Judging a Book by Its Cover
Judging a Book by Its Cover: Fans, Publishers, Designers, and the Marketing of Fiction | Nickianne Moody
8 posts
How do books attract their readers? This collection takes a closer look at book covers and their role in promoting sales and shaping readers' responses. Judging a Book by Its Cover brings together leading scholars, many with experience in the publishing industry, who examine the marketing of popular fiction across the twentieth century and beyond. Using case studies, and grounding their discussions historically and methodologically, the contributors address key themes in contemporary media, literary, publishing, and business studies related to globalisation, the correlation between text and image, identity politics, and reader reception. Topics include book covers and the internet bookstore; the links between books, the music industry, and film; literary prizes and the selling of books; subcultures and sales of young adult fiction; the cover as a signifier of literary value; and the marketing of ethnicity and lesbian pulp fiction. This exciting collection opens a new field of enquiry for scholars of book history, literature, media and communication studies, marketing, and cultural studies.

I agree that this is a good idea as it discourages some people not to touch if they don't want to buy it. I am aware that not all people will follow the rules.

What do you think?

Suet624 Hmmm...I‘ve typed 3 different responses. Clearly it‘s complicated! At least to me. 😂😂 I was going to say people should wear gloves but I‘m not sure that‘s the solution. 4y
Birdsong28 @Suet624 It is a complicated as book art does draw you in but even with gloves both disposable and non disposable once you touch something in a shop they are made redundant as the germs from a non glove wearer will get on them and if you don't change them you are just transferring the germs. 📚📖 4y
LibrarianRyan I don't mind this. If the shop could do two books, one face out, one back out. Then you get both of theme. But I get why they are going it. I was in the book store a week ago and bought everything i touched just in case. 4y

vivastory I think they should either put the front & back side-by-side, or front cover & then just print out what the blurbs say & put it in a display next to it... 4y
rwmg Hmmm. I'm not sure I could read the blurb of a book on the bottom shelf without picking it up. 4y
Gissy I concur with @vivastory At this time is necessary as a preventive strategy and at the end we don't want them to close the bookstores again. I think it is only for a period of time, we should learn, adapt or modify our way to shop for now. 4y

1⃣ I love a great cover, but it's more a consideration when purchasing books I already know. I generally don't choose books to read based on covers.
2⃣ If my summer porch were summer ready I'd be out there reading! 🌞
3⃣ I like to finish a chapter or at least a section.
4⃣ Definitely a bookmark user. Not always proper though.
5⃣ You betcha! 😄
@SilversReviews

SilversReviews Thanks for playing. Good way of choosing. I know I have seen some BAD covers, though, and the book was really good. 6y

I have agreed to be a judge in the Qld Premier‘s Literary Awards, the YA section, of course, and my books arrived yesterday. Excited but slightly overwhelmed. Fortunately I have read over half of them already. Probably won‘t be posting too much about them as I read. #literaryjudge #qldlitawards #feelhonoured #loveozya

candority Wow, no wonder you‘re overwhelmed - look at all those books! I hope judging goes well 😊 6y
