It‘s now June so that means it‘s time for one of our #PersephoneClub reads!

@quietjenn ‘s pick for us this month is Greenery Street by Denis Mackail. This is a casual buddy read; read and comment on each other‘s posts and reviews as you see them. We usually aim to finish by the middle of the month but that‘s not written in stone. 😉 And anyone is welcome to read along with us, of course!

Tamra Another I‘m looking forward to this month! 👏🏾 14h

Learned by Heart | Emma Donoghue
post image

I‘m generally pretty hit-or-miss with Emma Donoghue‘s novels but I‘m enjoying this one!

(I‘ve liked Slammerkin, The Wonder, and Room but bailed on a few others).

sarahbarnes I want to read this one! 1w
Tamra Nothing like a satisfying Friday night read.☺️ 1w
Cathythoughts This one looks good Leah. I liked Wonder too. I‘ve always been afraid to read The Room. ❤️ 1w

LeahBergen @sarahbarnes I think I‘m enjoying it so much because I like the “Gentleman Jack” TV series and then read a biography of Anne Lister. She was quite remarkable and I‘m liking this (fictional) peak at her childhood! 1w
LeahBergen @Tamra Can‘t beat it! 😀 1w
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts I went to hear the author read from Room and then read it myself right afterwards. I think it made it easier! 1w
Hooked_on_books I liked this one. Have you tried Haven? It took me a bit to settle into it, but I ended up really liking it. 1w

willaful Such wonderful news!

@elkeOriginal things can be precarious for a small press. Whether there are more may depend on how this does. I'm going to buy it and request it at all my libraries, that's for certain!

batsy That's some wonderfully uplifting news! ❤️ 2w
LeahBergen @elkeOriginal @willaful There was another short newsletter out today regarding the change of company name to Dean Street Press Limited (from the previous Dean Street Press), so perhaps they‘re merely proceeding with caution while restructuring? 🤞 2w

The Adventures of Alice Laselles | Queen Of Great Britain Victoria
post image

It‘s Victoria Day today in Canada (National Patriots‘ Day in Quebec) so I picked up this children‘s story written by Queen Victoria when she was ten years old. It‘s illustrated with the paper dolls she and her governess made and painted, which are then added into scenes by a modern artist.

The story itself is sweet and funny; one of the students at the boarding school is a French orphan with an eyepatch who lost an eye due to smallpox. 🫢

Tamra Yikes! 2w
LeahBergen @Tamra Right? And she just added it into her little story like it was a common occurrence. 😳 2w
Tamra @LeahBergen seems so incongruous. 🫤 2w
See All 8 Comments
Jess_Read_This Ohhh… wow.. setting the bar early for tragic Victorian plots. It‘s kind of amazing for me to think about how I‘m not sure if I even knew what smallpox was when I was ten unless it was something I read about. And she‘s a ten year old incorporating it into her story characters! Just how vastly different times are. 2w
LeahBergen @Jess_Read_This @Tamra It‘s a totally bizarre little tale. I recommend giving it a quick read if you ever come across it! 2w

The Sleeping Beauty | Elizabeth Taylor
post image

I haven‘t read an Elizabeth Taylor (not the movie star 😆) novel in ages and I forgot how much I love sinking into her writing. The forward mentions the Updike quote about giving “the mundane its beautiful due” and that‘s a perfect description of what she does so well.

Aimeesue Taylor is so good! 2w

Pickpick

This book reminded me so much of the ‘70s era, “woman fleeing a house” covered Gothics that I loved as an early teen.

It had it all: a spooky manor on the moors, an eye-wateringly dim heroine, a dishy hero who catches her every faint, and even a parrot squawking out clues to the “mystery”. We as readers can see how this mystery is going to pan out from a mile away but the journey is campy and fun. A great “flu read”! 😆

Pickpick

Dorothy Whipple is always an enjoyable read and this one was no exception. As the afterword states, it‘s a “comforting middle-class drama” but I also found it quite suspenseful due to the titular villain, Mr. Knight. It had the feel of a 1930s Rosamunde Pilcher, if that makes sense? 😆

What did you think, #PersephoneClub ?

#PersephoneBooks

CarolynM I‘m finding it a bit hard to get into. Probably more about me than the book. 2mo
Cathythoughts I did really love it, and got totally caught up in the story. This would be a reread for me. But I confess to watching the film and then slacking off on the reread … I‘m dipping in and out ❤️ and Yes , definitely suspenseful due to Mr Knight ! (edited) 2mo

LeahBergen @andrew61 That‘s so true, Andrew. And there‘s also a touch of sadness in how much Celia is willing to sacrifice to ensure that Freda enjoys her youth, isn‘t there? 2mo
andrew61 @LeahBergen, yes, freda is a bit of a madam. But I loved Ruth and Douglas. 2mo

Twelve-year-old Elizabeth is sent to spend the summer with her distracted, scholarly aunt at a Scottish manor house and finds herself mysteriously able to interact with the 18th-century family who once lived there.

“Time-slip” stories were a huge childhood favourite of mine and this 1975 novel is such a good addition to the genre.

Anna and Her Daughters | D.E. Stevenson
post image
Pickpick

Anna and her three daughters are left with very little money after the death of their husband and father. They must pull up stakes and leave their posh London life for a small cottage in Scotland (as one does). It starts off with this very Sense and Sensibility type plot but moves on into the familiar world we come to expect from DE Stevenson.

I thoroughly enjoyed it but liked the first half a wee bit more than the last.

#FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

LeahBergen @Tamra It‘s a speedy read! 3mo
LeahBergen @jlhammar Thanks! You‘ll have to tell me who you think is each character on this cover. 😂 3mo
LeahBergen @Ruthiella And just like S&S, I‘m looking at this “little cottage” (on the cover of my edition) and thinking “that‘s not so small”. 😆 3mo
CatLass007 Thank you. 3mo
quietjenn I read the first chapter or two at the beginning of the month, then set it aside because I wanted to read it straight through and couldn't at that point. But this weekend is supposed to be another rainy one, so ... Will definitely be on the lookout for those parallels! 3mo

erzascarletbookgasm I‘m in love with these covers! I envy your collection 😍 3mo

LeahBergen @rockpools @rubyslippersreads @erzascarletbookgasm Thanks! I always seem to like the colour palette on covers from this era. 😊 3mo
LeahBergen @BarbaraBB No, these are vintage editions of an author reprinted by Furrowed Middlebrow Press (I can‘t remember if you‘ve read any of these with us? 🤔). She writes light, mid-20th century romantic fiction, primarily set in Scotland. Very cozy type reads! 3mo
LeahBergen @BarbaraBB Oh, and Persephone Books has republished a few of her novels as well. 3mo
BarbaraBB I know her only from Miss Buncle but will certainly check these out, thanks! 3mo

LeahBergen @elkeOriginal Naturally! 😆 3mo
Cathythoughts Fabulous covers 🥰🥰🥰 3mo
jlhammar Okay, my guess upon finishing...Anna is in the forefront with the pink coat (looks too mature to me to be Helen and Helen and Rosalie are said to resemble her, right?) and Jane in the yellow coat. Helen & Rosalie in the background near the cottage. What do you think? 3mo
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts Aren‘t they? 😘 3mo
LeahBergen @jlhammar That was my guess, too! 👍 3mo
CarolynM I didn‘t think of S&S, but you are right! For me, though, this one was a bit more fun. Looks like your dust jacket is in a bit better condition than mine😆 3mo

Ruthiella If you read only one Westmacott, I recommend Absent in the Spring. It‘s the best of all of them IMO. And the shortest! 😆 Just note, she‘s very fond of using ellipses… to the point of annoyance… 3mo
LeahBergen @sarahbarnes It‘s my never ending goal. 😆 3mo

Pickpick

I had always avoided this Persephone novel as the subject matter (a missing child) seemed so disturbing. Well, it WAS disturbing but also utterly compelling and extremely well-written. It‘s best to go in without reading any blurbs or reviews as it does have some great twists.

A solid #PersephoneClub pick!

Aimeesue I‘ve avoided it for the same reason, but I absolutely agree that it‘s an excellent book. The writing is stellar. 4mo

LeahBergen @sisilia 😆 Thanks, Sisilia! 3mo
LeahBergen @CarolynM I always do that, too. 😊 3mo
Caryl I think my favorite parts were: Those first two pages, the description near the end of Susan remembering and missing Alex that was so sensory-intense (pages 332-333), and the ending. I thought it was genius to write the ending from the perspective of Detective Menetti. 3mo
CarolynM I wouldn‘t have chosen to read this one, but I‘m glad I did. I‘m also going to track down more of her work. I really liked that she took us far enough into the darkness to have an impact without descending completely into depravity. 3mo
LeahBergen @Caryl Oh, that‘s so true! That ending from his point of view WAS genius. 3mo
LeahBergen @CarolynM You are so right! My worry abound this one (going in) is that it would be TOO gruelling (ie; as to the mother‘s pain, etc) and it totally wasn‘t. It was such a … what‘s the word… approachable?… look into a profound and horrifying experience. 3mo

The Novels of Georgette Heyer | Jennifer Kloester
post image
Pickpick

This fantastic reference work is comprised of short essays on every Heyer novel in publication order, all 56 of them. Each chapter is interspersed with snippets from Heyer‘s letters, family photos and images of book covers. We read which novels Heyer thought were her best, which ones she tried to suppress, and oodles of other fascinating tidbits. I‘m obsessed. 😆

I highly recommend it to my fellow GH fans here on Litsy!

Gissy 👌❤️ 4mo
MrsMalaprop I was chatting to a work colleagues on my first day back after summer break & she told me she discovered a new author & went down a rabbit hole, reading the author‘s many books, listening to podcasts about her etc. So I quickly stacked one of her books on Litsy to look into her later. I‘ve read quite a few (7 or 8?) of Miss Read‘s Fairacre novels but this is my first foray into the Thrush Green series. It‘s quiet and charming and I‘m enjoying it immensely!

squirrelbrain Oh I used to love the Miss Read books when I was younger! They had loads of them in our teeny tiny village library. 4mo
rubyslippersreads Believe it or not, I haven‘t read Miss Read. Your lovely copies are inspiring me, though. 4mo

LeahBergen @Leftcoastzen @Tamra Yes, I definitely think I was swayed by the cover. 😆 5mo
LeahBergen @Aims42 @quietjenn @erzascarletbookgasm It‘s quite a cozy little read, so far. 👍 5mo
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts Me, too! Especially since the guy on the top floor is a chef. 😆 5mo
charl08 Tempting. Although I don't really need any encouragement in that food direction! 5mo
Amiable What an arresting cover! It catches the eye and makes you really study it for all the details. 5mo

Murder While You Work | Susan Scarlett
post image
Pickpick

Crikey, #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub ! This was a bit of a departure from our usual Scarletts, wasn‘t it? 😆 We get the “meet cute” of a charming couple that we come to expect from her novels but then she throws in a completely terrifying antagonist with an equally gruesome child. It was propulsively readable and I loved it.

CarolynM Nice review! It was quite different, but at least the good people winning and the bad losing was still there🙂 5mo
erzascarletbookgasm Cool! Can‘t wait to read this. 5mo

Cathythoughts Great review! I hadn‘t intended to read this one , but your review has changed all that. Stacked 👍🏻♥️ 5mo
Bren912 You had me at “crikey” 5mo
julieclair Can‘t wait to read this! 5mo
Tamra 💙 Terrific! I was just describing the same to my husband; this wasn‘t a typical light entertainment from FurrowedMiddleBrow. I enjoyed the mystery departure - didn‘t want to put it down! 🥹😬 5mo
jlhammar “Chicken soup, chicken soup.” Desmond is a tad creepy. Just read that chicken carcass part last night 😬 Really enjoying it so far! 5mo
batsy Great review! I've just started and liking the tone of it so far (felt so invested in a lipstick 😆). Happy to see that it's a resounding pick for everyone so far. 5mo
elkeOriginal Perfect review - ‘terrifying‘, ‘gruesome,‘ CRIKEY! Love your book stack too - excellent set😉 5mo
Ruthiella I also enjoy this departure from the imprint‘s usual fare. It‘s a nice preparation for our upcoming May inaugural mystery read. 😃 5mo
quietjenn What a way with words you have here 😅. And you are utterly correct with them! 5mo
rubyslippersreads I just started this, but am loving it so far (except for Desmond). Mrs. Roal gives off some real Miss Gulch vibes, threatening to have Mr. Jones destroyed. 😠 5mo
LeahBergen @CarolynM As we come to expect from our Furrowed Middlebrows! 👍 5mo
LeahBergen @erzascarletbookgasm I think you‘ll like it! 5mo
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts I hope you like it, Cathy! 🤞 5mo
LeahBergen @Bren912 😆😆 5mo
LeahBergen @julieclair Enjoy! 😊 5mo
LeahBergen @Tamra It had surprisingly gothic undertones, didn‘t it? 5mo
LeahBergen @jlhammar Eek! 😆😆 5mo
LeahBergen @batsy I was like, “No!!! Go get that lipstick!” 😂 5mo
LeahBergen @elkeOriginal 😆 And thanks! I had started a Greyladies collection of her republished novels before FM decided to bring them out again. I now have a mixture of the two editions! 5mo
LeahBergen @Ruthiella I was thinking ahead to that, too! 👍 5mo
LeahBergen @quietjenn 😂😂 5mo
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads Both he and his mother are “nasty pieces of work”. 😆 5mo
elkeOriginal @LeahBergen Honestly, I have always been deeply annoyed at how ugly FM spines are so seeing your Greyladies makes me want to collect those instead 🤦🏼‍♀️📚 5mo
LeahBergen @elkeOriginal They are ugly, aren‘t they? The covers of the early Greyladies are plain but they‘ve moved on to pretty vintage illustrations in recent years. 5mo
Jess_Read_This Terrific review! Hoping to dive into this one today. Greyladies just know how to produce such lovely editions. I‘ve got a mix too. I was late to the party on buying them. Some of the out print ones are pricey on Abe! But I always love to see them 😊 5mo
LeahBergen @Jess_Read_This There are several that I‘m always on the hunt for! 😆 5mo

The Visitors: A Novel | Sally Beauman
post image

My last book of 2023 was Lucy Worsley‘s enjoyable middle grade novel about Jane Austen‘s nieces. I‘ve been feeling a little Egypt-ish of late so I‘m going to dive into the tagged book that‘s been on my TBR for several years now. I‘m trying to start the new year off by continuing to whittle down the backlog of books on my shelves… let‘s see how long that lasts! 😆

Thanks for doing this again, @BookNAround ! Happy New Year, everyone! 🎉

#LastFirst

Oh, my goodness, @AshRob22 ! You totally spoiled me!

I‘m so excited to get to these books and I love all the treats, tea, tea ball, tarot envelope, Swedish dishcloth (my faves!), ghost bookmark, stickers, and earrings. My absolute favourite though? The GORGEOUS handmade cross-stitch bookmark! 🖤 And I loved the spooky buggy burlap wrapping. 😆😆

Thank you SO much and a big happy #CreepyChristmas to you! 😘😘

Thanks again to our host, @teebe !
