This is my book! It‘s a collection of humor pieces and essays about my 20-year teaching career, which spans teaching preK to college (I teach at Pitt now). Starting this one! I‘m trying to read a book a day (or close to it!) for my fall break this week. I read the New York Magazine piece this is based on a while back and was enthralled!

I really enjoyed this memoir through essays! Philpott has a great way with one-liners but she‘s a sharp and honest observer of herself and others too. Recommended!

Love me some books about...books! Can‘t wait to dig into these - three days of classes left at Pitt!

Halfway through a re-read of my favorite Pym & enjoying it so much, again, I may just make this a Pym Spring!

Reading this one for my Readings in Contemporary European Novels class at Pitt. The other 4 novels were familiar to me, but this one was chosen because the author is visiting campus next month. I like it so far! Author is from Lisbon; this is a translation.

So excited to read these two from my editorial sisters (the same lovely editor acquired our books)! The one on the left is out April 2nd!

I love this book so much. This is the fourth or fifth time I‘ve taught it at Pitt!

Terrible. Wildly implausible, poorly paced, difficult to follow, and badly translated. Just a huge disappointment. I‘m so bummed I assigned it to my class.

My friend & colleague Irina Reyn‘s new novel was released today! It‘s so wonderful, a really compelling read about Russia & the US, told thru the story of Nadia, a Russian immigrant trying to reunite with her young daughter. I loved it!

Eh. A rare case of finding the TV show/movie better. The writing is well-paced & I really enjoy its sparseness. But the warmth & humor of the show were missed. Villanelle *only* has sex and kills people which got repetitive at first, and then wearying by the end. And the book doesn‘t have a conclusion, which I loathe.

A slow build, with some deliberate attempts to keep strong emotion at bay. It works for the protagonist and main subject matter. I‘m grateful for having read it though it was at times hard.

So excited to read this one! Loved “Killing Eve.”

“Ships at a distance have every man‘s wish on board.” Oh, delighted to sink back into Zora Neale Hurston‘s masterpiece again!
