Their Finest
Their Finest: A Novel | Lissa Evans
From the author of the acclaimed Crooked Heart comes another smart, funny, ingenious, revealing tale of London life during the Second World War (The Independent)longlisted for the Orange Prize upon its original publication in England. It is 1940. France has fallen, and only a narrow strip of sea lies between Great Britain and invasion. The war could go either way and everyone must do their bit. Young copy writer Catrin Cole is drafted into the Ministry of Information to help write women into propaganda filmssomething that the men arent very good at. She is quickly seconded to the Ministrys latest endeavor: a heart-warming tale of bravery and rescue at Dunkirk. Its all completely fabricated, of course, but what does that matter when the nations morale is at stake? Since call-up has stripped the industry of its brightest and best, it is the callow, the jaded and the utterly unsuitable who must make up the numbers: Ambrose Hilliard, third most popular British film-star of 1924; Edith Beadmore, Madame Tussauds wardrobe assistant turned costumier; and Arthur Frith, whose peacetime job as a catering manager has not really prepared him for his sudden, unexpected elevation to Special Military Advisor. Now in a serious world, in a nation under siege, they must all swallow their mutual distaste, ill-will, and mistrust to unite for the common good, for King and Country, andin one casefor better or worse.... Evans displays a fine eye for detail and for the absurdities involved in filming. She also brilliantly evokes the disruption and dangers of wartime London. This funny, heart-warming and beautifully crafted novel is a must-read.Daily Mail (London)

Set in London during the blitz, this is about the efforts to get a “true story” of the Dunkirk evacuation made into a movie.

Have I hassled you to read a Lissa Evans book yet?! This is her first, and it‘s more complex than the other two. There are more characters and storylines, and darker darks, so to speak, although still very funny. I loved it (needless to say). There‘s a Singing In The Rain type quality to the film production story, if you need another reason to give it a try.

Because I enjoyed Crooked Heart and Old Baggage (and WW2 home front stories in general,) I ordered this one. Quite good so far, although not as humorous as her others, but the Blitz doesn‘t tend to be if you‘re telling it true.

Suet624 I‘m reading Crooked Heart right now. I know someone on Litsy recommended it, but I can‘t remember who it was! I‘m enjoying it. 5y
Aimeesue @Suet624 Their finest hour was her first book, and not as good as Crooked Heart or Old Baggage, IMO. This one was her first, and it seems like she hadn't found her voice yet. Still a good read, though! 5y
Suet624 Thanks for letting me know. 5y

Spent a good portion of the day trying to catch my dinner. Didn't catch any fish, but we did save a dragon fly, so that was something. Also didn't get to read much, but I've got the rest of the day for that, so. 😃

Added this book to my TBR today... I'd seen the movie trailer (which looks so charming btw) but had no idea it was a book, until I heard about it on my favorite movie podcast..... Now I have to wait to see the movie until I've read the book! 😆

LeeRHarry I saw the movie last weekend and enjoyed it 😊 Bill Nighy was great although when isn't he? 😊 (edited) 7y
KarenUK @LeeRHarry I love him! You're right! He's always wonderful... my favorite is 'Pride'... so lovely! 😍 (edited) 7y
LeeRHarry @KarenUK oh I loved that! My grandpa was a coal miner in South Wales and I bawled my way through that movie 😭 Btw Gemma Arterton does a good Welsh accent which made me happy 😆 7y
KarenUK @LeeRHarry I may have to break my rule and see the movie first... the cast is just so good! 7y

Last night I got to see Bill Nighy live in interview, discussing his new movie, which is an adaptation of this book. Funny and just like he is on screen (he also stole the movie!).

CrowCAH I loved him as Davy Jones in POTC DMC and AWE! 7y

Finished this one up last night. It wasn't what I expected--more poignant and less madcap, but was fun and entertaining. Would recommend, even though Elliott didn't seem enthused. #DogsofLitsy

Lissa Evans, author of Crooked Heart, returns with Their Finest—a smart and funny tale set in WWII London, and soon to be a major motion picture.
