The Greenlanders
The Greenlanders | Jane Smiley
11 posts | 4 read | 6 to read
This enthralling epic tale, written in the tradition of the old Norse sagas, takes us to fourteenth-century Greenlanda farflung place of glittering fjords, blasting winds, sun-warmed meadows, and high, dark mountains. This is the story of one family: proud landowner Asgeir Gunnarsson; his daughter Margret, whose willful independence leads her into passionate adultery and exile; and his son Gunnar, whose quest for knowledge is at the compelling center of this unforgettable book. Jane Smiley immerses us in this world of farmers, priests, and lawspeakers, of hunts and feasts and long-standing feuds, and by an act of literary magic, makes a remote time, place, and people not only real but dear to us.

Bailedbailed

I really wanted to get into this and finish it, but I have other books to read. And to be honest, I want a sweeping generational tale and this is too much of names and things happening without any real relationships between characters.

Okay, time to tackle more of this one.

For the #13inthree readathon I only managed to get about 11 hours of reading in, but I did finish two books.

Okay Littens, I need your advice. I picked up a copy of Freedom by Johnathan Franzen three(?) years ago because it was mentioned on Parks and Rec. I have not read it yet and I‘ve only heard uncomfortable things about Franzen ever since (misogyny, sexism, etc). Is it worth reading or should I save my reading time for something else?

ladyonequestion Read it, because you already own it and I think that if we didn't read authors because they hold problematic opinions, we might not read some good books. If you start it and end up bailing then at least you tried. Disclaimer: I have not read it and I don't have any strong feelings about Franzen. 6y

I‘m really proud of myself for getting through The Darkest Minds so I won‘t be late returning it to the library.
