Stig of the Dump
Stig of the Dump | Clive King
A boy befriends a young caveman in this modern childrens classic of friendship and adventure. Barney isnt supposed to go near the chalk pit. His grandmother and sister both told him the edge could give way and he could fall inbut what else is he supposed to do on a miserable gray day? Its not long before Barney falls into the pit and bumps his head. But where he lands is more than an old garbage dump: Its a home. Theres a little hut built out of discarded junk, and more surprisingly, theres a boy, about Barneys age, inside. He speaks in grunts instead of English, wears a rabbit-skin loincloth, has shaggy black hair, and might be named something that sounds like Stig. Barney befriends him immediately. Together, Barney and Stig go on all sorts of adventures, building a chimney for Stigs hut, joining a foxhunt, stopping robbers, and catching a leopard escaped from the circus! Barney and Stigs escapades have been delighting children for more than fifty years, while addressing important topics such as bullying, recycling, and language barriers. This timeless classic is sure to captivate readers young and old with its wit, imagination, and sense of adventure.

My British step father read this to me over a series of nights almost 30 years ago, and it left a lasting impression. I recently decided to get a copy for my niece but read it before sending it on. Still enjoyable, a great children‘s adventure book.

Really sad to see Clive King, author of the children‘s classic Stig of the Dump died earlier this week. Another part of my childhood gone. An excellent book.

#marchintooz #historydoesntrepeat

My current bedtime read with the 7 year old. History doesn‘t repeat or does it? How else can you explain finding a caveman living in the local rubbish dump? Both my kids and I have loved this old classic - I‘m guessing it looks familiar to the UK Littens but very strange to the US ones!

rockpools SOOOO familiar! We must have read it in school several times over - I remember the bottom left and top copies. And possibly a tv series. 6y
Cinfhen Yup! #clueless 🙋‍♀️🤷‍♀️ 6y
Libby1 This book is so good. I grew up in the US so wasn‘t familiar with it, but now that I live in the UK I wanted to acquaint myself with British classics. Enjoy! 6y

KarenUK I loved this when I was little 👍💕 6y
quietlycuriouskate I loved that book! I had the one with the yellow cover. ❤ 6y
xicanti I feel like I read this when I was a small Canadian child, but all I remember is the title. 6y
Centique @xicanti the bit that stuck in my head was building a chimney for the shack out of tin cans and a window out of ham jars. Does that ring any bells? 6y
Centique @Cinfhen I always find that a bit funny. 😋In NZ (and prob Oz) we got most of the UK popular culture and a fair chunk of US stuff growing up - so a lot of both is familiar to us. Sesame Street AND Worzel Gummidge. 😂😂 6y
LeahBergen I remember the top right edition. I grew up with Puffin Books here in Canada. ❤️ 6y
Centique @LeahBergen looks like Canada got both the UK and US influences as well! 6y
Andrew65 A great book! I too remember the tv series @RachelO 6y

Libby1 I'm not British but I now live in the UK, so it wasn't part of my childhood, @Itchyfeetreader . I'm glad I found it now. My little boy will be 8 next year and I think that will be the perfect time to introduce him to Barney, Stig, and Lou. 7y

"Clive King has attempted to learn ten languages, including Tamil, Bengali, Gaelic and Anglo-Saxon. He has not been incredibly successful with any of them..."

?One of the best author bios ever.?

Izai.Amorim I wonder where Anglo Saxon is spoken 7y
