Earlier this month I read the first 4 stories in this collection and just didn't finish. Maybe next year I'll read for more. The title story, Perchance to Dream was good, but the other three were just OK. They feel a bit formulaic, so it's prongs built good to not read them all in one sitting.

Pickpick

The October #ThatsClassic pick. Some of the book feels repetitive, but still a good early gothic horror. Perhaps it's knowledge of how it all pans out, but it didn't feel very suspenseful. As others mentioned before, it's not exactly a female friendly world we're viewing but that's how women were regarded in the 1890s. Thanks for the push to reread it 25 years later @Annie1215

Pickpick

The overall story was good with a strong ending, but I have 2 gripes. 1. Niki is deaf (yay disability inclusivity) but since she's excellent at reading lips, there is zero sign language and it's super easy for her to follow along with group conversations. 2. Her boyfriend Terry calls her Funny Face, which isn't weird on it's own, but considering her always calls her that, especially in serious situations, grated my nerves. Good for 2 hours of fun.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 3y

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @jb72 I probably read some when I was younger but sadly I don't remember. This is my first in recent memory. I did order a newer one that just didn't get read this month. I'm curious to see if there's a huge difference in style. YA seems to be a totally different ballgame the last 10-15 years. 3y

Lisey's Story: A Novel | Stephen Book

Panpan

Mare Winningham's audio narration was FANTASTIC but I'm glad this smucking book is over! Listening to Lisey's Story for 19 hours on CD over the last two weeks means I had a lot of time to think about this. It was too long. Parts of this book felt unimportant to the ultimate story and others were repetitive to the point where I was hoping for some clown to emerge from the sewer in an unexpected crossover to take out every last one of them. ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Lisey is boring. Her sisters are boring. Zero scares, and the most thrilling part was a scene with a can opener! And worst of all, there were so many words and phrases that are like inside jokes/family phrases that are supposed to take you into their specific story but really just grated my nerves into a parmesan-like substance. Among the grating are smucking (in lieu of it's rhyming F word), bool (still couldn't 100% explain WTF it is), ⬇️ 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick parents referred to as Goodma & Dandy, and most annoying, is this famous writer can't call the blanket an afghan, but an African. The only vaguely supernatural thing about this is the place Lisey's husband has taken her at times, a bit like The Upside-Down of you're a Stranger Things fan, called Booya Moon. I'm just not sentimental enough for this sort of self-indulgent story. At least there are beaucoup team points for this one. ⬇️ 4y
