Purchase one of 1st World Library's Classic Books and help support our free internet library of downloadable eBooks. 1st World Library-Literary Society is a non-profit educational organization. Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - THIS is the forest primeval. The murmuring pines and the hemlocks, Bearded with moss, and in garments green, indistinct in the twilight, Stand like Druids of eld, with voices sad and prophetic, Stand like harpers hoar, with beards that rest on their bosoms. Loud from its rocky caverns, the deep-voiced neighboring ocean Speaks, and in accents disconsolate answers the wail of the forest. This is the forest primeval; but where are the hearts that beneath it Leaped like the roe, when he hears in the woodland the voice of the huntsman? Where is the thatch-roofed village, the home of Acadian farmers, - Men whose lives glided on like rivers that water the woodlands, Darkened by shadows of earth, but reflecting an image of heaven? Waste are those pleasant farms, and the farmers forever departed! Scattered like dust and leaves, when the mighty blasts of October Seize them, and whirl them aloft, and sprinkle them far o'er the ocean. Naught but tradition remains of the beautiful village of Grand-Pre. Ye who believe in affection that hopes, and endures, and is patient, Ye who believe in the beauty and strength of woman's devotion, List to the mournful tradition still sung by the pines of the forest; List to a Tale of Love in Acadie, home of the happy."

1. Tagged. Only read it the once, more than 30-something years ago but it touched me deeply
2. Gray
3. Jeremy Wade‘s River Monsters (completely weird and random, but son and I really enjoy watching JW together; in fact, the son called me twice tonight to give me updates on the show because I‘m out of town where I‘m not able to watch it)
4. Niffler

Hufflepuffle Me and my husband love River Monsters! The opposite of what we usually watch but there is something about it! 5y
BiblioLitten My husband and I loved watching River Monsters too! 5y
Lcsmcat I loved Evangeline! It must be 43 years since I read it. I might need to reread it soon. 5y
Texreader @Hufflepuffle @BiblioLitten Right! There‘s just something about it. I am so amazed the places he‘s been! Chernobyl! Whoa! 5y
Texreader @Lcsmcat Yes I have just put it on my wish list for Amazon. The book has stayed with me in my thoughts for decades. I‘d love to reread it and see if it is still as compelling 5y

I'm not sure if this Henry Wadsworth Longfellow quote comes from a particular work and which work it is, but I love it. 💙

This is the best 'waves breaking on the shore' pic currently stored on my iPhone--it's from Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu. 🌊

Reads much better with an audio. One of the saddest books I've read in a while, but as a young lady with Cajun heritage, I can't help but love this story.

Ok, so many of you might not know, but I'm from the village of St. Martinville, LA - the setting of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem Evangeline (maybe you studied it in High school English?)
I took this this morning from under the famous Evangeline Oak tree - the actual oak she once sat under, pining for her lost love.

LauraBeth Oh wow - what an amazing picture! I'm a Fontenot who has family in Lake Charles 😀 7y
LuLeeBelle @LauraBeth Mais tee beb, how you been doin? 😂 That's awesome! 7y
suvata That's so cool 7y
KVanRead Very cool. My husband is from Grand Pré, Nova Scotia, formerly Acadia, where the poem starts out and from where Evangeline's people were expelled. 7y
LuLeeBelle @KVanRead From the beginning to the end of the poem, how lovely! Someday I'll visit NS for sure 7y

Pickpick

So, Longfellow's style is definitely over the top, and the relentlessly rocking meter starts to wear you down after a while but I still loved this beautiful Romantic poem and its tragic story of displacement. I do wish the separated lovers had just stayed in one place and written letters to the blacksmith until they located each other but I guess that would have killed the plot.😂 #litsypoetry365 #theRomantics @SharonGoforth

Nebklvr Our teacher read this to us in country school. I think it received a one kleenex box rating! 7y
KVanRead @Nebklvr That's great. I agree😢 7y

Started Longfellow's tale of 'Le Grand Dérangement,' the Acadian expulsion from Grand Pré, Nova Scotia as my #litsypoetry365 pick yesterday. Considering that is Mr. KVR's birthplace, I figure I should finally read it.? @SharonGoforth

TheCanuckReader It's a beautiful spot with a tragic past 7y
KVanRead @TheCanuckReader Yes, it really is. I picked up this little copy of the poem (actually my MIL gifted it me) at the museum there. Glad to finally be sitting down to read it! (edited) 7y
