A beloved multidisciplinary treatise comes to Penguin ClassicsSince its initial publication in 1958,The Poetics of Spacehas been a muse to philosophers, architects, writers, psychologists, critics, and readers alike. The rare work of irresistibly inviting philosophy, Bachelards seminal work brims with quiet revelations and stirring, mysterious imagery. This lyrical journey takes as its premise the emergence of the poetic image and finds an ideal metaphor in the intimate spaces of our homes. Guiding us through a stream of meditations on poetry, art, and the blooming of consciousness itself, Bachelard examines the domestic places that shape and hold our dreams and memories. Houses and rooms; cellars and attics; drawers, chests, and wardrobes; nests and shells; nooks and corners: No space is too vast or too small to be filled by our thoughts and our reveries. In Bachelards enchanting spaces,We are never real historians, but always near poets, and our emotion is perhaps nothing but an expression of a poetry that was lost. This new edition features a foreword by Mark Z. Danielewski, whose bestselling novelHouse of Leavesdrew inspiration from Bachelards writings, and an introduction by internationally renowned philosopher Richard Kearney who explains the books enduring importance and its role within Bachelards remarkable career. For more than sixty-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,500titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust theseries to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-datetranslations by award-winning translators. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Happy Valentine‘s Day litsy! Killing some time in a cafe before meeting my boyfriend for the cinema and im reading this absolutely beautiful bit of philosophy about how we understand space. Im reading it for a masters essay but it‘s so wonderful I‘d absolutely read it for no reason again!

irfee Is it an easy read or too dry and academic? 1y
Emilymdxn @irfee it‘s got really beautiful quotable writing but it‘s not easy easy, I‘d say dry but enjoyable 1y

I picked up this classic work of philosophy because of a zoom event with Myra Shapiro. She mentioned participating in regular online meetings during the pandemic to discuss each chapter with other poets. It took me 9 weeks to get through it—my brain needed to be fresh to digest the contents—and I loved it. It‘s worth the effort. I have a new way of thinking about what happens internally as we read & daydream. #Translation by Maria Jolas.

Lindy The photo shows my commonplace book, where I record memorable quotes. I filled 11 pages while reading The Poetics of Space. 3y
batsy I've read excerpts and loved it. I know what you mean about the brain needing to be fresh, though :) I should read the whole thing at some point. 3y

George Sand, dreaming beside a path of yellow sand, saw life flowing by. “What is more beautiful than a road?” she wrote. “It is the symbol and the image of an active life.”

Poetic revery, unlike somnolent revery, never falls asleep. Starting with the simplest of images, it must always set the waves of the imagination radiating.

A tower is a creation of another century. Without a past it is nothing. Indeed, a new tower would be ridiculous. But we still have books, and they give our daydreams countless dwelling-places. Is there one among us who has not spent romantic moments in the tower of a book they have read?

Such an attitude could hardly be achieved on first reading, which remains too passive. For here the reader is still something of a child, a child who is entertained by reading. But every good book should be reread as soon as it is finished. After the sketchiness of the first reading comes the creative work of reading. We must then know *the problem* that confronted the author.

Suet624 Great quote. I just finished a 560 page book and while I know it would benefit me to start again I just can't. :) But I completely agree with the concept. 3y
Lindy @Suet624 👍👯‍♂️ I‘m a deep reader, even on first reading. Maybe that‘s why there‘s no such thing as spoilers for me. An important criterion for what I consider a 5-star book is that it is worthy of rereading. 3y
Suet624 Agreed. 3y

Indeed, in our houses we have nooks and corners in which we like to curl up comfortably. To curl up belongs to the phenomenology of the verb “to inhabit,” and only those who have learned to do so can inhabit with intensity.

saresmoore I love this phrase: inhabit with intensity! 3y
Lindy @saresmoore I believe you know how to do this 😊 3y

If I were asked to name the chief benefit of the house, I should say: the house shelters daydreaming, the house protects the dreamer, the house allows one to dream in peace.

Lindy @Nutmegnc @Cathythoughts My progress through this book is very slow, but there are so many great lines. 3y
batsy I haven't read this fully yet but have read some excerpts and I love this quote. 3y
Palimpsest I own it but haven‘t read it yet. 3y
Palimpsest I do love this quote. 3y
Lindy @batsy @Palimpsest I picked it up because of an online poetry event with Myra Shapiro. She‘s 83 and said a benefit of the pandemic is doing more things with distant people, such as participating in a regular online study group that is making their way through the Poetics of Space. I can see why buddy reading it would be helpful. 3y
Palimpsest @Lindy I tend to read more at night and from what I can tell one needs to be alert and yes, probably having a buddy to help unpack everything would be helpful. (edited) 3y
Lindy @Palimpsest Yes, an alert mind is a must. I read a page or two every morning while I drink my tea. 3y

For it is a fact that poetry possesses a felicity of its own, however great the tragedy it may be called upon to illustrate.

Are the towers of our soul razed for all time?

quote
Lindy

In poetic revery the soul keeps watch, with no tension, calmed and active. To compose a finished, well-constructed poem, the mind is obliged to make projects that prefigure it. But for a simple poetic image, there is no project; a flicker of the soul is all that is needed.

Lesliereads I bought a copy of this book after reading that it was one of Sandra Cisneros‘s favorite books - but have yet to crack it open 🤔 3y
Lindy @Lesliereads I find it quite a challenge—so much philosophical theory—but also fascinating, once I grasp meaning from sentences that I have reread three times. 3y

I don‘t know how far I will get in this classic, but the passage above in Mark Z Danielewski‘s foreword has brought Piranesi strongly to mind.

The Poetics of Space | Gaston Bachelard

Everything is a result from actual meditations on the ultimate essence of everything. The mind is the all-encompassing entity that breathes and knows the actual world in which we live. If we can capture the mind in concrete categories, we become aware of a smart and living eternity that is the ultimate cause for all action and that makes us artists. This process cannot be denied: it is simply what happens when people learn to see past the limited.

For our house is our corner of the world. As has often been said, it is our first universe, a real cosmos in every sense of the word. If we look at it intimately, the humblest dwelling has beauty.

merelybookish I read this in grad school. It is poetical and interesting, unlike a lot of theoretical texts. 🙂 7y
batsy @merelybookish 😆 Good to know! I've read just an excerpt or two from The Poetics of Reverie (if I'm remembering the title right) & it's definitely not the kind of lifeless prose that shuts down your imagination 😬 7y
Centique Oh I would love to step inside this painting right now. What peace and beauty 😍 7y
