White Bodies: A Novel | Jane Robins
27 posts | 30 read | 34 to read
This chilling psychological suspense novelthink Strangers on a Train for the modern ageexplores the dark side of love and the unbreakable ties that bind two sisters together. Felix and Tilda seem like the perfect couple: young and in love, a financier and a beautiful up-and-coming starlet. But behind their flawless faade, not everything is as it seems. Callie, Tildas unassuming twin, has watched her sister visibly shrink under Felixs domineering love. She has looked on silently as Tilda stopped working, nearly stopped eating, and turned into a neat freak, with mugs wrapped in Saran Wrap and suspicious syringes hidden in the bathroom trash. She knows about Felixs uncontrollable rages, and has seen the bruises on the white skin of her sisters arms. Worried about the psychological hold that Felix seems to have over Tilda, Callie joins an Internet support group for victims of abuse and their friends. However, things spiral out of control and she starts to doubt her own judgment when one of her new acquaintances is killed by an abusive man. And then suddenly Felix diesor was he murdered? A page-turning work of suspense that announces a stunning new voice in fiction, White Bodies will change the way you think about obsession, love, and the violence we inflict on one anotherand ourselves.

Unsettling but not very thrilling. Middle of the road read for me.

Jane Robins‘s psychological thriller is a tedious, silly affair that poorly uses the serious subject of controlling male behaviour. The lacklustre plot is far too easy to guess and isn‘t helped by an alienating main character whose personality ‘quirks‘ include eating things that belong to her fundamentally unpleasant sister and who never acts in a believable or rational way (to the extent that at one point I thought she was special needs).

AlaMich Why do cats do that? Mine has a thing about lying/sitting on bags on the floor. She‘ll paw at a plastic bag on the floor til it‘s juusssttt right and then plant her butt on it like she‘s accomplished something! 😆 5y

TheLibrarian @AlaMich @wanderinglynn Cats are strange creatures! Princess is obsessed about laying on pretty much anything: the tv remote, paper towels, paper, phones, pens, pillows, etc. If I can‘t find the remote, there‘s a 95% chance she‘s on top of it 😂 5y

This was another weird book. There were parts that made me cringe--in a good way--and when the main character talks about drinking her own sister's pee from the toilet, I had to put it down and walk away 😂 It was definitely dark and twisted and just...weird. Did I like it? Yes? Lol It's definitely done its job and stuck with me the last few days. #WhiteBodies @TouchstoneBooks

2. 2 siblings...a younger sister and younger brother.

3. Only my maternal grandmother is still alive.

4. I find it interesting, but have not done any type of investigating as of yet.

The author is British and has written 3 non-fiction books on criminal forensics. This is her first novel and it‘s not bad. Nothing is as it seems in the lives of Tilda and Callie, twin girls. Tilda is an actress and Callie works in a bookshop. Tilda starts seeing a man named Felix, which soon sets off alarm bells with Callie. Felix is controlling and picky, but Tilda doesn‘t seem to mind. A quick read, with several twists.

One word. Disturbing.
These characters are W E I R D.. no other way to say it, weird. And that‘s what made it all the more unputdownable. This being Jane Robins debut novel I can‘t even imagine what‘s coming up next. I rated 4 stars

Tilda has found the perfect man but when Callie her twin meets him she's not so sure. He's too controlling and violent. Soon she's obsessed with Felix and trying to rescue her sister. Then she's given a solution but can she go through with it
Wow this was quite the ride. The story leads you in one direction then suddenly you realize it's actually going a whole other way. I love a good twist like that.
A thrilling read.

3.5⭐️ I ❤️ the creepy atmosphere, the odd characters (Callie has some disturbing habits!), & Callie's dysfunctional relationship with her more alluring twin sister. 1st-person perspective + a character with a fixation can be a little exhausting for me though! I enjoyed the overall quality and atmosphere of White Bodies, so I recommend giving it a shot if you don‘t have the same issues with being trapped in an obsessive character‘s mind as I do.

This book was chilling and disturbing in every way possible. I found myself turning the pages faster and faster to see what was going to happen to these characters next. This is a true psychological thriller. Never knowing what the real truth is, the author portrays these characters in a way that causes some speculation and wonder. With the question of "what is really going on," this book will have your skin crawling.
