Austen_meets_Annie Good opening line: "Time wore on, and spring matured. The surface of England began to look pleasant: her fields grew green, her hills fresh, her gardens blooming; but at heart she was no better." 1d

Austen_meets_Annie "He wondered (he remarked parenthetically) what noodle first made it the fashion to teach women French. Nothing was more improper for them. It was like feeding a rickety child on chalk and water gruel." & "Having but an indifferent opinion of women, he always suspected them. He thought they needed constant watching.??? 1d
Bklover As Fanny helps Caroline dress to go visit the “old maids” I find myself wondering about Fanny‘s life. Does she have a life of her own at all? She seems so insignificant. Also, having met the men in this novel, Caroline should consider herself lucky that she isn‘t forced to be married to one of those assholes. Oh, and @Austen_meets_Annie - “they needed constant watching” just about put me over the edge!” 1d
lil1inblue It's so crazy that Caroline is considering resigning herself to be an old maid at 18. 😬 I know times were different and all, but it's still crazy. 1d
Austen_meets_Annie @Bklover so much misogyny this chapter. Is Shirley going to show up and save the day????? 1d
dabbe I think my favorite hashtag thus far is #countdowntoshirley 🤣😍🤣 1d
willaful @dabbe Agreed! I think we were told they come in in the next chapter? I was so tempted to read on! 1d
Bookwormjillk Ladies don‘t be learning French 1d
Clare-Dragonfly @Bklover I keep wondering about the servants too, in this and in so many other 19th-century novels. I suppose the people who had the leisure to write were not people who had ever had to do servant work. The only servant I can think of who is a full character is in Ruth by Elizabeth Gaskell. (I‘m embarrassed to say I can‘t remember her name and annoyed that she isn‘t listed in the Wikipedia article.) 24h
Clare-Dragonfly @lil1inblue I‘m chalking it up to typical teenage drama—one man doesn‘t love her, therefore none will! At least, I hope that‘s the case 😅 24h
Bklover @Clare-Dragonfly l need to read Ruth - I know we read it last year but for some reason I didn‘t do that one. I did buy it though! 22h
mcctrish Ugh, this was depressing #countdowntoanything 21h
dabbe @mcctrish #nownewfavoritehashtag 🤣😍🤣 20h
ElizaMarie I agree! @bklover being an old maid might be favorable than marrying one of these horrible men! 10h
