#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024

It‘s 2AM here & since I woke up & can‘t go back to sleep, I‘m going to keep playing catch up on May reviews.🤷🏻‍♀️

Book 7 in the Lady Sherlock series & now I‘m caught up with book 8 coming out next month! I feel into the series this year through #Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent group & have loved it this year. Listened to this one on audiobook again as it was faster on library hold. Charlotte Holmes & her crew are ⬇️

DebinHawaii … at sea & of course, there‘s murder afoot. I can‘t share much plot detail because there would be spoilers from the other books but this is a good addition to the series & I love the ship setting & learning about the era‘s sea voyages & traveling. If you haven‘t read it, start with the first book: 40m

#Pemberlittens itt's time for #JaneAdjacent Book Club! Spoilers and my answers in comments.
1️⃣ I originally read couple of years ago. Planning on reading rest of Trilogy for #AusteninAugust 2024. So this was a nice refresher. I did all the formats. Swapped between print, ebook, and audio.

2️⃣ Fanny. I just loved her. (See favorite quotes.) ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 3️⃣ Big reveal when Mary gets everything wrong but somehow everything right.

4️⃣ "In that moment, Mary abandoned everything that she had been taught as a woman of proper breeding: she ran."

“I would give anyone up for five pound. I won‘t make a boffle of it.”

“It appears I‘m late to this discussion,” said Fanny. ⬇️

3d
Crinoline_Laphroaig 5️⃣ While I would love to speak perfect French wouldn't get to use that talent much in rural Oklahoma. It would however be useful to be able to draw plans for my garden.

6️⃣ Y'all know I love to dress up so definitely new ball gown.

7️⃣ Definitely gave me new prospective. How Jane and Elizabeth being close, as well as Kitty and Lydia being silly together would leave Mary on outside. ⬇️

3d
Crinoline_Laphroaig 8️⃣ I love how this book and others are making Mary the main character. I actually have a @goodreads shelf dedicated to Mary Bennet retellings. 🎩📖📚

willaful 1. First read, ebook. It was a little slow for my tastes but I think Mary is very well drawn.

2d
willaful 2. I liked the plucky woman with the baby. Mary took a lot of risks, especially there, but she definitely picked the right co-conspirator. 😁 2d
willaful 3. I think mine was also Fanny coming in and regretting missing the earlier events. She's got a good sense of humor and I'll enjoy seeing her again if I continue the series. 2d
willaful 4, Favorite quote, also “It appears I‘m late to this discussion,” said Fanny. 2d
willaful 5. I'd love to be able to speak another language but not French. If those are my only choices, I'd pick drawing. 2d
willaful 6. I'm very lucky in that my mom makes me custom made dresses that are also extremely comfy, so I don't have to choose! 😎 2d
willaful 7. The author did an excellent job of creating Mary's inner life so we can understand her. I definitely sympathize with her feelings of being out of place and awkward, and especially her grief over her father not speaking to her before he died. I'm so glad she got to read his letter. 2d
willaful 8. I'm pretty sure Mary is intended to be autistic and I'd say it's very well done. Although I didn't love the book, I might read on to see how Mary's character develops. (edited) 2d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @willaful it felt like a lot of set up. But now that's out of the way I'm looking forward to book 2. Plan on reading this summer. Will see how it goes. Woman with baby was a hoot. They need to recruit her as a spy. 1d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @willaful so glad you joined in! 1d
willaful I forgot to add, I really like all the precise historical details. Fascinating times before envelopes! 17h
Crinoline_Laphroaig @willaful it was fascinating! And that sender didn't pay postage. 16h
willaful @Crinoline_Laphroaig Yeah, an odd system. I wonder what the justification was. 15h

Such a crazy week! I‘m still putting together my May TBR but here is my April recap. Surprisingly, I finished 18 books this month. The fact that several were short novellas or children‘s books helped.😉

I took part in #SundayBuddyRead #JaneAdjacent #ChildrensClassicRead2024 NancyDrewBR #BobWhiteBuddies #SheSaid #TravelingStars2024 & #SeasonalCozies I also finished all 3 of my #Roll100 books & read several #SeriesLove2024 books & one from my ⬇️

DebinHawaii #AuldLangSpine list & knocked out a couple of challenge prompts. While I didn‘t get around to a couple of books/challenges I wanted to, I feel great about the month. I enjoyed most of what I read but standouts were Zorrie, The Second, Saving Mr. Rochester, A First Time for Everything & the final 2 1/2 books in The Naturals series. 1mo

Shades of Milk and Honey | Mary Robinette Kowal

Mehso-so

I had read some of Kowal‘s Lady Astronaut books, so when I saw this in a LFL a couple years ago, I snatched it up! I was interested to see what Kowal did with a completely different genre than the Lady Astronaut series. So when #JaneAdjacent planned this for their April book, I was excited to tag along! It sounded right up my alley—Austen-esque with a touch of magic—and was definitely as advertised, with a delightfully familiar Jane Austen feel.⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) My gripes: the pacing was off, with a slow start then ALL THE ACTION and an abrupt happy ending packed into the last few chapters. There was good character development with the MC, but most of the others felt like placeholders for Jane Austen types, so much so that meeting new characters often felt like a game of “Spot the Mr. Darcy.” And, I was annoyed with all the anachronistic phrases sprinkled throughout. ⤵️ 1mo
BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) All of that said, I did enjoy the book for what it was, and the abruptness of the ending kind of makes me want to see what‘s in store for the characters in the next book! Thank you to @StayCurious for hosting the buddy read and posting such fun check-ins along the way! 1mo
Princess-Kingofkings I agree about the pacing. It felt odd. 1mo

#Pemberlittens its's time for #JaneAdjacent Book Club!
1️⃣ Reread. I originally listened to the audiobook when it first came out. Love that it's narrated by Richard Armitage. Also own a print copy. First Impressions - such a gorgeous cover.
2️⃣ Adam. His mother reminds me of my mother. “You read too much. You read her too much."
3️⃣ Human chain to fill Adam's haycart with books and then drive through town.
⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 4️⃣ "Yet on his loneliest of days, he sometimes felt as if he was being saved by Jane Austen." This was teenage me. I want 'Saved by Jane Austen' on a tshirt.

"Despite her continued and extensive reading, Evie‘s favourite book remained Pride and Prejudice. Almost as a type of test, she had pressed it on her limited social circle..... If they failed to enjoy or— even worse— finish the book, she wrote them off just as dismissively."
⬇️

1mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig “But one can always read Austen.”

5️⃣ "I‘ll take Lizzie over Emma any day.” Lizzie taught me to be an Obstinate Headstrong Girl and that has served me well.⬇️

1mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 6️⃣ For years I took part in #AusteninAusten. While it's no longer official event, I still dedicate every August to Austen. My husband often quips how is August any different than the rest of the year.

I generally reread Pride and Prejudice in my Birthday month of June. When I first started keeping track on @Goodreads I estimated I had read every other year since I was 16. My current read count is 18 times and that's probably on low side.⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 7️⃣ While both have beautiful gardens, The Great House has a Library.

8️⃣ I would live there, put up a Notice 'to apply to the Housekeeper for tours'. I would cosplay Mrs. Reynolds from Pride and Prejudice, give tours, then make up stories about myself.⬇️

1mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 9️⃣ You know that game of what one book would you take on a long journey or want if stranded on a deserted island? My answer is always 'my volume of the Complete Works of Jane Austen'. 🎩📖📚
