Black Like Me | John Edward Griffin

There was nothing of the feel of America here. It was rather some strange country suspended in ugliness.

I cannot believe what is happening in this country. I have been planning to read this for a while. I can not believe this is still so relevant. How the hell are we still dealing with race and nazis all these years later? I just don't understand. #weallbleedred

Broke my #bookbuyingban , but I'm justifying because I needed a new copy of Black Like Me. Someone censored the copy I'd purchased before. 😢

Riveted_Reader_Melissa What!?! That's horrible! (The censorship, not the book buying) 7y
Rachel.Rencher @Riveted_Reader_Melissa The picture of it is a few posts back on my page. I've never seen anything like it! 7y
avalinah Oh my god they did WHAT 😱 7y

hgrimes That is crazy. I look forward to hearing about what on earth they found so offensive they had to take the effort to censor it! ugh. 7y
moranadatter They did what?! 7y
Rachel.Rencher @avalinah @moranadatter Yeah, I bought it from a thrift store, and when I opened it a few weeks later I realized someone had glued black construction paper on over half the pages. 😳 7y
Lucas.Rencher So glad we have a readable copy now! 7y
melbeautyandbooks Why would someone do that? 7y

So, I'm shocked. I bought this book from a thrift store a couple weeks ago without looking inside. I went to read it today, and somebody censored half the book. They literally taped and glued black paper over entire sections... I'm appalled that someone would do this.

Librarybelle So sad! 7y
Lucas.Rencher That's awful I'm sorry 7y
Texreader Omg!!!! 7y

Notafraidofwords Wait what?! 7y
Rachel.Rencher @Notafraidofwords Yeah, I tried to peel the paper off, but it ripped the pages. I couldn't even tell what was underneath. 7y
JoRead Dislike this so much! 😫😲😬 7y
BekahB WOW. That's really strange. 😦 7y
StephBengtson 😱 wtf? 7y
SaturnDoo ?? Are you going to keep this copy so that when you get an "uncensored" copy you can see/understand what drove the person to do this? I have seen books that someone used a sharpie in to black out things but nothing like this. 7y
Eyelit Wow. That's awful! 7y
EchoLogical 😕 7y
tournevis I saw it done once! A man was reading a book of jokes and censoring as he read with a big stinky black marker. Insane! 7y
Rachel.Rencher @SaturnDoo Basically the whole book was censored... I think it was more of a racist statement than really trying to censor any bad words. 😕 Just breaks my heart to know there are still people like that in the world. 7y
mkritchey I have never seen this... kinda disappointed a thrift store would sell it tbh. Time to buy another one I guess. 😳 7y
saresmoore Weird and kinda creepy. 7y
Rachel.Rencher @mkritchey I was, too! To be fair I didn't notice when I bought it. Going to buy my next copy through a bookstore so I know there's nothing wrong with it.😕 7y
Cspen113 That's awful!! And strange. 7y
mkritchey @Rachel.Rencher okay, maybe I'm a little extra... but I'd also show the book to the thrift store. If it wasn't expensive I wouldn't care about the cost loss but maybe they need to be shown that this is a problem and to keep a look out for books that come in that are censored. I've never seen this but I overheard a woman argue with an HPB employee because they wouldn't buy her book because profanity was sharpied over so her kid could read it. (edited) 7y
Lcsmcat 😲 7y
HotMessJess For some reason this seems so strange! I have so many questions. 7y
littleblogofbooks That is so weird, I've never seen that before! 7y
Cinfhen 😫😱😳 7y
DrexEdit Wow! 😨 7y
Gayan This sort of breaks my heart for more than one reason. 💔 7y
BarbaraJean Holy crap, that's crazy! I've seen words censored out before, but never whole pages pasted over. To be so threatened by the content to go to such an extreme, rather than just setting the book aside? Ugh. They could have at least engaged the content by writing argumentative comments in the margin... I'd find that more interesting and productive even if I didn't agree! 7y
Nebklvr Weird. Why bother? People are crazy 7y
asiriusreader This is heartbreaking. And disturbing. 😞 7y
Miss_Kim Now that's a collector's item! 😆 7y
minkyb Very creepy! 7y
andrew61 Very odd! 7y
OrangeMooseReads Weird and sad 7y
gimboid Finding out what's under the black might give some insight into the mind of the person who'd bother to do that, though you might not want to go there. 7y
Rachel.Rencher @gimboid I tried, but they'd glued it down so it just shredded the page 😣 I have another copy coming in the mail, though, so I'll try to compare. 7y
howlinglibraries That's so disappointing to me. I remember being a preteen and checking out a library book that someone had scrawled in with sharpie to cover all the "bad words". 7y
Rachel.Rencher @howlinglibraries I grew up in a place that encourages censorship. When I was in 7th grade, my English teacher gave us each a sharpie when we were reading To Kill a Mockingbird and demanded that we censor the bad words. It's just as bad as burning books, in my opinion. Why censor when we can learn from the word choices? 7y
Tanner 😳 7y
Ubookquitous Wow - and that book is often banned, which again, don't like it, fine, but stop trying to prevent others from reading 7y
Brooke_H 😳 omg 7y
ScientistSam 😢 7y
LauraBrook What in the hell?!?!???? Shame on that person. 7y
nelehelen Wth????? 7y
bookishbitch Wow! Maybe some parent? I once had a book taken away from me as a preteen because it was deemed inappropriate by a well meaning aunt. You can bet I made sure to read a different copy as soon as I could get my hands on it. Hopefully whoever that was originally intended for did the same once possible. 7y
thrilloffear If you get another copy, it'd be really interesting to see what the person was actually trying to censor... but yeah I agree that's awful :/ 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Holy Cow! That needs to be in a censorship museum. Seriously, why even read the book if it took you that much effort to censor so much of it. 7y
