This was good, but not as tight & well paced as Elena Knows. I think perhaps because even though this is only slightly over 200 pages, the story was drawn out enough to lose a bit of steam. With Elena Knows the tension just ratchets up until BAM Claudia hits you over the head with the end.

With this if she could have somehow continued the railroad scenes as standalone chapters, they may have propelled the story better.

New bill with all kinds of good stuff on our governor‘s desk, including this provision. 😁 Also applaud the mental health education!

“It also includes a ban on book bans — language that prohibits public and school libraries from removing or restricting access to a book “based solely on its viewpoint or the messages, ideas or opinions it conveys” and that insulates library employees from discipline against them for complying with the new rules.”

Graywacke Good. Although 1 of 50 feels small here in tx where the governor is holding up massive $$ in available school funding for his voucher push, leading to state-wide layoffs. 😢 3d
Tamra @Graywacke 😩 that‘s terrible! We too are experiencing layoffs, primarily due to declining enrollment. But that in turn is the legislature not investing enough in education at all levels. 3d

So true; mature love is far more nuanced and complex than young love. ♥️ The singular is plural and the plural is singular. My husband and I were even younger.

Cortg I was 23 when I married. 25+ years we‘re still married, but marriage was much different then, and easier. 3d

Twisty! I did not want to put this down. It was the perfect balance of brain candy & puzzle to wind up what is always a fatiguing spring semester.

The title is odd and a bit misleading. And the end, well one needs to go into thrillers with a strictly entertainment mindset.

batsy Sounds good! We always need a thriller like this for when the brain wants fun junk 😆🍿 6d

Oh, how any reader will love to loathe Undine. What a superficial, entitled, conniving, greedy, morally bankrupt twit! Add in short sighted; she‘d cut off her nose to spite her face.

At my husband‘s suggestion after talking about quiet fiction…..I‘m going to start this one.

It‘s a crying shame lilacs wilt so quickly after cutting because the fragrance is divine.

Aimeesue I spent two weeks going out back (with the dogs, so I didn‘t look weird) and hanging out by my tiny lilac bushes so I could huff the blooms. 😂 They‘re tiny and this was the first year any of them bloomed - I was thrilled! They‘re gone too fast. 1w

Indonesian Shrimp Fried Rice for #Mtcookbook! I love all of the concise options ATK offers in one place. I‘m a big fan of tables & charts with variations of something.

I enjoyed this treacherous tale for the most part, but the end was questionable. It just…… ended…..unless I missed something. I needed something more.

Why was the setting nearly exclusively in one bed chamber or another? 😜 Unless chambers were the equivalent of apartments today.

🤔 I was really excited about this book after hearing an interview with Dan on NPR - no plain tomato based sauces! Now that I‘ve thumbed through it, I‘m on the fence so I‘m taking that as a sign I shouldn‘t rush out to buy it. I like the creativity, but many of the recipes are probably best suited for leisurely weekend cooking and when the pantry is stocked with specialty ingredients. I do think I‘d really like the Asian fusion dishes.

Fayne: A Novel | Ann-Marie MacDonald
post image
Pickpick

I looked forward to reading a chapter of this chunkster each night. It is suspenseful, atmospheric, gothic, historical fiction with a couple of twists. It begs questions about what is “natural”, essential identity, and belonging.

Fayne lies within a disputed region between Scotland & England. Resolution either way will dissolve the title, which is central to the main idea.

I‘m a tad disappointed with the end, it was unnecessarily drawn out.

Read this for IRL book club and I think I was the only one who liked it! It‘s a difficult tale to summarize but it‘s about the human condition. The absurdity he envelopes it in doesn‘t hide the sadness & consequences of loneliness. I read the prologue 3x because first, Vonnegut bares his soul in his own detached way, and second, it encapsulates the story which follows.

This is my first Vonnegut and I‘m glad to have read it.

Tamra It is scathing in the sense he criticizes all of our futile attempts to fill emotional voids with consumerism and conquest. But it also appears our misguided natures carry on into the afterlife. 🫢 (edited) 1mo

Ruthiella Great review! “Cilantro writer” 😂 I love him and his exasperation at human behavior, but for sure understand why some don‘t like his works. I‘m glad you liked it though. 👍 1mo
Tamra @Ruthiella which is your favorite? 1mo
Ruthiella I‘m certainly not even close to becoming a completist (yet). Bluebeard was my first and my favorites are Galapagos, Ca‘s Cradle and the most famous (edited) 1mo
Tamra @Ruthiella thanks for the tip! I really should try Slaughterhouse Five. 1mo
Leftcoastzen I adore him ! He just gets it . I couldn‘t pick a favorite. I probably should reread, see if I still agree with myself. 😄 1mo
Tamra @Leftcoastzen I‘m sometimes afraid to reread for fear of a book not holding up. 1mo
Leftcoastzen @Tamra me too! 1mo

Redemption per the kids for the green chile cornbread recipe from the tagged book - a “tamale” pie. My daughter reports the chiles are covered up. 😜

Freezing remainder of the cornbread for a future pie. #Mtcookbook

mcctrish I LOVE cornbread with my whole heart 1mo
Tamra @mcctrish it was delicious but the kids didn‘t like the green chiles. 🙄 Now I need to think of something to top it with so they‘ll happily eat it . 😆 (edited) 1mo

mabell I don‘t think it would work with the chicken, but I make panzanella with leftover cornbread 😊 This sounds yummy by the way! 1mo
Tamra @mabell I was thinking perhaps taco fillings - using the cornbread as a base. 🤔 Kind of an inverted taco pie or perhaps crumble the bread on top of the filling & melt cheese. 1mo
lazydaizee This looks tasty, save some for me. 1mo
mabell @Tamra You can never go wrong with taco pie or melted cheese 😄 1mo

Speculative meanderings with the MC - not really in my wheelhouse.

This wasn‘t the reading experience of Peace Like A River, but to be fair I read it decades ago and no doubt my preferences have changed.

Buffalo chicken chili for an easy win on #Mtcookbook!

Kids were not thrilled with the beans, but husband and I loved it! After reading the ingredient list on a bottle of Buffalo sauce I opted for regular hot sauce instead.

julieclair Sounds yummy and easy. My kind of recipe! 1mo
mabell Oooo and topped with bleu cheese! 1mo
Tamra @julieclair it‘s a perfect weeknight meal. 1mo

Vanilla flavoring. It was entertaining enough to continue listening through to the end, but I won‘t likely remember it.

Hooked_on_books That‘s too bad, but what a cool cover! 2mo
Cathythoughts Yes I think his last one was like that too. I enjoyed it to a certain extent , but wouldn‘t be rushing back for more. 2mo
Tamra @Cathythoughts @Hooked_on_books I liked the setting a lot, but I wasn‘t sitting on the edge of my seat. I‘d be willing to listen to another. 2mo

I was just taken for an absolute joyride of an April Fool‘s joke by Content with their newsletter announcing a name change to align with the city slogan, along with other new tidbits & links. Husband & I spent 15 minutes discussing and I even looked at the new commemorative sticker more than once before reading the label.

Hook, line, & sinker. 🤣🤣

Pickpick

There is a palpable tension and anxiety that builds in this novel because the MC Sunday seems so vulnerable, though there isn‘t anything explicitly threatening in it. I could feel how Sunday‘s rich inner emotional life conflicted with the flat affect of autism she presented. It was a relief when she quit struggling to conform to social expectations and allowed herself to just be. Worth a reread!

Tamra So interesting that verbal communication is a barrier, but not sign language. Loved that mutually accepting relationship! (edited) 2mo
Aimeesue Verbal communication can be harder, I think, because there are SO many shades of meaning, which change depending on intonation, body language, facial expression, relationships, etc, etc. That takes a lot of processing. ASL can be just as nuanced, but it also isn‘t used as a word-for-word language, so can be easier to grasp the concept/ideas without getting so bogged down on denotative meanings. Often cuts out a lot of the “noise” in communication. 2mo
Tamra @Aimeesue that makes total sense. Thank you! 2mo

What?! 😳🫨😬😵‍💫 I am not going to pretend to understand this descent into madness & rage & starvation, in all of the senses of these words.

“The way everything belongs to nature, malicious and beautiful.”

Tamra Fever dream is an apt description. Soft pick. (edited) 2mo

Cathythoughts Yum 😋♥️ 2mo
Tamra @ShelleyBooksie yes - I love the book, it‘s a favorite. I recommend checking it out of the library if you can to see if it‘s a fit for you. The recipe is easy; make your favorite red sauce pasta, pour onto sheet pan, dollop on ricotta, fresh mozzarella bits, & Parmesan cheese. Broil for 5-7 min. 2mo

We Are Light | Gerda Blees
post image
Pickpick

I am really surprised I haven‘t seen or heard more about this book! First, Blees is a poet so each word matters. Second, the structure is wonderfully imaginative in that the story unfolds over 25 chapters, each having a distinct voice, including that of inanimate objects. (Imagine the translation work! 😅) Finally, it was inspired by a true story, sadly.

It‘s the type of book that leaves an impression & something to think about. 👍🏾👍🏾

Tamra The best chapter is the one in which the story is the narrator! Complaining about Blees. 😆 (edited) 2mo
BarbaraBB I didn‘t know this book has been translated. I was obsessed with these people at the time. I followed them on Facebook and saw them getting thinner every day. I was really afraid another one of them would die. 2mo
Cathythoughts Sounds fascinating. Stacked. 2mo
