Love this book! I'm excited to book talk Tell Me Three Things this week. I know my contemporary realistic fiction readers will form a line for this cute, romantic, smile inducing read. Yes, slightly predictable, but sometimes we just need that in our lives too right?

A fan fave for many of my readers, I'm finally getting to Book 1 in the Lunar Chronicles. After the first 30 pages, I'm starting to believe in their Cinder-Kai obsession. We also use sentence examples from books during our writing workshop, so bonus: found some great examples for next week's lesson. 👍🏻

Leelee.reads Was excited to discover your profile just now. Teacher here, too, so always looking for other YA readers for perspectives on books for IR and curriculum 😀 8y

Been a few weeks, but that's what happens when school starts up. Also didn't help I fell into a book slump too! I know this book garners mixed reviews, but it's perfect for my readers who love jumping straight into the action. Lots of requests from my new readers for a book like that too; typically those who enjoy the post-apocalyptic storylines.

Thanks @JaimitaPR for posting about this book! Found it available on Overdrive, love it, and am now trying to figure out how to integrate it into my curriculum this year. Parables are awesome for flexing my readers' analytical skills.

Really enjoyed the fairy tale storytelling quality of this book. Seems like a standalone, which is great for my fantasy readers who get hooked on a book, but need to wait a year before the sequel. If I had a reader who loved this book, I might suggest Naomi Novik's Uprooted as a follow up. Will definitely check out Barnhill's The Witch's Boy soon.

Hey Litsy-verse. I need some help! My former partner teacher asked for some graphic novel recommendations for 9th graders with an identity/coming of age theme. I don't really follow graphic novels for use in my class, so I could only recommend this book, Lumberjanes, and Rollergirl. Got any other suggestions?

Work interfering w/reading life SUCKS, especially when you know the book you started is going to be AWESOME! Though I haven't gotten back to this since a week ago 😩, the first 30 pp hooked me. Every year, a village sacrifices the youngest child to a witch that lives in the forest. Seems like a clear cut good vs. evil plot, but things are not as straight forward as they seem. ❤️ it so much, it's not going into my classroom library till I'm done!😂

Every quarter, I challenge students to try something outside their favorite genre. For my readers who think fantasy (magical realism) isn't their thing, I'm going to throw this book at them, show them the book trailer, and gush endlessly in a book talk about why they must read this book. And when they finish, asking me for something similar, I'm throwing Gaiman's Neverwhere or Headley's Magonia their way too.

Since I just finished The Darkest Part of the Forest, sending out more love to Holly Black with my #augustphotochallenge. #faveauthorcollab is Holly Black and Cassandra Clare's Magisterium series. ❤️👍🏻💓 @TheSpinecrackersBookClub

Leave it to Holly Black to create a magical realism world that keeps readers on their toes. Just when you think you have everything figured out, she peels back another layer and suddenly everything isn't at all what you expected. If the first 30 pages are any indication, then I'm headed towards an eerie tale, with multiple twists, and I can't wait to share this with my readers.

My post-apocalyptic readers have another series to follow. They already love Laybourne's Monument 14 and Higson's Enemy series, and Hell Divers is an action filled first book I think they'll enjoy. Monsters weren't nearly as intense as Higson's Enemy series, but I could see that changing in future installments. No doubt that would thrill my post-apocalyptic readers while giving me nightmares at the same time. 🐓😳🙈

Post-apocalyptic books are huge amongst my readers. Saw the promos for this book and pre-ordered for my post-apocalyptic fans. After first 30 pages, I'm enjoying my first Sansbury Smith book. I need to admit though, I'm a big 🐓, so I'm hoping the monster aspect of this book isn't too intense!

Some historical fiction readers take issue when a writer strays from the "facts." Though Lee alters some facts from 1906 SF earthquake, as well as what her character could have achieved in that era, I still enjoyed this book. Love finding books with a diverse main character who won't conform to societal expectations, while also sharing what's beautiful about her culture. #mirrors&windows. Will recommend for fans of Heilig's Girl From Everywhere.

Finally started this today with the goal of getting to page 30 then blurbing; ended up reading to 71 without realizing it. So far, liking the resourceful Mercy Wong and enjoying the setting in 1906 San Francisco. Love this quote, "My parents never hit us, instead preferring the tried-and true technique of old-fashioned guilt." #mychildhood ?

Don't have access to most of my books since I'm still on break, so created a virtual collage of my #alltimefavebooks for the #augustphotochallenge. Tamora Pierce's Alanna was the book that hooked me as a reader. Unbeknownst to my teachers, I even used it for a book report two years in a row in elementary school. 😂

Mehso-so

My readers just getting into contemporary realistic fiction, fans of Van Draanen's Flipped or Nielsen's We Are All Made of Molecules, may enjoy this read. It's another cute story without the weight and heaviness of some CRF stories. Works as a transition into the genre. My more experienced readers in CRF, might take issue as I did because as far as believable characters go, I still couldn't reconcile Aubree's actions and thoughts with her age.

#day8 of the #augustphotochallenge brought me back to what would appear to be an unlikely candidate. A book about a girl who loses both parents in a car accident should have you in tears throughout; however, that's not the case here. With a diverse & quirky group of characters supporting an amazing young girl, I found I was laughing and smiling during this lovely read.

TheSpinecrackersBookClub Sounds like an interesting read. 8y

I keep hearing this book described as a cute romance; however, after the first 30 pages I'm almost ready to bail. I haven't even met the romantic interest yet, but I'm not clicking with the main character. Her decisions & reactions to events are frustrating to witness. I'm hoping for tremendous character growth. If it ends up being a read I don't like, then (fingers crossed) let it be one worth recommending to one of my readers who will.

I'm not sure if this is my #favebookishfriendship of all time, still it's the first to pop in my mind for #day7 of the #augustphotochallenge. Travis, Lydia, and Dill are outsiders in their small town, but their friendship allows them to embrace their uniqueness. This book though...let's just say when I finished reading it, I walked around my house hugging it because I loved it so much. Lol. 😍

I ❤️ superhero books. Powerless did not disappoint. Tons of action--beginning to end--to keep readers hooked. Quick read too. My readers who enjoy strong character development might be a little put off, but that makes an interesting point we will explore. Hoping sequel lives up to the first, so I can add this to other series (Laybourne's Monument 14 or Barnes' The Naturals) I suggest to my readers who need a fast-paced, action-filled books read.

For #day5 #augustphotochallenge, I couldn't resist and had to post Kwame Alexander's The Crossover. Once this book was added to my classroom library, I had a waitlist of 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. Yes, it's about basketball, but it's just as much about family and coming of age too. So good!

My school year begins soon. I'll have a new crop of 7th graders who call themselves non-readers. The comment I always see on my beginning of the year survey: reading is boring. For those students, I look for a book that immediately draws a reader into the action, showing them reading is far from boring. After 30 pages, Powerless could be one of those books. Only thing better than introducing a good book to a nonreader, introducing a good series.

I finished the last page and released a sigh of contentment. 😊 Glad I kept reading on. Stokes addresses an important question my YA readers enjoy exploring: How do you continue after a devastating tragedy? My readers who've enjoyed Schneider's Beginning of Everything or Condie's Summerlost will enjoy this book too, but so will fans of Stone's Every Last Word. Might seem like odd pairings, but somehow it all makes sense around Stokes' Universe.

Last year, my readers went crazy over Jenny Han's To All the Boys and The Summer I Turned Pretty series, so of course I jumped on this book being billed as perfect for Han fans. After the first 30 pages, I'm not quite there yet: that place where I know my readers are when they think of Lara Jean or Belly. Still, I'm reading on especially knowing my temptation to dive into a Harry Potter book marathon right now could be clouding my judgement. 😂

Teaching rising 7th graders this summer was a good reminder that many of my readers, at the start of the new year, are so young! Some just aren't ready for the full force of YA. After the first 30 pp, I'm hopeful this middle level book has potential to speak to my younger & older fantasy readers.

The first 30 pages acquaint readers with three major perspectives: the two hopeful enchanters and their mentors, as well as the reigning royal family. Skye includes just enough to establish a secret magical world, while also leaving you with intriguing questions to keep you reading. I'm reading on!

TheFirst30 I'm excited! My fantasy readers, obviously those who especially ❤️ Bardugo's Grishaverse, will enjoy this magical world. But, my readers who ❤️ alternate history--Graudin's Wolf by Wolf--or my contemporary realistic fiction fans (they love a good triangle) will also ❤ this! Yay 4 cross-genre appeal! 8y

Highly Illogical Behavior | John Corey Whaley
post image

After the first 30 pages, I had to read on to page 48 before deciding to continue. Whaley uses tons of inner thinking to reveal his characters, and sometimes that style makes the reading slow moving for me. Still, I'm intrigued by the premise, and hoping this could be a good addition to our library.

TheFirst30 I'm always looking for books that show the humanity behind those who struggle with mental health. Highly Illogical Behavior will be a go to in my library for readers who've had characters, like Finch in All the Bright Places and Adam in Unlikely Hero of Room 13B, pull at their heart. 8y

Jumping into the Litsy world with Joe Schreiber's Con Academy! I always tell my students to at least read the first 30 pages before making any judgements about a book--abandon or read on. After the first 30 of Con Academy, I'm definitely reading on.

TheFirst30 Really enjoyed this! I'm definitely recommending to my readers who are fans of teenage masterminds and heist books like Kurt Dinan's Don't Get Caught, E. Lockhart's Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks, and Josh Lieb's I Am a Genius of Unspeakable Evil. 8y
