parts were sappy though 😂 still love this author though lol 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick You can't introduce Tom with his hot air balloon and not get the payoff so I expected this aspect of the finale. It was nice that the girls all offered Mercy a place to stay, especially Elodie. They may not end up besties, but I think they have similar goals and challenge each other to make the other better. I wasn't expecting Katie's gran to be Mrs Lowry but that connection cracked me up. Lee took Ma & Jack from Mercy, so an easy end is fine. 10mo

The cow and the deaf man..a lesson???

White Lady three times 🫥
Strawberry Hill

A bit of fantasy here!!!
What happened to the cow ?!?!?!

Karisa Odd sidenote story but fun. It‘s like the cow popped in there just for when they needed her. The Lady in White haunting is SF folklore: https://hiddenca.com/strawberry-hill/ 10mo
Sargar114 What is with #sundaybuddyread and cows???!!! 🐄 10mo
mcctrish @Sargar114 🤣🤣🤣 10mo
See All 19 Comments
Sargar114 That is one loose end I wish I knew the answer to, what did happen to the cow???? I was worried it was something bad but I wonder if they just moved on and the girls‘ (I forgot who followed them) fear and probably exhaustion made her imagine things. 10mo
mcctrish @Karisa I was hoping the dead man did come back for his cow and she didn‘t just get stolen or wandered off. The White Lady seemed a slightly bizarre detour but she probably was even more talked about at this time with so many people homeless and feeling unsafe 10mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼♥️♥️♥️♥️ thanks I was a bit busy fighting democracy this week to do links 😵‍💫🤪 10mo
AmyG @Karisa….good tidbit about SF lore. Ha, the cow. I would like to think the deaf man and his cow just walked off to safety. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 we have had cows in so many stories!!!!! 😅 10mo
kspenmoll The cow saved Mercy & friends initially. The deaf man‘s gift. I too would like to think the 2 survived. 10mo
DebinHawaii I decided that in my mind at least, the deaf man reclaimed his cow & they disappeared into the San Francisco fog, together again. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 10mo
DebinHawaii @Karisa Thanks for the link! 10mo
Larkken Oh, Forgivus ❤️ I‘m glad the deaf man didn‘t need to have another rough encounter just to get his cow back 10mo
julieclair I love @DebinHawaii ‘s image of the cow and the deaf man walking off into the fog together! That‘s the ending to the cow mystery that I‘m choosing to believe. 🐄🐮 10mo
IndoorDame I wonder how many urban legend ghosts you call with that formula…? I grew up in the era of the older girls at sleepovers daring you to call Bloody Mary in the mirror, and that was pretty much exactly how she showed up 🤣🤣🤣 10mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame 😂😂😂😂😂👻 10mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I like your ending!!! 10mo
mollyrotondo @DebinHawaii I like this ending too. A happy ending for the two. I‘m glad she brought the deaf man back to get his cow but just wished his story was wrapped up a bit more clearly lol 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I like to think the Deaf Man came to claim his cow and sow her benefits to others in need. The White Lady story was a cute little diversion and a neat way to tie the story into the locale. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I liked the typical kid like fear thing!! 10mo

Poor Francesca 😡🤬
Then she rises up!!! ✊🏼
Womens choices of mates. It‘s just so very sad and also scary..

The Headmistress
Well welll wellllllll
“I am a woman of considerable means, not just a woman who is considerably mean…” 👀

Honestly I was howling with laughter!!! I can‘t believe she rescued them!

Thoughts?!

Karisa Love that line of the Headmistress and can at least appreciate a character that has some self awareness. 😂 Francesca could have her own book for sure. Great character! 10mo
Sargar114 I loved that self awareness from the headmistress. I wonder if some of the hateful things was exaggerated by the pain she was in as that is quite the turn around. Francesca is wonder and agree would read a standalone story of her…maybe opening her restaurant! 10mo
mcctrish The headmistress really came into her own with that comment 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤣🤣 it‘s unfortunate that what is considered a ‘good‘ marriage is often not #givefrancescaabookofherown 10mo
See All 11 Comments
AmyG That line made me chuckle. I love how this tragedy brought out the best in all of them. 10mo
kspenmoll That was the best headmistress quote. Francesca is a wonderful character- agree with @Sargar114 that she could be another book! 10mo
DebinHawaii I loved that comment from the headmistress. It was good to see her change & grow & be aware of herself with humor. And I agree with everyone, Francesca should have a book! 💜 10mo
Larkken Yay for the headmistress redeeming herself! And Francesca is a dear. I hope she gets her own restaurant. 10mo
julieclair I agree with everyone‘s comments about both the headmistress and Francesca. Such interesting characters in this book. 10mo
mollyrotondo The headmistress really surprised me by the end. I‘m glad she started to open her eyes by the end. The Francesca story got a little wobbly at the end. I loved her character but she gets attacked by Marco, saved by the Headmistresses, then agrees to marry Marco to save Merch, gets taken by Marco, and then all of sudden is back and just says I told him no. Little abrupt to wrap it up at the end lol but I really loved her friendship with Mercy. 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I warned up to the Headmistress a bit near the end. That quote and offering Mercy a place to stay, while helping rebuild St Clair's together, was some nice character development. Marcus was the effing worst. I'm glad that Francesca was able to ultimately deny him, but like @mollyrotondo said, it felt a little too easy for her to do so. Maybe he's lying in a ditch somewhere. 😆 10mo
mollyrotondo @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick we can only hope 😂 10mo

Karisa Happy Birthday!!!! 🎊🎈🎂🎉 🥳 10mo
Karisa (I liked that quote too but then immediately thought of Sally Hemings and her children with him…) (edited) 10mo
mcctrish Happy Birthday 🎂 it is a shame we often need a tragedy to be/do good 10mo
See All 13 Comments
Sargar114 Happy Birthday! I loved this, it was a good way for Mercy to deal with her grief and in a way honor the loss of her family. 10mo
AmyG Happy Birthday! I always try to judge people on what they do, not what they say. 10mo
kspenmoll Happy Birthday! I too loved how Mercy handled her grief my scouring for food with Francesca & making a meal for all! 10mo
DebinHawaii Happy Birthday! 🎈🎂🎁🎉 I was saying “but it didn‘t last” in my head as I was reading the sentence. Always a pity. The dinner & the people coming together was one of my favorite parts of the book. 10mo
julieclair Happy Birthday! 🎈 I loved the feeding of the 44. Such a positive thing to do in the midst of great tragedy. I really admire Mercy. And Francesca too. 10mo
IndoorDame I wasn‘t around yesterday, but happy belated birthday! It reminds me of the community fridges and food sharing apps that popped up in major cities during lockdown, but also (mostly) fell out of use 10mo
mollyrotondo I hope you had an amazing birthday! I loved how many people the girls ended up feeding by the end of the day and how many just came to enjoy the music and the sense of community. It was really beautiful. Unfortunately it doesn‘t last. Look at us after Covid. We have gone back to our same bad behavior. But this was still a beautiful part of the book. 10mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I think it was my favorite part. I love birthdays. 🎈 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick These young women pulled off something really great! Feeding 44+ in those circumstances couldn't have been easy, but they made it happen. It may have only lasted a few days, but to the few people they were able to help, it probably meant the world. Food in your belly & comraderie can move mountains. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I love it so much!!! It‘s my favorite part of the book. Closest to my heart. 10mo

Stacey Lee writes riveting historical fiction featuring Asian American characters. This one is centered around a driven, fearless teen growing up in San Francisco‘s Chinatown in 1906 who seeks a quality education. Our #SundayBuddyRead group also read Lee‘s book Luck of the Titanic last year—also fantastic with an equally brave teenaged hero.

Karisa Another connected historical fiction (for kids) set in SF‘s 1906 earthquake is Dragonwings by Laurence Yep (reads like a companion book). 10mo

Earthquakes, hot air balloons, chocolate, and bossy-cheeked girls, oh my! Glad I could get this historical YA set in the San Francisco of 1906 from the library in physical book form just in time for the May #sundaybuddyread - I was able to flag some of my favorite quotes. I def cried through the last quarter, but Mercy is a generous and kind heroine and this bighearted book is just right for an AAPI YA (& maybe MG?) read.

paper.reveries This sounds like so much fun! Would you consider the writing more YA or NA? 10mo
AmyG It was a wonderful story. 10mo
Larkken @paper.reveries good question! The writing felt on the young side of YA, but not young in tone and the book also deals with weighty issues like racism, classism, and death of loved ones. 10mo

Another solid read from Stacey Lee. Mercy is a teenage Chinese American in San Francisco in 1906. She is a wonderful character, bold, caring, and unwilling to accept the status quo. When she wants something she works to get it, no matter the odds. Things don‘t always workout, but she perseveres. A good YA read that touches on real life experiences and emotions. What stuck out to you?

The looting was interesting- the army etc ..

Francesca I‘m still a fan !

I‘ve no idea how this wraps up 🤷🏻‍♀️

I do think this should be taught in depth more in school…

vlwelser I love Francesca. This book is lovely. 10mo
mcctrish I love Francesca too @vlwelser I think the enforcement against looting is insane! Now it shouldn‘t be a free for all because that could go sideways fast but all the food going to waste when everyone is now a couple of days past eating a normal meal is just unconscionable. And food delivery is still at least a day off or more 😢 10mo
kspenmoll Love Francesca. I hope she escapes her arranged marriage. Too strict re: looting- considering your posted article when. a man was shot carrying food because the store owner opened up his store for all. 10mo
See All 12 Comments
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll reminds me of the saying nothing truly changes which ugh how awful … the minuscule forward motion of rights for all and compassion and empathy advancements wear me out 😵‍💫 10mo
DebinHawaii Francesca is such a great character. I love the partnership & friendship between her & Mercy. The soldiers & the looting enforcement is crazy. I was so tense during those scenes & that poor dog too. 😩 10mo
AmyG Francesca is a gem. I think many things will change for these girls…for the good and worse. This event and experience has brought them together and I hope they form a strong bond because if it. 10mo
Larkken Love this so far! In awe of the authors ability to roll so many weighty topics in so effortlessly. 10mo
Karisa It is an interesting time period and coming at it from the perspective of an Asian American teenager is great. I attended a teaching conference last year for Asian studies in K-12 and was struck by how little representation there is in the curriculum. Many of the organizers had tears because they said it was a first for them (conference of this type). Lisa Ling was a keynote and said she didn‘t see herself in CA history until college trip to Locke 10mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa it‘s amazing how much we have all learned from her books. It‘s such important history. 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Francesca is great and I wish wonderful things for her. I hope she can avoid an arranged marriage. The accessibility of food and the no looting rules is fucking abhorrent. If the store wasn't demolished by the earthquake, the product isn't going to last long anyway. Just get people fed. I know I'm looking at it with modern eyes and ability to make the change, but I'd not want to rebuild in a town that reacted in that manner during crisis. 10mo
mollyrotondo I also wonder how this will wrap out. But I absolutely love this author‘s storytelling and how excellently she weaves Asian American history into her books with amazing female roles. I‘ve loved every one of her female leads in all three books we‘ve read so far. 10mo

Elodie
Mercy-I never said you didn‘t have a heart, but it would be nice if it beat every now and then…
SO using this phrase in my future 😅🤣
The butcher
The ring
The fall down the hill
The five dollars 😅
Laughing crying

Elodie‘s mom
How sad…

Will they be friends ?!? Do you like Elodie yet 😅?

vlwelser I also love the quote. I think Elodie might turn out ok. 10mo
IndoorDame Not sure if the girls will be braiding each other‘s hair, but yes, I think they‘ll definitely respect each other by the end 10mo
mcctrish It‘s hard not to become a piece of work when your parents are but Elodie might come out of this trauma a better person. 10mo
See All 10 Comments
kspenmoll Great quote- so many in this book- Mercy is quite a character. I think these two will respect each other if not anything else. 10mo
Sargar114 Elodie is definitely redeemable. I like that Mercy doesn‘t always like her but takes the time to empathize with her situation and that really is beneficial to their partnership. 10mo
DebinHawaii I love that quote too! There‘s a few people I‘d like to use it on! 😂 I do think Elodie will come out it a better person. She & Mercy do work well together even if they don‘t ever become friends. 10mo
AmyG I always felt Elodie and Mercy would form a bond. Perhaps this is the start? They now have more in common than ever. 10mo
Karisa @AmyG Yeah, I thought there were glimmers of mutual respect at least. @IndoorDame braiding each others‘ hair 🤣🤣🤣 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Wait, is there a deleted epilogue of Elodie & Mercy having a slumber party in Du Lac's rebuilt mansion? 🤣 She's clever when she needs to be and has the air of a socialite with influence...I would like for her to use that for good and not evil. Can the chocolate shop be of any use to them? I want to see these two young ladies at least have some mutual respect and be little business mavens, if not have a true friendship. 10mo
mollyrotondo I can‘t say I like Elodie now but I understand her having a bit of a chip on her shoulder. I have way more respect for her mother now. She made sure she had a hand in that business in order to take care of herself. And she knew her husband has a mistress and that if he was doing it without worry then she could have a relationship with another man too. Good for her. But Elodie needs to stop taking her anger out on everyone else. 10mo

Leeching the teacher 😵‍💫

Thoughts on the teacher 👀

vlwelser OMG. I loved this. They knock her out, use leeches to force her blood to do whatever (recycle?), then she wakes and makes friends with the man that can bring her tea (who she just hated 5 seconds ago). I mean they could have just left her like that but they are better people than she is. Clearly. 10mo
IndoorDame She seems SO overwhelmed! I wanted to just hate the teacher, but this section made me think about all the things teachers today have to deal with that are in no way reasonable, and I couldn‘t help but have a little empathy for her 10mo
mcctrish As a teacher myself @IndoorDame you are a better person than me. I hope the leeches sucked the misery/intolerance out of her as well as regulating her blood pressures 10mo
See All 17 Comments
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame @mcctrish I want to ask her “Who hurt you? Someone must have for you to act this way!” 👀😵‍💫😂 10mo
IndoorDame @mcctrish 🤣🤣🤣 I may not be a much better person. I only said I managed a LITTLE empathy (I teach too and I may have been super frustrated with the end of this term) 10mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame 12 full 2 half days left here!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉 10mo
IndoorDame @mcctrish awww, see, it‘s really @TheBookHippie who‘s the good person here ❤️ 10mo
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie omg! Yay!!!!!!!!!!! 10mo
mcctrish 🤣🤣 @IndoorDame I have 26 days and one report writing day left 😢😢 and I wonder @TheBookHippie if it wasn‘t society itself that hurt her ( and all the other women) by limiting everything they ‘can‘ do so they/she can‘t let anyone take what little they have away #strongertogether ✊🏻✊🏽✊🏼✊🏾✊🏿 10mo
kspenmoll @mcctrish The leeches! The only way they could help her heal…😂 I agree with your thoughts re women‘s very limited role in society & how scripted everything had to be. I totally disliked her until this when u saw her vulnerability. 10mo
DebinHawaii I am hoping she surprises us at some point & gets beyond some of her prejudices. @mcctrish I laughed at the leeches sucking out her misery/intolerance! 😆 10mo
AmyG I was thinking of the arrogance and forgetfulness of the teacher. Does she forget who she is…but now that she works for “rich” kids she has become entitled as they are. Leeches! Made my skin crawl. Not a bug fan. 10mo
Larkken I am pretty conflicted about this. I hate the idea of her not being able to consent to treatment! But the fact that she can be so beastly to mercy while she‘s so great to Francesca just makes me want to throw her in the lake for the other leeches. 10mo
Karisa @TheBookHippie 10 more days, 3 more half days, 1 fieldtrip, and 1 PD day (☹️). But I have the students putting together a student-written play based on the adventures of Odysseus with some musical touches, so I‘m happy 😅. 10mo
Karisa @DebinHawaii Right?! I keep hoping that the headmistress will turn it around in crisis like the head nurse in the St. James asylum ghost mystery we read. I‘m starting to give up a little hope though after what she said to Mercy 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I don't like this lady in the slightest, but I respect that she's still (sort of, half-assedly) looking out for these girls. Maybe Ah-Suk can make her a kindness tea next. The leeches were gross, but it needed to happen. She's at least an authority figure to potentially deter unsavory characters from harming these young ladies so I'm glad she's there. I won't hold my breath at redemption, so I'll settle for her being mildly useful. 10mo
mollyrotondo I hate this teacher because she uses corporal punishment on girls who are there to learn how to serve tea and impress the boys at the boys school or wherever their from. Ridiculous. This is not a reformatory. But I do appreciate that she didn‘t just abandon these girls after the earthquake. She is sticking around as their caregiver. The leeches were so gross. I hate bugs of any kind and would never want them put on my body 😬 10mo

The cow!!!!! Her owner 😭😭😭
No different than today..
Expecting the worst of someone just because their skin is different than yours …
I was so gutted… forgive us..

https://www.usgs.gov/publications/san-francisco-cow-did-she-or-didnt-she

https://annetkent.kontribune.com/articles/8959

https://www.sfgate.com/sfhistory/article/Did-the-Great-San-Francisco-Earthquake-...

kspenmoll That poor man was trying to be generous & share his milk but because of the color of his skin was run out- the cow saved so many. I hope he survived but I have my doubts. 10mo
IndoorDame The scene with the cow was beyond upsetting!!!! I really hope the author circles back around to her owner. I keep worrying about wether he‘ll decide to return for her or not… he‘s risking his life if he does, but he‘s probably risking his future financial security if he doesn‘t 10mo
vlwelser Forgive us is right. I love the cow. And feel terrible for its owner. 10mo
See All 13 Comments
mcctrish I thought it was so interesting that only Mercy was paying attention enough to clue into Forgivus‘ owner being deaf. Because she had to always be aware of danger, she paid attention to details. I hope we see him again and he can be invited to dinner 10mo
Sargar114 @mcctrish well said, I hope he shows up to the dinner too! 10mo
DebinHawaii That scene upset me so much. I do hope the owner is ok and comes back but sadly, it‘s probably more realistic if he doesn‘t. 🥵 10mo
AmyG I wonder how much has changed since then? Not much. They way people treat others can be disgusting. Mercy is very kind and intuitive. Yes, she pays attention. It will get her far in life. 10mo
Karisa Yes, I agree with the rest. The cow scene was so sad and disturbing. It was odd but possible at the time I guess. I think @IndoorDame is right, he‘ll return for Forgivus if he can. A cow is too valuable. I wonder how close the farms were to Golden Gate Park at the time too? 10mo
Larkken @mcctrish ooo I hope so! This was very upsetting 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick My heart hurt for that man. He's trying to help these young ladies, and he's accused of much worse. I 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I hope he shows up at dinner or later to retrieve the miracle cow. 10mo
mollyrotondo Uhh this scene was so awful. I felt sick for this poor man. The articles about the cow being swallowed up by the ground were very humorous though. The one account of the man remembering overhearing the neighbor say he had to bury a dead cow and told the reporters what they wanted to hear as to not spoil a good story was a riot lol 10mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I had a lot of fun on the rabbit holes with this book! 10mo

kspenmoll Thanks for the articles. From what one stated, its sounds as though survival for the Chinese was more challenging as their segregated camp was further away from food & medical help. i wonder if any medical people went into the camp. For the elderly and injured, it would be challenging to get the help they needed. Someone would have to carry them? This is when someone as creative & enterprising as Mercy is needed. (edited) 10mo
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll I‘m thinking like now their treatment was probably not really good. So very sad. 10mo
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie so sad! I was reading those articles, wondering about how our response now would compare and just thinking about post Katrina and Puerto Rico rebuilding 10mo
See All 17 Comments
vlwelser They were already dealing with a hefty amount of racism. This is just extra gross. 10mo
IndoorDame @kspenmoll exactly! It‘s tragic that in the real world so many of our characters would have had really tough odds of survival 10mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser so powerful for the YA reader to take in. I think it‘s a good snapshot for them to read and take in. 10mo
mcctrish I‘m wondering if this is why one of Francesca‘s ‘boys‘ was giving Mercy the looks? Curiosity at meeting a real Chinese person or thinking she belonged in a different camp ( same as Ah-Suk I guess) 10mo
vlwelser I think this author does something great with her books. She takes historical events kids learn about in school and adds an extra layer to the story, telling it from the point of view of a marginalized character or set of characters. 10mo
Sargar114 Agreed @vlwelser she does a great job of applying perspective. 10mo
DebinHawaii @vlwelser @Sargar114 💯 I love that about her books. 10mo
AmyG @vlwelser Yes! Teaches history along with the story. I can‘t imagine what was going on back then. People can be ao kind and yet so cruel. I will never not be surprised by that…and angered. 10mo
Karisa The other historical fiction book for children set in this time centering around Chinese immigrants shows this spirit of helpfulness in the park too. It also shows the Asian Americans being forced to segregate by the army soon after the disaster. I‘ve been waiting to see if this book with show that side of things soon. 10mo
Larkken The historical nuggets are incredible! I was curious about the explosions being mentioned and found a story saying that dynamite was used to create firebreaks after the earthquake 🫣 https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/The-Great-Quake-1906-2006-The-dynamite-disas... 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick It's just awful that after the city is largely ruined by a natural disaster and no social caste as a whole was spared, there was still a "need" to segregate the Chinese. Seeing the old photos & reading about the quick rebuilding is just so much to process than my mind can fathom. It's long ago, but not so vastly different from our times today. Their survival instincts may fare them better, but our modern technology might've benefitted them too. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick it just blows my mind I‘m still actively thinking about all I learned through reading this book. Not much has changed! So astounding. 10mo
mollyrotondo @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick agree that not much has changed when you compare this past event to several modern natural disasters like Katrina and Maria. The discrimination continues and our modern day response time actually worsened compared to the response time after the earthquake. Very disheartening how we never improve our humanity. 10mo

Grief : no windows and no doors no escape…

Mercy is hit by the grief but needs to survive by getting food etc- think this will help with her healing? That she couldn‘t just sit with it?

Also that quote🎯

IndoorDame Incredible quote! I think having something to throw herself into will definitely help in the short term. I don‘t think it‘s good to completely shut down. But if she doesn‘t stop and process before too long it could affect her in the future. 10mo
kspenmoll I love that quote- we carry our loved ones in our hearts so they keep on- throwing herself into helping others was necessary in order to survive - she used her unique talents to ensure survival & to inspire others as well. Agree with @IndoorDame in that at some point her grief will overwhelm her. 10mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame It‘s a catch22 I think but yes she will need to process. 10mo
See All 13 Comments
vlwelser Being busy with surviving might delay her grief. I'm also secretly hoping that her family will turn up. 10mo
mcctrish I think the positive is that everyone is grieving someone or something and there is power in collective grief and eventually healing. 10mo
Sargar114 I agree, for the short term it‘s okay as it will keep her moving forward, but she will eventually need to deal with it. @vlwelser I don‘t know if I‘d like that. Her dad and Tom yes, but it seems important for a YA novel to address loss and grief and how to deal with these kinds of situations. (edited) 10mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 as a child whose sibling died I never read it in a book, until I was an adult. How powerful it is here in this book, so I hope her Ba is alive but I do hope it isn‘t a sunshine and roses ending … 10mo
DebinHawaii Everyone processes grief so differently & at different times. Mercy is such a take action person to begin with that jumping in to organize & help others is natural way for her to get through the early days of it. 10mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii she processes how I do ♥️. 10mo
AmyG She seems to be in survival mode and perhaps a bit of shock? I still think someone is alive aomewhere. If not her family then Tom..he came back or didn‘t leave yet. (edited) 10mo
Larkken @DebinHawaii @TheBookHippie I agree - I‘ve always turned my grief into a more private thing, I don‘t like it on display and will wait until I‘m by myself to show it if I can. Don‘t know if that means I‘d have been as productive as Mercy vs hiding in the tent like harry… but oh well. 10mo
mollyrotondo I think Mercy is slowly processing the loss through helping others. She still thinks about Jack and grieves the little losses when they pop up. Sometimes people need to keep moving or else the grief becomes overwhelming. 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Mercy has had to survive with far fewer comforts than the other St Clair's people, making her perfectly suited to rise to this occasion. Once the dust settles, I think she'll grieve. I also hope Ba and Tom show up. I agree that, as sad as it is, Ma and Jack can't be found alive. 10mo

Cocotte for Father Godwin 👀 or Madame Du Lac…

Mercy family dead…😭

Cocotte-prostitute. : a shallow individual baking dish usually with one or two handles. 🤷🏻‍♀️😅😳

IndoorDame I‘m racking my brain trying to come up with some connection to a baking dish and…? It‘s driving me crazy! 10mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame 🤷🏻‍♀️ 10mo
Karisa @mcctrish I was wondering if they were the “ghosts” in the attic too. Maybe moved to the priest‘s room when Mercy was punished to sleep there… Might‘ve been the Headmistress‘ way to dissuade the romantic meetup which might‘ve also led to their deaths 😳 10mo
Karisa How‘s Mercy going to break that news to Elodie 😢 10mo
AmyG @IndoorDame Cocotte is like a dutch oven….or a casserole dish? It IS a baking thing. (edited) 10mo
Karisa Wondering if Mercy‘s family really is gone. I‘m not willing to think her ma and Jack are dead yet… 10mo
mcctrish @Karisa yes, they met in the attic and the headmistress thoughts she‘d kill two birds with one stone 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 10mo
IndoorDame @AmyG huh, okay, I could make connections, but it‘s a stretch… 10mo
vlwelser Omg the priest. I felt bad for Elodie (again) here. There's a reason she's such a terror and it looks like it might be the self centered parents. 10mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser 😵‍💫😬 10mo
DebinHawaii Yeah the baking dish thing 🤷🏻‍♀️ I didn‘t think about them possibly being in the attic too. Interesting! @mcctrish @Karisa 10mo
mollyrotondo @mcctrish oh that‘s right. Good catch! They must have been fooling around in the attic for a long while. It‘s gross but I feel bad for them. They didn‘t deserve death. 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Brutal ending for Father Goodwin, Madam Du Lac, and Ruby. I did NOT make the connection of them being the ghosts in the attic. ? You kind of understand why Elodie feels the need to lash out. I know she suspects something wrong since she hasn't been picked up yet, but will she learn the truth? A cocotte is like a Dutch oven, so cocotte=a hot "box"? ? I'll see myself out. 10mo

TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii it‘s so so awful!!!!! 10mo
Sargar114 That was such a well written scene. So hard to stop reading this week after that! 10mo
mollyrotondo We see so many people we know dead immediately after the earthquake 😢 this was of course a really well written scene. Happens suddenly like real life and then the rallying immediately begins. 10mo

Francesca …
A friend indeed

I think she‘s my favorite

What did you think about Mercy being outed?!

AmyG I figured it was a matter of time before Mercy was outed. I, too, like Francesca. I have a feeling Mercy, by the end of the book, willhave made many friends. Even Elodie…maybe. 10mo
mcctrish I really do not understand denying education to people - how uneducated are you if you think keeping people in ignorance helps society ?! Francesca is lovely 10mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish fear of being less than and it‘s easy to control uneducated folks…. Plus then they don‘t elevate at all from poverty… 🤬 10mo
See All 17 Comments
mcctrish 🤬🤬🤬 10mo
IndoorDame @mcctrish I think the goal of something like that isn‘t to help society at all, it‘s purely to help the person driving the legislation and keep the powerful in power 🤬 10mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame every time … 10mo
Karisa Francesca is awesome! The image in the post reminded me of the tagged graphic novel memoir which is so good and powerful and sad 10mo
Karisa @mcctrish @TheBookHippie @IndoorDame Pure meanness and look at the parallels at the border to this very day. So many children. So many adults wanting safety, education for their children, jobs (even while business owners in the US scramble to find workers)… argh! 10mo
vlwelser Francesca is lovely. These girls are pretty brutal as a whole. 10mo
Larkken @IndoorDame @mcctrish @TheBookHippie yes! I was so annoyed when Elodie implied Mercy was trying to change class (be above her station etc) by attending the school when all she wanted was a fair and equal education. But class distinctions are exactly what these sorts of regulations maintain. And then there‘s the “quality “ of the education being offered to girls… just burn it down. Ugh. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa oh yes my readers love that book! Thanks for posting that here! 10mo
TheBookHippie @Larkken ✊🏼 10mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa being in a title one migrant immigrants mostly public school I feel this so deeply… 10mo
mcctrish @Larkken yes, how disappointing was it for Mercy to learn she was taking needlepoint 🤯 she‘s not trying to marry up, she‘s trying leverage her way out of poverty with an education/job 10mo
DebinHawaii Francesca is probably my favorite too, next to Mercy. It makes me angry when anyone is denied their right to a good education even if it sounded like Mercy was getting more knowledge from her book than the school programs. 10mo
mollyrotondo @DebinHawaii I agree. This school is more of a resume builder in name only since it‘s not providing real world working skills. It‘s stifling girls just as much as not allowing girls to go to school does. The school is just there to perpetuate a classist system. 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I like Francesca & Katie stands out, too. I appreciate that they found out her truth before the quake hit town. This way, if she needs to reach out to her Chinatown contacts or knows a different route, they'll have better reason to believe her. If these young ladies of important families are stuck studying embroidery & comportment, there's no hope for the rest of the women out there in 1906. Damn... 10mo

For every rule, there is a rule breaker. I think it‘s quite rude to call me out like that.
So are you a rule follower or are you a rule breaker?

I would like to say I do not miss middle school-high school and girls politics and meanness … 😵‍💫
That‘s all

Silence is wisdoms best reply…
The washing
The fight
Oy……thoughts?!

IndoorDame I don‘t think I know anyone who misses girl politics. It‘s kind of incredible how we all look back resenting the meanness, but generation after generation fail to teach our daughters to subvert it somehow. 10mo
mcctrish I was laughing to myself at the laundry scene . I‘m a rule follower, I don‘t like chaos. But I guess it depends on the rule - seat belts, car seats are good rules and rules made up 2000+ years ago maybe not so much 10mo
AmyG Ha, the minute I am told to do something…I want to fo the opposite. I loathed middle and high school. I was bullied in middle school and just had life going on. Girls can be brutal. 10mo
See All 16 Comments
Karisa I liked Mercy making the “ruler breaker” quip. You could tell that wasn‘t going to break this strong character‘s will. I‘m mostly a rule follower. However, if something goes too far like into meanness my mind clicks into a stubborn “Nope” mode. I getting better at listening to that part of myself as I get older. Age and stability make it easier to follow one‘s gut though… 10mo
Karisa @mcctrish That was another great scene. Good to have some levity and bonding before the quake. I wanted to see Elodie and her buddies try to emerge the shrunken wool though 😅 10mo
mcctrish @Karisa I so want to see them all screaming about shrunken dresses 10mo
vlwelser Mercy is such a great character. This is a fun scene. Even if it's ultimately unnecessary. 10mo
Karisa @vlwelser I think the main purpose of the scene was Mercy connecting with the others. She might need those connections to get through the days to come especially, if she can‘t reach her family in the wake of the disaster. 10mo
vlwelser @Karisa great point. It also shows problem solving and organization skills. I was thinking more about the tea that won't happen and the shrunken dresses that turn out not to matter. 10mo
Karisa @vlwelser Yeah, I see what you mean all those things fall away pretty quickly after something so big. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa I think maybe it helped bond the girls so that this tragedy they knew each other a bit.. @vlwelser (edited) 10mo
DebinHawaii @Karisa @TheBookHippie @vlwelser I agree with this, it formed a bond & made Mercy stand out as a leader & that will likely help her in the coming days. 10mo
mollyrotondo @Karisa definitely wish we could have seen the girls figure out what do about their shrunken dresses lol 10mo
mollyrotondo But I don‘t miss the catty girl meanness of school. Girls are so hateful to on another. 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I don't miss the mean-girl crap, but I can be clique-y to the point where people feel excluded & my face announces my feelings. I am not exactly a mean-girl, but I'm also of the "if you don't have anything nice to say, come say it to me instead of hurting their feelings" way of life. I follow the general rules of being a good person, but hoo-boy! Don't tell me what to do. I'm not doing it your way if I found a better way. I'll also throw hands. 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick As to the book, I loved that Mercy got to bond with the girls and that they also found out her true backstory. Sadly, Elodie and friends won't get to wear their too small uniforms. 10mo

TheBookHippie @IndoorDame right??? I went down a serious rabbit hole…. 10mo
mcctrish I was born in ‘64 so just bad news here ( I knew about that traffic thing and license plates dictating what days you could drive, going to work just becomes a whole other level of nightmare) 10mo
See All 12 Comments
AmyG Oddly….fascinating. 10mo
vlwelser Superstitions are fascinating. You took this to a new level. With the rabbit hole. 10mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser @AmyG I‘m so intrigued!!! 10mo
Larkken I love alll the numerology nuggets in this book! 10mo
DebinHawaii I used to travel for work to Japan & I used to shop a lot for blue & white dishware & the sets were all in fives because of the four superstition. So I think oddly somewhat because of that, I stay away from fours & tend to buy in other amounts when possible. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 10mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii 😂 I love it! 10mo
mollyrotondo Wow. Superstition to the next level. We have the number 13 but even that is a pretty loose superstition. But China sticks to this in every facet of life. Super interesting 10mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I will never look at number 4 again the same. 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I laugh when tall buildings just number floors 1, 2, 3, 5, etc. Call it what you want, it's still the 4th/13th floor! 10mo

“Isn‘t it unchristian to tell fortunes ?”
Parochial school says you burn for it….
The ruler …
I‘m old so you could be hit when at school especially parochial school … I still remember two kids the male teacher picked on. It broke my heart.
So yikes -thoughts?!?!

IndoorDame It‘s always heartbreaking to see teachers pick on specific kids, even when it‘s not physical. Sadly happens all too often. But also, how hard do you have to hit someone to break a ruler?!?!?! 10mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame oh I saw it happen…. 10mo
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie that‘s SO upsetting! I‘m sorry you had to see that. 10mo
See All 17 Comments
mcctrish The strap hung in the office when I went to school but I never saw anyone hit with it. Old time rulers were pretty solid so that‘s some serious rage 😭 10mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish 😭😭😭😭😭 10mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame so much trauma … that poor kid. 10mo
AmyG First….I like your photo choice. Ha! Second….I didn‘t like that part. Rage, indeed! 10mo
Karisa I still remember the principal‘s office having a strap too. I think they had to call home for permission to use it 😢 Never saw it used though. Horrible 10mo
vlwelser It was like something straight out of Jane Eyre. But I'm glad she stuck her neck out for the other girl. 10mo
Larkken I would have been worried about that cane! The headmistress is no joke. I understand that instilling discipline can‘t be just from a position of sweetness and light but I‘m glad corporeal punishment is not longer a thing. It never seems to go to the correct person. Making them wash their own clothes was a much better punishment! (edited) 10mo
DebinHawaii @Larkken So true! A much better punishment. 10mo
Sargar114 Ugh such a terrible part. I loved that Mercy stepped up and that Kate (?) wasn‘t willing to sell her out even with the threat of punishment. Definitely strength of character shown by both. 10mo
mollyrotondo I didn‘t think anyone would be beaten at this school. I thought everyone was just snobby and catty but not brutal. When Mercy got brutally hit I was devastated. I‘m glad she didn‘t let the other girl be the fall guy but still. Horrible. 10mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo To me it is private school in a nutshell. 10mo
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie I‘m grateful when I was in catholic school it wasn‘t allowed even though one nun teacher did grab kids and eventually got fired for yanking a kids arm. 10mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I am so glad it isn‘t allowed most schools but still way too many. 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick This scene had me fuming last night! There is no need for that, especially for non-violent infractions. My ass would've been thrown out quick if they tried to pull that shit on anyone in my public school. I grew up with the boys and be sure that teacher, male or female, would've had a foot to the chin so fast. If we heard about it after the fact, there would be an uprising. My class was kind, but also bold & protective of each other. 10mo

Tom…
We can measure our lives by our pain .
Think he stayed in Chinatown ?

IndoorDame Oh I hope not! I was assuming he‘d left already, but I guess that doesn‘t advance the plot of the novel as well… 10mo
mcctrish Just assumed he left but maybe he comes back later to see what‘s left of Chinatown/SF 10mo
AmyG @mcctrish I was going to say the same thing. 10mo

Karisa @IndoorDame Good point! Might have kept him safe for now though 10mo

TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 10mo
Sargar114 I think he left but will come back once he gets word of the earthquake. 10mo
mollyrotondo @Sargar114 agree. I think he‘ll come back once he hears about the earthquake 10mo

Elodie can‘t have chocolate!!
How do you like her now?
Her dad was where on her birthday?!👀
And so Elodie is second in command.
How did you like the girls meeting?!
Then she‘s just mean..

SF https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHkc83XA2dY

📸1906 Wallis Simpson as a school girl 😂👀🤣

IndoorDame And I find driving stressful today! 10mo
IndoorDame While I don‘t trust people who don‘t eat chocolate, I thought it took a lot of guts for Elodie to make that deal without consulting her father. She‘s not sweet or anything, but I‘m more impressed with her strength of character now 10mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame I am not a fan of driving 😵‍💫 10mo
See All 14 Comments
mcctrish Elodie would have to be strong with parents like hers 10mo
AmyG Elodie is a product of her upbringing. I like that she is a strong young woman. 10mo
Karisa I thought it was sad and telling that her father didn‘t show on her birthday and had sent her a gift she was allergic too. It helps explain Elodie as a character. 10mo
vlwelser This made me actually like Elodie for a hot second. Then she went back to her normal ghastly self. 10mo
Larkken Agree with everyone 💯 seems like almost all the girls in the school has a sob story and she‘s the only one that takes it out on others 10mo
TheBookHippie @Larkken choices. You always can choose to be kind! (edited) 10mo
DebinHawaii I agree @IndoorDame I feel like she has some hidden depths & isn‘t a typical one-dimensional mean girl. And 💯on non 🍫 eaters! 😉😆 10mo
Sargar114 Definitely a more interesting character. She reminded me a bit of the daughter in the first book we read by her. Agreed, cannot trust people who can‘t eat chocolate 😂. I‘d feel bad for the way she was treated by her parents, except she seems to be perpetuating the cycle by treating Mercy terribly 10mo
mollyrotondo This scene was really interesting. I almost forgot what year it was in the book lol Elodie really conducted herself so professionally. If she was such a bully Elodie and Mercy would make a good team. I had a glimmer of sympathy for her when her father didn‘t show up and gave her a birthday present she‘s allergic too 🙄 but she‘s so awful in the next few scenes that my sympathy goes right out the window. 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick This was interesting. As much as Elixirs wants everyone to think she has such a great life, she's hurting, too. I still want Elixir to get her ass handed to her, but she showed some surprising business prowess and bravery in making the deal about the workers. 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick OK my phone doesn't seem to think Elodie is an actual word. LOL. I watched about a minute of this video and will watch the rest later. It's wild how similar yet different it all looks. And those roads are just melee without turn signals. I'm not a nervous driver, but those conditions might make me apprehensive. 10mo

On we read! Happy Sunday! 🥡🥢🥠🥮

I thank ya for Sundays! The best way to end the week or begin whichever way you look at it!

AmyG Ha, recipies! I won‘t even touch those as my daughter-in-law is Chinese. I couldn‘t come close to her Mom‘s cooking if I practiced for the rest of my life. 🤣 10mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG one of my best friends is from Taiwan I can‘t replicate her cooking either! 10mo

mcctrish I think I might make that fried rice recipe tonight. How lucky are you @AmyG and @TheBookHippie to get homemade Asian food ❤️❤️❤️❤️ 10mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I‘ve managed lo mein and the rice- but the rest… nothing like someone who is fluent in the cooking of it! 10mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG yes my latkes 👩🏻‍🍳🏆 people complain to me it doesn‘t taste like mine 🤷🏻‍♀️ 10mo
kspenmoll I am thoroughly enjoying this book- a nice switch after the intensity of Adrienne Rich. Maybe I will try the rice. (edited) 10mo
AmyG @mcctrish We are SO lucky when Lucy cooks for us. I make myself sick….I eat so much. (edited) 10mo
Larkken Yum. We made frozen Chinese last night - cheaters, I know 😄😂 and def not as good as homemade! Jealous… 10mo
Karisa Ok, these comments are making me hungry! Going to be ordering from the nearby Chinese restaurant now for dinner. My family will happy with that! 😅 10mo
DebinHawaii Yep, now I‘m hungry for Chinese food! 😋 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick My guy is on an Asian food kick lately and is currently in the kitchen, making marinated pork belly fried rice for a late dinner. I 10mo

What do you think of Tom?

Chocolate coins!!

Well what do you think so far?!

AmyG I like Tom. Do they wind up together..him and Mercy? She seems to like him. It was hard for me to stop reading. I do not like YA books but I love Lee‘s stories. Thoroughly enjoying this one. And I love reading about the Chinese people….as my grandson is half Chinese. ❤️ (edited) 10mo
mcctrish I didn‘t realize this was YA I just thought it was about a 15yr old. Tom is protecting his heart, he knows Mercy is going to change their world and he doesn‘t want to assume she wants him to be part of it 10mo
kspenmoll I am hoping Tom will stay true to her, but she will be changed by her experiences outside Chinatown. He must wonder if she will stay true to him. From their history growing up it seems as if he supports her impulsiveness to a degree. (edited) 10mo
See All 12 Comments
vlwelser Tom is a big TBD for me. He seems to have a brain in his head. So potential. 10mo
Sargar114 I like Tom. I think he likes Mercy but because she is not “conventional wife” material he‘s probably conflicted with societal and familial pressures. 10mo
Larkken Loving that Tom has dreams of his own with the flying etc, he‘s very easy to root for even tho we‘ve seen very little of him! 10mo
Karisa Yeah, Tom seems to be keeping Mercy at a distance. He seems like a solid guy though. They are both just so young, but people did marry younger in those days. So maybe historical fiction and YA work well. 😬 10mo
IndoorDame I think it‘s clear Tom cares about her, but I‘m not sure he‘s as willing to buck convention and follow his dreams as she is… I‘m rooting for them 10mo
DebinHawaii I‘m hoping we see more of Tom—he does seem solid & I like how he seems to care about her little brother too. I have really enjoyed her previous books & I am liking this one so far too. (edited) 10mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii me too! Another fascinating piece of history to learn. 10mo
mollyrotondo I like Tom but i have a feeling he's going to annoy further down the line. But i am absolutely loving this book so far. So much history seamlessly wound into a good story so far. 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick He seems like a nice, responsible guy but I'm not sure he's the guy for Mercy. I also wonder if he is looking for someone a little more conventional, or is perhaps getting some flack that she's unsuitable. 10mo

What do you think of the school?
Francesca- I like her
Books over people and Shakespeare ..
What do you think of the students ?

Aspic it haunts us 😂😵‍💫😅🤷🏻‍♀️

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girls_High_School_(San_Francisco)

https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/aspics-jello-salad

https://www.seriouseats.com/history-of-jell-o-salad

AmyG Ah, Francesca. What is going on with her and that….was it a teacher? How he pulled her away for a lesson? Suspicious. I also wonder about who Mercy will befriend and what becomes of her and her nasty roommate. 10mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG The priest right? Not suspicious at all … 😵‍💫 10mo
AmyG Ah, he was a priest. Now I will just assume he is guilty of….something. 😬 10mo
See All 22 Comments
kspenmoll Francesca is wonderful. Worried that her music teacher? is sexually abusing her. Mercy has huge challenges with everyone there, including that nasty head mistress. 10mo
mcctrish Bad feelings about the priest!!!! Books are better than people especially if they are like Elodie and her crew 10mo
kspenmoll Thanks all- will reread- priest, not music teacher. 10mo
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll I think I‘m right 😵‍💫🙃😂 10mo
vlwelser Francesca is going to be a great character. And that aspic scene 😂. I hope the more normal non Elodie crowd turns out to be friendly to our fearless protagonist. 10mo
vlwelser Also those courses are ridiculous. But at least she's getting some French. 🇫🇷 10mo
Sargar114 Definitely had abuse vibes from the priest. The cliques felt very much typical high school/mean girl. Will absolutely work for YA. 10mo
Larkken Here‘s hoping Mercy Katie and Francesca can overthrow Elodie & co… 10mo
TheBookHippie @Larkken 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 10mo
Larkken @kspenmoll @AmyG yeaaaa that was a dark turn (edited) 10mo
Karisa I was so glad that not if the girls at the school were like Elodie. @AmyG I‘m so hoping that the priest is not a creepo. Francesca seemed to be there early at church by choice. Maybe her older brother?? I like Francesca so much too. 10mo
IndoorDame @kspenmoll I got the same vibe from the priest 😬 10mo
DebinHawaii Can‘t get away from that aspic! 🤢😆Definitely weird/bad vibes from the priest. (edited) 10mo
mollyrotondo Right now I'm super disappointed in the school. The goal is teaching them to get good husbands which is so annoying! I really hope Mercy eventually gets what she is looking for at this school. I also immediately thought something was up with Priest. I hope not though. I'm also looking forward to getting to know these other girls a little bit more. 10mo
mollyrotondo Oh and aspics still gross me out 10mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo aspics 🤮 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I had forgotten what aspic was, so I had the joy of being disgusted once again! 🤢 I like Francesca so far & really hope the encounter is more of a red herring than a red flag. It's disappointing that the school is teaching shit like embroidery & comportment. Shouldn't they know this already if they're in well-to-do families? Reminds me of a less horrifying version of this book I read a few months ago. 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Trust that I may have dreams of a pleasant Sunday Buddy Read pot luck gathering, but we all think we're funny & bring aspic. 🤣 10mo

Lots of little words of wisdom in here - your favourite? Mine is I can row my own boat without wind. ✊🏼😅🤣

AmyG I like the outrun the moon saying. The boat one is good, too. 10mo
kspenmoll So many little gems! 10mo
vlwelser The boat one might be my fav. It's like duh you don't need wind to row. 10mo
See All 12 Comments
Sargar114 I liked the titular quote, but the boat one is also very good. 10mo
Larkken So many good ones! 10mo
Karisa I liked those above too and also “your circumstances don‘t determine where you go, only your starting point”. It was from Mercy‘s book she loved so much. I keep meaning to look it up to see if it was a real book. Feels so modern 10mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa I tried to find the book no luck yet! 10mo
DebinHawaii @Karisa I love that one too! I also liked “With Eastern religion, no one cares if you pick and choose the ingredients for your particular moral soup, as long as you have some soup, preferably one with lots of ginger…” 10mo
Karisa @DebinHawaii 👏👏👏 I have that one highlighted too! 10mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii 🏆👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼♥️ yes! That one too! 10mo
mollyrotondo The moral soup quote is also one of my favorites so far! 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick The quote about Eastern religion stood out to me because I just read something similar in a book about Thailand. Lots of good gems here. I wish my oldest niece was a reader. I think she'd gain a little wisdom before heading off to college. 10mo
