Little Big Man
Little Big Man: A Novel | Thomas Berger

The truth is always made up of little particulars which sound ridiculous when repeated. So says Jack Crabb, the 111-year-old narrator of Thomas Bergers 1964 masterpiece of American fiction, Little Big Man. Berger claimed the Western as serious literature with this savage and epic account of one mans extraordinary double life. After surviving the massacre of his pioneer family, ten-year-old Jack is adopted by an Indian chief who nicknames him Little Big Man. As a Cheyenne, he feasts on dog, loves four wives, and sees his people butchered by horse soldiers commanded by General George Armstrong Custer. Later, living as a white man once more, he hunts the buffalo to near-extinction, tangles with Wyatt Earp, cheats Wild Bill Hickok, and fights in the Battle of Little Bighorn alongside Custer himselfa man hed sworn to kill. Hailed by The Nation as a seminal event, Little Big Man is a singular literary achievement that, like its hero, only gets better with age.Praise for Little Big Man An epic such as Mark Twain might have given us.Henry Miller The very best novel ever about the American West. The New York Times Book Review Spellbinding . . . [Crabb] surely must be one of the most delightfully absurd fictional fossils ever unearthed.Time Superb . . . Bergers success in capturing the points of view and emotional atmosphere of a vanished era is uncanny. His skill in characterization, his narrative power and his somewhat cynical humor are all outstanding. The New York TimesFrom the Trade Paperback edition.

Prompt: Dances With Wolves

EvieBee Good one! 2y
smalldogs_bigbooks2419 I watched Dances With Wolves for the first time recently. I didn‘t know until more recently that it was based on a book. It‘s on my TBR. 2y

Eggs Great choice ❤️🐎❤️ 3y
SamAnne Oh the movie had such an impact on me as a child in the 70s. Despite its totally cheesiness and use of white actors for native roles, it was (sadly) my first education on what European colonizers did to the original people. For years I‘ve wanted to bring this movie up to my Native friends and work colleagues but I fear they will roll their eyes. 😀🙄 But it was transformative. 3y
Blueberry @SamAnne I've never seen the movie but the book was humorous. 3y

The novel that was the inspiration for one of my favorite movies “Little Big Man” starring Dustin Hoffman. The book is so much better than the movie. And so different. Whoever wrote the screenplay wrote almost a completely different story. In the movie, the main character, Jack Crabb, was a comical character. Not in the novel. And the character experiences so much more. The novel is so different and better. I may never watch the movie again.

I really loved this book. It taught me how the indians in North America lived and the differences with the white men. It's not sugar coned, it tells you how it is. Raw and honest.

Whoa! I'm really glad I didn't bail on this! Though the production values of the audio were terrible, the narrators and the writing were great. I had my epiphany about this satire of The American Old West around 1/2 way through and was validated by McMurty's essay. #armchairaudies

BethFishReads Loved this book (& the movie). But I read it in print 8y

TBH, I really don't get this kind of faux-Twain kind of satire; and the overall sound is Scott Sowers' section seem a bit noisy for an Audie finalist; but I'll keep going at least 1/3 of the way in before I decide whether or not 2 DNF #ArmchairAudies

BethFishReads Bummer vi loved the book and movie 8y
LitHousewife Oh, no. But if it's not doing anything for you, it's clearly not our winner. Does the narrator wear a kilt by any chance? 😏 8y
