My Brilliant Career
My Brilliant Career | Miles Franklin
There's something wild in this ''picture of a young girl hungering for life and love in the harsh outback plains of New South Wales''.Banned by the author herself until ten years after her death in 1954, this vivid Australian classic was originally published in Edinburgh.

My current e-read is the tagged, a story of a brilliant, headstrong young woman named Sybylla growing up in the outback of Australia, determined never to marry and to live her life on her own terms unencumbered by a man. When I first borrowed it, the digital cover was the image on the left. I just renewed it, and it changed to the image on the right. Why oh why is that the cover image for a book written about, and from the POV of, a young woman?1

Aimeesue That is very odd! 4mo

"All nature was weary, and seemed to sing a dirge to that effect in the furnace-breath wind which roared among the trees on the low ranges at our back and smote the parched and thirsty ground."

This was a wonderful story of a young girl's life, her coming of age and a love story wound in, set in Australia in the late 1800's.
I've just finished it on the way home from work, a perfect end to my day :)

CarolynM Thanks for the link. Some interesting choices there. I agree about Miles Franklin and Helen Garner and I feel guiltier than usual about never having read Thea Astley. 4y

Mehso-so

The main highlights of My Brilliant Career are the language and Franklin‘s turn of phrase, which reminded me of my grandmother (makes sense, given the time period and geography). On the whole, though, I didn‘t develop a strong feeling about the book one way or another. I probably won‘t read it again, but I wouldn‘t tell anyone else that they shouldn‘t bother. Full review here: http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/my-brilliant-career-miles-franklin/

CarolynM I first read this when I was 14 years old and fell utterly in love with it. I doubt that it would have had quite the same resonance if I'd first read it as an adult. I absolutely recommend it for teenage girls - there are some marvellously quotable feminist rants in there🙂 5y
keepingupwiththepenguins @CarolynM Oh yes, it's deliciously quotable! I think I would have secretly enjoyed it as a teenager maybe, but I definitely would have rolled my eyes at the well-meaning adult who handed it to me thinking it was “good relatable content“ for me (yes, I was the worst) 😅❤️ 5y

My choice is Frank Hawdon, the English jackaroo, in My Brilliant Career. He's a pompous twit but he's really quite endearing (especially as played by Robert Grubb in the film). #lovehate

12 Aussie Books! http://www.australiangeographic.com.au/topics/history-culture/2016/02/12-books-e... - I enjoyed a few on this list - but wasn‘t a fan of Narrow Road to the Deep North. #aussiesrule2018

Joanne1 I've read some of these, Picnic at Hanging Rock totally creeped me out as a 14 year old. 6y
CarolynM I adore My Brilliant Career. I read it over and over again when I was a teenager. Loved the film too. 6y

I completely accept that this is a little stalker-ish & an invasion of privacy, but I'm having my morning coffee opposite Judy Davis, the actress who played Sybylla in the 1979 version of My Brilliant Career. I wish I could say I was actually reading the book right now, but no. However, it is another #textclassics #justsaying #ausreadingmonth

I usually try to complete my photo challenges before work but #daylightsavings made this Monday morning even more painful than usual. Here are some #commonwealthauthors from my shelves. It was interesting reading Rushdie's strong feelings against the classification while researching this prompt. #marchintoreading #marchmadness

An Australian classic, written about a young feminist of sorts, by a woman far ahead of her time. A tale of defiance, uniqueness, poverty, youth, hardship, often isolation, and love unrequited from a different angle, a must read, and popular selection for literature classes.

A great story with a fabulous fiesty female to tell it. #aussieclassics

quirkyreader I had to find my copy on the second hand market. Many times it is hard to find non American writers books unless it has been made into a film or won a literary award. At times it can be difficult to find books from our neighbours to the North and South. 7y

I found My Career Goes Bung a few weeks ago and now I'm happy to find the first one. It came through work today and I bought when my shift was over. What is super cool it that this copy is from Australia, Franklin's home. I enjoy collecting and reading books from a writers home country.
