A terrible storm off a remote Norwegian island, in 1621, kills all of the menfolk in one village, leaving the women to fend for themselves at the same time as they are caught up in witch trials.

You really feel the sense of isolation and menace in this book, I couldn‘t put it down. My only (small) gripe would be that I want to know what happened to the two MCs afterwards, but that could have been a whole other book!

Cathythoughts Great review! Stacked. I‘m in Norway just now too , but with a Detective 🕵️‍♂️ Wisting in The Katharina Code 👍🏻 13h
TrishB And a gorgeous looking book! 13h
squirrelbrain I was going to do a ‘Nordic noir‘ type book for Norway too @Cathythoughts, but then this one popped up! 13h

This has been a rough book to read. Getting to know several if the victims all while knowing what their fate would be... the authors detailed descriptions of the massacre... but I'd held my emotions in check until this part. It gutted me! I'm not sure yet what will happen to Anders... this is really a #subjectnewtome ... but I am hoping for so many bad things. Ugh!

Nothing like starting a good old Nordic detective series. Detective Frank Frølich is a very likeable character. It reads well as a stand alone despite being number 7 in the original Norwegian version.

My second read of this (yes I already read it once, but see I want to reread them before I tackle book six, which I have not read) had me enraptured.

Before I really liked it, but now... Wow. The sections I thought were dull before—I loved them this time! The game changer is that now I consider everything he writes in context of the scale of the whole series, and it makes the accomplishment so much more impressive. I‘m blown away really.

“You loved Wallander, now meet Wisting “
Could it be true. ???!!! 🙏. Nothing has ever compared to Henning Mankell for me.
🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻Here it goes ... I‘ll give it a try

eanderson I seriously need to start this series... I have the first book, of course, but still haven‘t picked it up. 🤭 2d
TrishB 🤞🏻🤞🏻 2d
Cathythoughts @eanderson yes this one is the start of The Cold Case Quartet. There‘s also an early stack starting with Dreggs ... I‘m excited to see what they will be like 👍🏻❤️ 2d

I have 70 pages left in The Mercies and I left it at home! I‘m devastated.

I think I‘ll be ok with these two. But arg!!! I‘m on the edge of my seat heading for a book hangover. It‘s not even out yet so I can buy it when I land.

It‘s a #mustread for anyone who like Circe or song of Achilles.

I really loved this beautiful, terrifying little book! It's an amazing description of the landscape and wildlife of Svalbard, as well as a superbly creepy tale of the effects of the Arctic winter on the human psyche. It's also, as the subtitle says, an excellent ghost story! The atmosphere and growing sense of unease linger in your mind as you read, and long afterwards. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
