Soul Mountain
Soul Mountain | Gao Xingjian
In 1983, Chinese playwright, critic, fiction writer, and painter Gao Xingjian was diagnosed with lung cancer and faced imminent death. But six weeks later, a second examination revealed there was no cancerhe had won "a second reprieve from death." Faced with a repressive cultural environment and the threat of a spell in a prison farm, Gao fled Beijing and began a journey of 15,000 kilometers into the remote mountains and ancient forests of Sichuan in southwest China. The result of this epic voyage of discovery is Soul Mountain. Bold, lyrical, and prodigious, Soul Moutain probes the human soul with an uncommon directness and candor and delights in the freedom of the imagination to expand the notion of the individual self.

FINALLY, I've finished this book. It has been a long two months. Tbh, I have no idea what I have just read. This Nobel prize winning piece is incomprehensible to me. There is no purpose, no theme, no journey, no story.... perhaps I am limited in my understanding of this "masterpiece" by my lack of literature experience. Or maybe the English translation simply fails to do the original work justice. Either way, what are your thoughts on this one?

“You should know that there is little you can seek in this world, that there is no need for you to be so greedy, in the end all you can achieve are memories, hazy, intangible, dreamlike memories, which are impossible to articulate. When you try to relate them, the are only sentences, the dregs left from the filler of linguistic structures.”

I'm tarrying for quite a while in Asia on my #ReadingAroundTheWorld tour. So many amazing works to explore! Today I found this lovely gem from Gao Xingjian at a local indie bookstore called Grey Matter Books-- "used books for scholars and holy fools"! #China #NobelPrizeWinners

cajunsyd I read that book a few years ago and struggled with it quite a bit. The lack of proper names and other aspects made it difficult to follow at times. I should try it again though, it is meant to be a beautiful book. Can‘t wait to hear what you think. 6y
Melkyl @Louise @cajunsyd I found this to be a really tough book to read. I got through it, but it took a long time. I‘m also not sure I got a lot out of it. 6y
cajunsyd @Melwilk glad that I am not alone! I see that lots of Littens bailed! 6y

Louise @cajunsyd @Melwilk It's so interesting to hear your perspectives. Flipping through it, I see that he experiments with the personal pronouns in his exploration of self and world. It's going to be an unusual read! Will post when I've finished it! 6y

Melkyl I look forward to hearing your thoughts. @Louise (edited) 6y

It may have taken me four months, but I finally finished this book. I can say I technically read every word, but I would be hard-pressed to tell you what the book is about. There are 81 chapters, and none of them seemed really related. This is not a traditional novel. I am not really sure what it is, but I am so glad I do not have to take a test over it! On a positive note, with this book I finished the #LitsyAtoZ challenge!!

merelybookish Congrats! I had this for X but decided not even to try. 6y
erzascarletbookgasm Congrats! For completing your challenge! 6y
Melkyl @merelybookish I really did not enjoy reading it at all! I stuck with it because I had it, and it also counted toward my #MountTBR challenge. 6y

#uncannyoctober day 20: #booksinthewild
Probably as #wild as it's gonna get here. But we did have a bit of a wild night with rain splattering against the windows, an always rare sight in bone dry California. It did however mean that my 4yo's pumpkin patch field trip had to be rescheduled 😢

BellaBookNook You know it always rains the day I want to take my boys apple picking. What‘s up with that?😀 7y

Bailedbailed

No way. There are a few interesting anecdotes, but this is not a novel: it is utterly devoid of shape or meaning; there's not a blinking thing I can get behind or grab hold of to push myself past the 23% mark, which has taken me three months to get to. No way. I am out of here. Yay!

Melkyl I feel the same way! However, this I my “X” book for #litsyatoz. I have to finish. I have been reading for two months and am at 69%. I am reading the words, but I don‘t really absorb anything. 7y

Lindy Unlike the protagonist who is stuck, you have the mighty power to say, "I'm outta here!" 7y

I am struggling some with this book, but I will keep plugging along. This is my last book - X - for my #LitsyAtoZ challenge. I have to finish (before the end of the year 😂)!! The writing is simple and beautiful, but the book is definitely not one to be read lightly. It takes some work.

ValerieAndBooks I have a different one by him -- also picked him out for my X of this challenge. Hope it's good 🤔!! 7y
Melkyl @ValerieAndBooks I hope it's good too 😊 7y

merelybookish How is this book? I have it on my shelf, bought it for #LitsyAtoZ, but haven't felt excited to read it. 7y

shawnmooney @merelybookish I am enjoying it a lot but it's slow-moving, meditative, and baggy: not for everyone! Please also see the blurb I put up a few hours ago about it. 7y

This is a quintessentially meditative passage, and it's juxtaposed at the beginning of one chapter up against a harrowing tale at the end of the last one about a man's horrific experiences during the Cultural Revolution. Wow… I'm finally getting a sense of what Xingjian is up to here. ❤️

I am pretty allergic to spiritually-themed stuff but have to get through a novel about a non-white protagonist's spiritual journey for one of the book challenges. So this will be my second try, after bailing on Wagamese's Medicine Walk last month. Fingers crossed!

Yeah_I_Read Is this for the book riot read harder challenge? I am doing the same challenge 😊 7y
Melkyl This is on my list for some of my challenges too. 7y
shawnmooney @Yeah_I_Read Yes, that one! @Melwilk I have now read the first ten pages or so and it has already drawn me in. It's really easy to read. (edited) 7y

Some of my books set in Asia! I haven't read most of these yet, but I've heard so many wonderful things about each of them.

Countries represented: India 🇮🇳, China 🇨🇳, Indonesia 🇮🇩, Japan 🇯🇵, Myanmar 🇲🇲, and an unnamed country in the Middle East (but the author's from Kuwait 🇰🇼).

shawnmooney I'm pretty sure that Wind-up Bird Chronicle is the best novel I've ever read. 💙💙 8y
Notafraidofwords I read Guapa this year and it's in my top 5 books that I absolutely love. It's so hard to do what the author did. He mixes the political and the personal so so well. 8y

Shortstack I realized this morning that the vast majority of my books set in Asia are at work or lent out because I'm always trying to push them on people in my lending library. 😂😂😂😂 They are so often so rich and beautiful!! I want to read more books set in India though. I typically read ones set in China/Japan/Vietnam. 8y
Notafraidofwords @theshrinkette yes, push it up your TBR for sure. 8y
erzascarletbookgasm Very good stack, there! 8y
Marni I had the sad realization today that I haven't read any books set in Asia! :( 8y
BookishFeminist @shawnmooney That's awesome to hear! I haven't read that one yet and it's been pretty high priority for a while. You're going to make me read it sooner! 8y
shawnmooney @BookishFeminist I read it several years before I'd visited Japan, much less lived here. I think it's time for a re-read alongside a whole bunch of walking tours to visit all the various Tokyo settings! 8y

I was browsing through a used book sale in the park which consisted mostly of old text books from the seventies, when I lucked upon this first American edition of Gao Xingjian's critically acclaimed epic Soul Mountain. I've been searching for this one for a long time and I think it found me at just the right time in my life.
