Wish Her Safe At Home
Wish Her Safe At Home | Stephen Benatar
9 posts | 7 read | 12 to read
Rachel Waring is deliriously happy. Out of nowhere, a great-aunt leaves her a Georgian mansion in another cityand she sheds her old life without delay. Gone is her dull administrative job, her mousy wardrobe, her downer of a roommate. She will live as a woman of leisure, devoted to beauty, creativity, expression, and love. Once installed in her new quarters, Rachel plants a garden, takes up writing, and impresses everyone she meets with her extraordinary optimism. But as Rachel sings and jokes the days away, her new neighbors begin to wonder if she might be taking her transformation just a bit too far. In Wish Her Safe at Home, Stephen Benatar finds humor and horror in the shifting region between elation and mania. His heroine could be the next-door neighbor of the Beales of Grey Gardens or a sister to Jane Gardams oddball protagonists, but she has an ebullient charm all her own.

4⭐️ Rachel Waring is a cross between Don Quixote and Judith Hearne. It started funny and then it gets disturbing that I couldn‘t help feeling pity for Rachel, wanted to root for her but knew that it was just going downhill for her. Definitely not a book for those who are in the mood for a lifting story, but if you are looking for brilliant writing, this one is for you.

BarbaraBB Sounds good again! Also I love the cover and your photo 🥰 12mo

2019 is definitely a year of #newbeginnings for us in our new home 🏡 One of my favorite parts of the house is our new built in bookshelves 😍 I have no idea how to organize my books but these two pretty collections are a start!

Introducing my faithful reading buddy, Thumb Thing 😁 It makes it easier to hold a book with one hand, while the other is holding a cup of coffee ☕️ Perfection!

PS: It works as a bookmark, too!

Available in M and L sizes https://philosophia.sg/products/thumb-thing

julesG This is such a neat device. 6y
BethM Love it! 6y
Prairiegirl_reading Does it break the spine? 6y

sisilia @julesG @BethM Right?! I just love it.. 6y
sisilia @Prairiegirl_reading It doesn‘t 😊 You can adjust how deep you want to press it onto the book. I‘m not a fan of broken spines, either, and have been using thumb thing for a while now 6y
Prairiegirl_reading @sisilia cool! Thanks! I‘ve seen these and thought what a great idea but I thought for sure it would break the spine and I can‘t have that! Lol! I‘ll have to pick one up then. 😄 6y
tournevis It really does make holding a book easier, IIF one does not have arthritis of similar chronic joint pain. If so, it hurts just as much, just differently. FYI. 6y
sisilia Ooohh good to know @tournevis 6y
tournevis @sisilia I'd be using it otherwise. 6y
readordierachel How clever! 6y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook So cool! I wish I could get one - US and Europe have all the cool gadgets and stuff 6y
BooknerdsLife @sisilia oh! Didn't know this could work as a bookmark as well!! 😱 Definitely need one for myself 😀💕 6y

Bailedbailed

I had to take it back to the library, and couldn't muster the motivation to finish in time.

The style is going to be a bit hard to get into, but a book with a great title about a woman who goes progressively further off her rocker because of a house? Yes.
