A thrilling blend of sci-fi, paranormal horror, and romance-perfect for fans of Holly Black and Leigh Bardugo When Dee Moreno makes a deal with a devil--her heart in exchange for an escape from a disastrous home life--she finds her trade may be more than she bargained for. And becoming "heartless" is only the beginning. What lies ahead is a nightmare far bigger, far more monstrous than anything she ever could have imagined. With reality turned on its head, Dee has only a group of other deal-making teens to keep her grounded, including the charming but secretive James Lancer. And as something like love grows between them amidst an otherworldly ordeal, Dee begins to wonder: can she give James her heart when it's no longer hers to give? The Hearts We Sold is a Faustian tale for the modern age that will steal your heart and break it, and leave you begging for more.

This book broke my heart, but I loved every minute of it. It had pretty much everything I love-strong characters, a touch of fantasy and paranormal mixed with contemporary, found family, and an atmospheric setting.

Interesting enough to hold my attention but not enough to make me think about it throughout the day. Literally only read it at night time before bed. Characters were done well and the plot was good.

#102 of my year! I‘m on a roll but also the first sentence had me hooked! I have heard so many great things about this one & it was part of an old Owlcrate subscription box so I definitely look forward to checking it off my TBR list.

Caffeinated_Reader Omg that was perfect. James the hobo not hobo is perfect. He is a character that will stay with me. The whole book pulls you in and sets a quick pace. It‘s a very interesting and exciting storyline and a must read! All the hype is right! 5y

A really interesting take on demons. In this world the demons are “out” and it is becoming more common for people to make deals with them. In exchange for a body part the demon grants a wish. But when Dee goes looking for a demon he doesn‘t want just any part, he wants her heart! I liked the world of this book. Pretty much like our world with the addition of demons walking about. Learning what the demons did with the body parts and why was cool.

Library run today. I went in looking for The Hearts We Sold because I read a review on goodreads that made it sound fantastic. I also wanted the Death of Mrs Westaway. The orher two were impulse grabs 😄

I don't normally post books that are not NEW in #CoverLove, however, I had to point this one out. The new paperback cover is so much better than the hardcover. I think it might get more readers interested. Your thoughts?

I wasn‘t expecting what this turned out to be, but when the ending came around with a bit of a sad twist, reality sets in about what this story is truly about, and what the value of a life had the potential to be. The pacing was a bit slow until the halfway point and then you fly through it, and there‘s some repetitive word choices and some editing issues in my opinion, but those are minor distractions. All in all, it‘s a satisfying stand alone.

This one had a decent underlining theory to it but overall it just wasn't for me. I didn't really care that much for the story and was kind of underwhelmed with the ending.

But I️ am a little 😡 that there‘s no word on a sequel or anything- not ready to say goodbye! #EmojiNov @RealLifeReading

“A life is not diminished by the fact that it wasn‘t romantic or short-lived.”

This was amazing. I loved Dee. She was amazing and relatable and one of the best main characters ever. I loved the character development of James; at first I thought he was a little pretentious but I loved how he grew as a person. I loved the female friendships between Dee, Gremma and Riley!

Continued in comments

mskayla07 Finally an actual female friendship! It‘s been very lackluster in the books I‘ve read and I‘m so glad this book had it. I loved the writing and the setting. Portland was an amazing choice to have has the setting for this story. I absolutely loved everything about this story. It made me cry, it made me feel things a book has not made me feel in a long time. 5/5 ⭐️ 7y

In the beginning, Dee was a flawed character from a broken home. It was great to see her grow as the story unraveled and find the confidence to change her personal situation. The supporting characters: her roommate Gremma, the Daemon, and the other heartless: Cora, Cal, James, and Riley were well developed and interesting. The ending will grab your heart, and yet, it's also very satisfying. A great book!

A modern society in which demons grant wishes in exchange for physical body parts fits perfectly with contemporary America. The book is focused on Dee, but it does touch on the larger ramifications of living in such a society–the rumors about celebrities and what they may have traded; the fascination around having a prosthetic; the rules the demons lay out to earn humans‘ trust.

3.5 ⭐️
What I like about the book is the originality of the story, and that it is the combination of something magical but also sci-fi. I'm also the kind of person who judge a book by the 'bestfriend' character, in this case, Gremma, which is a very cool character. What I don't like is that there are so many tropes that are typically found in YA books, and also the ending, where all the set up to the ending is only explained in the last 20 pages.

This one took me a while to get into and it wasn't what I expected it to be. Wholly original, but still some semblance of a fairy tale. I cried, the ending did not go the way I thought it would, and I'm not entirely okay with it. I understand why but man do I wish it was different.

Basically, this book rocks.
⭐️🌟⭐️🌟⭐️ and a 🍌, for good measure.
I've been on the couch all day, miserable with a sinus infection (I think; it could also be dimension-hopping beasties that decided to squat in my forehead) and this book has not only kept me company but kept my attention locked in its world.
