Wow!!! It‘s been a long time since a book has gripped me so much. Live the characters, love the writing, love the twists.

I absolutely understand why this might not be everyone‘s cup of tea but I just love the absurdism and trying to figure out what it means. I picked this up because I am enjoying the short stories in What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours and wondered what a novel by this author would be like. Think I want to read a more normal book next but I want to read more Oyeyemi eventually! The scenarios just stick in your mind and don‘t let you go.

I‘ve been reading this for years and finally finished! Definitely a pick for anyone as fascinated with Richard Nixon as I am. I realized near the end that the day I‘m planning to leave Japan after 17 years here is the 49th anniversary of his resignation, so the last part about his departure particularly resonated. #chunskter

While cozy, this was so beautiful that it brought tears to my eyes several times. Once again, putting up covers of some other books I read this year for posterity—I‘d like to keep track of all of them. Love my Kobo!!💕

I‘d been so busy with work that I wasn‘t reading much for so long.
These are the books I read during my vacation home! (Aside from The Mysterious Benedict Society, which I read last fall-ish.) I‘m tagging the one I liked the best. It was really a narrative style that I love—want to read more by John Green for sure! I didn‘t love ACoTaR or EHaD, but a lot of reviews say the sequels are better—thoughts on whether I should give them a chance?

#BFC2022 update! @wanderinglynn
I am vastly exceeding my walking goal; we had such a long snowy winter and I missed walking so much! Now that the weather is good I just keep wanting to get outside!
But my reading has screeched to a stop this month. I am enjoying the tagged book, and while I could just go with the flow and keep reading, I have been stopping to look up every word or reference I don't know. I'm learning a lot, but progress is slow!

1. The setting!
2. More character development. There is a sequel, but I didn‘t quite like the first book enough to feel compelled to read it.

“The Bone Orchard” is unfortunately encountering delays in shipping😢 So I started this, thinking it would be sufficiently different. I‘ve already added some words to my previously-unknown-vocabulary list!

This looks like fun, @wanderinglynn ! I‘m going to try #BFC2022 in April. I‘ll set my goals a bit low as I sometimes get discouraged early if I set them too high.
1. Reading goal: Get to page 791 in The Memoirs of Richard Nixon (100 pages of progress) and read 2 other books in addition.
2. Fitness goal: Take a walk outside for an hour at least twice a week.

wanderinglynn Welcome! We‘re happy you‘ve joined us. Goals are adaptable—so if you find a goal isn‘t working for you for whatever reason, adapt it. Posting is always optional. But if you do post, you can earn entries to the quarterly drawing. This post earned you an entry! Any questions, please don‘t hesitate to ask. 😀 2y
Kyndrill @wanderinglynn Thank you! It‘s good to know I can change them if they‘re not working for me, and it seems fun to choose new goals every month, too! 2y
wanderinglynn Yes, #BFC understands that Life Happens. For example, I‘ll be traveling in April, so I need to be flexible with my workout every day goal because it won‘t be possible on the travel days. And there‘s no failing a goal in #BFC. There‘s only room for improvement 😉 2y
Kyndrill @wanderinglynn I love that there‘s no failing it👍😊 2y

Just watched this fabulous reading by and interview with Sara, looks like the replay is still up!

https://www.crowdcast.io/e/virtual-event---sara-a-/1

Sara is part of my writer's group back home so I was lucky enough to hear her read chapters of this book while in progress, but I left before I could hear the ending. I pre-ordered and can't wait till it's delivered!!

Kyndrill This is a great non-spoilery review about its themes, if anyone is curious!

#WondrousWednesday @Eggs

I love seeing everyone‘s beautiful shelves!💕📚

2. Hmm, I haven‘t read that many yet. I think the fact that I‘m reading this much at all is the most important! It‘s a big deal for me😊
3. I rarely DNF but last year I stopped reading “The Shadow of What Was Lost” about 1/4 of the way in. It just didn‘t work for me at all and I‘m still surprised by how few negative reviews I can find! Maybe it was just me😅

2. Not necessarily, but a good one-word title can sound mysterious and intriguing and make me want to know more. I agree about “Divergent”!

1. The tagged book “The Diamond Age”
2. A family friend gave it to me for my birthday when I was still in my early teens. I was more into fantasy than science fiction but she told me what rave reviews this book had gotten. I think I felt it was above my reading level and looking now it does have a lot of small print. I‘ve kept it with me but never actually started reading it! Maybe I‘ll read it next…?

I love coming into a book not knowing anything about it. If someone I trust raves about a book, I'll just read it without even reading the back cover--I love being surprised! Is it just me or does everyone compare this to Harry Potter? Not just the premise, but all the zany magic too. I can't wait to finish it so I can look at reviews--always afraid of seeing spoilers, so I tend to read reviews only after finishing a book😁

Life of Pi | Yann Martel

I tried deactivating Facebook and Instagram as an experiment in February and it's going great. I feel much more at peace, and thanks to that I ended up buying this book. I had to wait for a prescription, and with nothing to look at on my phone I wandered around and happened to find a shop where they were selling English books! I chose “Life of Pi“ because I'd seen the movie years ago and liked it.

Kyndrill I kept waiting for the tiger to show up🐯 but having finished it now I think my favorite part was the beginning, admittedly very slow and full of facts about zoology and comparative religion, but written in a conversational, calming style that pulled me into a part of 1970's India. Some of quitting social media (except for Litsy!) was to try to re-find myself through books and it seems to be working. Who knew I liked comparative religion? 2y
Kyndrill I can't believe I finished this book so quickly. The short chapters made it easy to keep going. I have already read more this year than all of last year. All I can do on my phone is check email and Litsy, so thanks to the Littens it quickly becomes inspiration to read!

@robinb Just wanted to let you know how the deactivating of social media is going 😊
2y
robinb It sounds like it‘s going great!! I‘m so torn with Facebook. I‘m hardly on there except to wish happy birthdays, but it does help with knowing what I need to know from back home. I‘m still debating but know there are probably more pros than cons for getting off. Thanks for your update! 😊 2y
Kyndrill @robinb It is a bit weird not to know how people are doing… I want to make an effort to write emails or even just notes on Messenger to keep up with people. I actually think I will reactivate eventually, or maybe go through phases of activating and deactivating depending on my mood😊 2y
robinb @Kyndrill Yes, I think the on and off might be my best bet too. Not go totally cold turkey. 😂😂 2y

This was my first book by Naomi Novik, and wow! Wow! This was a unique interweaving of the stories of several characters, and I was particularly impressed with how different all of the the characters' voices were as she switched perspectives between them. A great winter read as this is still the view out my window.

julesG Nice view! 2y
Kyndrill @julesG Thanks! I do love my view. I'll probably post more pictures as the seasons change :) 2y
LitStephanie Beautiful view to read that book by! I liked this book, too. 2y

Kyndrill @LitStephanie It definitely helped me feel all the coldness described in the book😆 It‘s a great book, isn‘t it? 2y
LitStephanie @Kyndrill I really found the portrayal of how the Jewish community is treated (obviously based on medieval Europe) interesting. 2y
Kyndrill Yes, I loved that too… a similar story could have been told without that aspect but it gave everything about Miryem‘s story, family, and world so much more depth. 2y

Thanks for tagging me @RamsFan1963 and @BethM ! My first #Two4Tuesday, belatedly: 1. No, but I was lucky enough to get some chocolates!
2. I like a good friends to lovers premise when it‘s done well. Or just a good friendship story even if it stays platonic!

wanderinglynn I see you‘re in Hokkaido. I‘m in Okinawa! 👋🏻 2y
Kyndrill @wanderinglynn Oh, wow! Opposite end, but very cool to find someone else in Japan! :D 2y
wanderinglynn At some point, I want to visit Hokkaido. I have only been to Kyoto on the mainland. 2y
Kyndrill @wanderinglynn I hope you get a chance to! Let me know and I will show you around. There are still a lot of places I haven't been in Hokkaido, but I live in Otaru which has a lot of lovely touristy spots. The winters are horribly long, but anytime from May to October is nice! I went to Okinawa once and enjoyed it a lot. 2y

Reading at a cafe—for the first time in I don‘t know when! I deactivated both my Facebook and Instagram today, as a sort of experiment. I want to be free of them. I want the space to think my own thoughts… and space to read books. This one is delicious.

robinb Welcome to Litsy! 😊 I‘ve been thinking about deactivating as well. Would love to hear how it goes for you. 2y
llcoolnate they'll come a time when you don't miss them at all 👌🏻👌🏻 2y
Kyndrill @robinb Oops, I just realized I hadn‘t written my reply _to_ you—still figuring out how Litsy works! Anyway thank you so much! I will keep you posted! I am a little worried that people will wonder if I blocked them as I didn‘t announce anything before deactivating, but I am so far feeling an enjoyable peace I‘d been missing. I hope to get better at directly communicating with people again. 2y

Kyndrill @llcoolnate Oops, I just realized I hadn‘t properly written my reply _to_ you! Anyway, it is going well so far! The only thing I miss is some of the groups I used to look at. But I am enjoying the freedom / extra time enough not to want to go back😊 2y
BethM Welcome to the best spot on the internet! @Chrissyreadit has some helpful how to links in her bio. This place really is the greatest! 2y
Chrissyreadit @Kyndrill welcome to Litsy! The link in my bio has tutorials about litsy other littens put together and @LitsyEvents can help keep you up to date with activities open to everyone on litsy. I just realized yesterday almost 1/2 of my IG feed was advertising- so I will be limiting my use by a bit. I do not go on FB anymore except for a rare communication- it is freeing. Litsy is just a small reading community and has been exactly right for me. 2y
Chrissyreadit I hope you enjoy it here too! @BethM thanks for sharing the info ❤️ 2y
Kyndrill @BethM Thank you!!☺️ Everyone is so nice here! 2y
Kyndrill @Chrissyreadit Wow, thank you!! I will check out those tutorials. I followed @LitsyEvents too—what fun! Yeah I used to think that at least IG‘s ads are pretty pictures, but I just got tired of it. Litsy is pretty inspiring. I‘m not a fast reader, but this will help me to read more at least! 2y
Chrissyreadit @Kyndrill I can only say that my TBR is completely out of control due to litsy. 2y
Kyndrill @Chrissyreadit Oh my gosh mine will end up that way too😆 I‘ve already got a huge one on Goodreads, I‘d better move it over here! But for now I‘m hoping to read all the books I‘ve already bought but not read yet… 2y
BethM Once you start doing swaps and book clubs kiss you TBR goodbye :) though honestly it‘s been the best to I go to happen to me. Now I have a whole community of reader friends when I had none! 2y
Kyndrill @BethM Those look like so much fun😆 I‘m in Japan so unfortunately shipping costs a lot, but it seems people sometimes send snacks too? As long as they can get through customs I could send some pretty unique snacks🍫☺️ Or I could just participate during my next trip home to the States! 2y
BethM There‘s usually an international component as we have littens everywhere. I think someone is in Japan too actually. Or used to be at least. @maich is a lovely overseas litten do you remember who is in Japan? 2y
maich @BethM Not sure. I'm from Slovenia (Europe). 2y
maich @BethM @wanderinglynn aren't you from Japan? 2y
BethM See @maich figured you‘d remember bc you‘re a powerhouse international litten :) 2y
Kyndrill @BethM Thank you for checking for me. It would be so fun to find someone else in Japan! 2y
Kyndrill @maich Nice to meet you :) 2y
maich @BethM yes I am😂 2y
Nute I have a very tiny social media footprint, Corinna. It is pretty much only Litsy. That‘s okay with me because Litsy is preferred as it centers around my favorite pastime, reading. Everyone here is kind, thoughtful and considerate. The conversations start off about books, but many of them evolve into friendships. I‘m so excited to become acquainted with you.🤗 2y
Kyndrill @Nute Thank you so much! Seeing everyone's posts here is inspiring! I used to love reading but I feel like social media turned me into someone with a short attention span--well, giving it up actually has shown me I can still get absorbed in a good book. I'm so happy to finally get to books I've stocked up on :D I'm so happy to meet you, too😊 2y

Masks (Star Trek Next Generation 7) | John Vornholt, Vornholt
post image

My first Star Trek novel! At first I was thrown off by the omniscient third person point of view, a style I haven‘t read in a long time, but it worked for the ensemble cast. Occasionally the characterization was spot on, but sometimes it had me scratching my head, particularly how Data was constantly represented as having emotions. All in all, an amusing read with several fun twists.

StaceGhost Data always was more human than he gave himself credit for! When Tasha was killed he was sad about it— and that was early days! 2y
Kyndrill So true! Sometimes the whole “I cannot feel emotions” thing just doesn‘t seem right. Maybe he was always feeling them but just didn‘t know what they were. 2y
Nute I am a huge Star Trek fan, but only of the television shows. I have never considered reading the books. Are the books novelizations of the T.V. programs or are the television shows adapted from the books? 2y
Kyndrill @Nute They are novelizations based on the T.V. shows, but with different stories than any of the episodes. I grew up watching The Next Generation and remember my mom reading a lot of the books! So after finishing my re-watch of The Next Generation I decided I wanted to try some of the books. I have another two still to read which are a story about Q. Which is your favorite of the Star Trek T.V. series? 2y
