2ond to last for #14Books14Weeks2023 and a #RememberingJenny pick as well. I recall Jenny‘s high praise on her podcast. This book blew me away. I often dislike novels told from multiple perspectives but this one was amazingly good. And it‘s a debut ?!?! 🤯 Teenagers Mae and Edie are sent to NYC to stay with their estranged father they‘ve not seen since childhood. Their mother is in a mental hospital. The story is raw, complicated and triggering.

I read this months ago for #rememberingjenny, and I loved it. It‘s quiet and slow and thoughtful, almost a meditation on a friendship between two couples. The characters felt so true to life—at times thoroughly familiar but also so often unknowable, in the same way it‘s so difficult to completely know even those we are closest to. Such a lovely book.

Ruthiella I really enjoyed this book too. I don‘t remember Jenny specifically talking about it, but the she read so much! I got so many recommendations from her and the podcast. 💔 (edited) 2y
Centique I‘m sorry I didn‘t notice this post until now! I know this was one of Jenny‘s favourite books and I read it because of her recommendation too. The writing is just so beautiful and it really carried me away as well as giving me a lot to think about 💕 1y

Space Invaders: A Novel | Nona Fernndez

Pickpick

A firm pick.

I flipped straight back to the start to start reading again. This is a tiny novella, just 80pp, a group of schoolfriends growing up in Pinochet‘s Chile, remember the girl who disappeared from their lives, through dreams/nightmares and letters.

The dedication/acknowledgements bit.

And with this one I‘m #RememberingJenny, who read this for WITmonth 3 years back, and was a huge influence in me reading books from around the world.

squirrelbrain Wow, that‘s some recommendation, if you immediately started again! 2y
rockpools @squirrelbrain It‘s dreamlike - you could almost start and end it anywhere - so going back to the start you immediately see the overlapping threads. Also, it‘s VERY short, and I wasn‘t done with it yet!! 😊 2y
TrishB Great post ❤️ 2y
Centique Sorry I‘m late to notice you‘re #rememberingjenny I just started listening to an old podcast of hers today. Made me pretty tearful and had to stop. I hope I can listen to them again sometime though 😢 This book sounds really good 2y

Book two of #awesomeaugust and read for #rememberingjenny

Be advised that the bibliography for this book has the potential to make your TBR list even more out of control.

kspenmoll It totally will add to your TBR…happened to me! 2y

This book has been sitting on my TBR shelves for years. I realized that it would work for a challenge and that the audio was also available from Libby. Thus, I am using the audio + book method to quicken the process. It is my first Erik Larsen read. When I checked Goodreads, I saw that it was also Jenny Colvin‘s first Larsen. I am dedicating this read to her. #rememberingjenny

tyoung2058 I've heard if this but haven't picked it up yet 2y
marleed I learn so much from Erik Lawson! 2y
DivineDiana @tyoung2058 Although I know the outcome, this book does an incredible job of filling in details of the time and place. 2y
DivineDiana @marleed His extensive research is apparent! 2y

The rain is clearing up but I‘m still reading by the fire. I finished my last book so I thought I‘d pick this one up since I planned to read it for #RememberingJenny.

Thank you @TrishB for gifting me this book 🥰A really enjoyable debut. Evie might just be the Baddest Girl on the Planet or….maybe not!!! Born & raised on a small island off the coast of NC Evie can‘t shake her HS reputation or the fact that Mike Tyson was once her claim to fame. Super fun read😍 This was a five star read from Jenny Colvin @ReadingEnvy #RememberingJenny #CoverCrush

Cinfhen I‘m 99.99% sure you would LOVE this book @KarenUK 😘😘 2y
TrishB Great review 👍🏻 glad you enjoyed it. 2y

Love Medicine: A Novel | Louise Erdrich
post image
Pickpick

This was Erdrich‘s 1984 debut, a novel in stories and it put her on the literary map. Full of heart and pathos and featuring the lives, loves, and trials of the extended Kashpaw, Pillager, Nanapush and Lamartine families on and around Chippewa reservation in N. Dakota.

#RememberingJenny In 2020 Jenny took part in the Erdrich Medicine Readalong on Instagram. I spent many happy hours in the Reading Envy pub and thought of her while reading this.

Leftcoastzen I remember loving this book ! It still hurts & shocks me about Jenny. I had no real or online connection other than enjoying her podcast & admiration for her support of books, writers, & readers . (edited) 2y
Ruthiella @Leftcoastzen I still miss her as well. She was such a thoughtful person and I admired her ability to read so much and so widely. 2y
BkClubCare @Ruthiella @Leftcoastzen - I am still a bit in shock, to be quite honest. 2y

This is my #JubilantJuly stack while I try to keep cool 🥵. I‘ve got The Midcoast on my kindle at 30% read. The two #PemberLitten titles, Excellent Women and The Completing of the Watsons I‘ll finish this weekend. Next week is super stressful with work and other unfun stuff. But I‘d like to at least get a few chapters into Our Wives Under the Sea for #CampLitsy and Love Medicine for #Roll100 and #RememberingJenny. ❤️

Andrew65 Best of luck 😊👍 2y
Centique Gosh I hope you like Love Medicine. I loved it 😍 have you read any others? There‘s a bunch of them that feature the same families so you get to know more about them. 2y
Ruthiella @Centique I‘ve only read Erdrich‘s more recent work. I‘m excited to start at the start and work my way forward! 😀 2y
BkClubCare @Ruthiella - how fun! 2y
