The Library Book | Susan Orlean

I‘ve been working in libraries (in Children‘s services) for 10+ years. I‘ve been super-conflicted about going for my MLIS. It has nothing to do with not liking school (I‘m a big nerd 🤓), or being unsure about my career path (I love what I do), or not wanting to put in the effort. It has *everything* to do with debt. My current job offers tuition reimbursement but I‘m actively job-searching.

I‘ve decided to apply for Summer Admission.😱Excelsior!

emtobiasz Good luck, and congrats on taking that first step! The debt fear is real. But I love the opportunities that have opened up to me since getting my MLIS, and already having that library background will really help in your classes. 5y

Zelma Congrats on the decision! Smart on thinking about debt though, and planning to avoid or reduce it. I don‘t regret my career choice but I certainly regret the path I took to get there. My librarian salary does make up for my grad school debt. 5y

monalyisha @emtobiasz Thanks! I‘m nervous about adding to my undergrad debt. Still, I‘ve been searching for a job without it for the last ten years. I know what‘s available to me without it & I know I‘m not satisfied. I want more intellectual & creative freedom & independence. I want a FT job that doesn‘t necessitate an hour commute. I want to supervise my goddamn self. 😆 I know I‘m good at what I do. I deserve to DO it & be adequately paid for it. 💪🏻 5y

monalyisha @Zelma Yeah. Honestly, if I could find a full-time Children‘s Assistant job in Rhode Island without it, I don‘t know that I would get it. But a decade‘s shown me that it‘s not happening. I‘m... resigned that I need it? Is that horrible? I think that‘s horrible but also just true & where we‘re at right now. I‘m tempted to keep waiting for things to change but I‘m also just so sick of waiting. 5y

Zelma @monalyisha all of your reasons in your last post sound like you are making absolutely the right decision. I have a friend going through the same decision after working in a library for 15-20 years. She is secure in your job but also wants to make it stays that way and had options in the future. It sound like a degree with really get you in a better place and give you more options. 5y

Zelma @monalyisha oh, and I have had a few friends ask about getting a degree and want feedback. I always advise not to do it unless you already work in a library or are on track to. In your case, I would definitely have supported it. 👍 5y

I‘ve had a lot of coworkers/supervisors tell me to do it, but rarely have they expressed any doubt or hesitation & it always feels a bit like...OF COURSE they have to say that it‘s worth it. They‘ve already done it. They have to reconfirm that *they* made the right decision. So, it‘s nice to hear “Do it!” & “Yikes, though! I know!” in the same breath. 5y

802Librarian If you are choosing between similar programs, choose the cheaper one. Nobody has ever cared where I got my degree, just that I have one. Also check with your state library association, they may offer grants or have partnered with a program to offer a discount on tuition. It does sometimes take a while to be worth it. I got my degree in 2009, but it only paid off job/money-wise in 2014. 5y

802Librarian Being a Director means I have the intellectual and creative freedom plus independence you want, but it also means being responsible and accountable for every single that happens in the library as well as being a presence in my small community. It‘s mostly amazing, but can be very draining and sometimes isolating. 5y

monalyisha @NHLibrarian I admire your drive! I certainly don‘t have directorial ambitions. Honestly, part of why I‘ve been on the fence is that I don‘t really have any desire to oversee other employees. I‘m like that little girl in her car seat: I wish I could just do everything myself (#perfectionist) & not supervise anyone else, either. Clearly, those aren‘t realistic expectations but it‘s okay to dream sometimes! 😅 5y

802Librarian @monalyisha I‘ll tell you something my favorite trustee told me never to tell anyone: I never wanted to be a director or work with the public 😆. I fell into this because I was unemployed when the previous director retired. Nobody was more surprised than me to learn that I actually like it. But I would also never be director of a bigger library because now I also still get to do day-to-day library work. 5y

CocoReads I‘m not a perfectionist per se, but I also hate to let anyone see my writing. That‘s more of an insecurity thing for me though. @CrowCAH writes too! 6y

GingerAntics @CocoReads I actually started writing at the encouragement of an amazing teacher and then passed them around for the whole class to read. It was the weirdest team sport ever. lol Then a bad teacher turned me off writing for years, and now I don‘t like showing my work to anyone anymore. I‘m with you on that one. 6y

I had a ton of books in my wishlist through my digital library only to discover that 1/3 of them are no longer available because my state didn't repurchase those titles. This was my face when I discovered how many books I won't be able to read now.
