Pickpick

It took me two months to finish this and oh my, what a ride this was. But: I've defeated the beast. 😂 It's hard to talk about the plot without giving too much away so I'm just going to say: Be prepared for suffering some major mind-blowing confusion and super-creepy moments. With this you will question what is real and what is not. And you'll find solutions - maybe, if the 'house' lets you. 😉 #litsyreadsleaves #conqueringthebeast

IMASLOWREADER omg i just bought this book too...waiting for it in the mail 🤗🤗🤗 7y
Sweettartlaura I had NO idea what I was getting into when I got this. But ten years (or more?) later, I am still glad I read it. Congrats! It really is an accomplishment. 7y
Nuwanda Yay! I'm glad you enjoyed it, and congrats on slaying the beast! 7y

Godmotherx5 Great review. 7y
andreadmw I am intrigued... 7y
kricheal How long is this book? I'm so curious now? I've had this on my tbr list for awhile but I've never bothered to look at how long it is (not that it matters anyway?). I keep seeing it come up on almost every "scariest reads" lists, so I added it to my goodreads tbr. 7y
scripturient @kricheal I left it in the office so I can't check but I think it's about 700 pages in total or so. There are some pages with only one word and others that are covered in writing (including footnotes, margin notes, etc.). You definitely need some time for this. 😊 7y
kricheal Ooooh this might need to be bumped to the top of my list 7y
saresmoore I just picked up a copy of this yesterday. It's my choice for "Freezer-worthy horror" in the #LitsyReadingChallenge . By your description, it sounds like it might actually end up in my freezer! 7y
SoniaC I really loved reading this book. It is so well done. 7y
Reviewsbylola I gave up on this one. I just couldn't do it. 7y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled My hair practically turned grey from reading this. I was afraid of my own bathroom for like 3 weeks. But I love love loved it. One of my favorites. 7y
TheLondonBookworm Hehe I'm going to start using conquering the beast for all my epic marathon books ☺️☺️ love it!! 7y
Devlindusty There are sequels out for House Of Leaves three huge ones the familiar-one rainy day in may, the familiar 2-into the forest and the familiar 3-honeysuckle and pain the man is a perplexing writer but so so good and the sequels are almost 1000 pages long each can you imagine 7y

Not sure if reading this is actually what you'd call a break from work but ... oh well. 😂 #litsyreadsleaves

JonathanDunne Why? Is it heavy going? 7y
scripturient @JonathanDunne It is quite a postmodern experience. Mirrored script, footnotes all over the place, parallel stories, questions of authenticity, upside down writing,... 😊 7y
JonathanDunne Oh... 7y

Ashley_Nicoletto I tried to read this and couldn't because of the way it's written. It is difficult to get through. 7y
DeborahSmall @JonathanDunne I haven't looked through it again since first buying it online. A headache waiting to happen. @scripturient good luck 😉 7y
scripturient @DeborahSmall @Ashley_Nicoletto Thanks. I've started it a while ago and am already on pages 400 and something so I'm making progress. 😃 7y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I love this book because it's kenetoc towards the end - your heart begins to race and you start frantically flipping pages. Such a fun experience 7y
Karkar I loved this book. It was a bit of work to read due to all the different writing but it was worth it to me. 📚 7y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled That's kenetic, I mean!! 7y
SoniaC lol I think it counts. Great choice. 7y

I'm making progress. 💪🏻😊#litsyreadsleaves #GiveaScaryBook

SoniaC What do you think of it so far? 7y
scripturient @SoniaC I like it. It's totally crazy and creepy and makes you question your own perception of things but it's fun. :) How is your reading of Infinite Jest coming along? Have you finished it? That would be my next 'quest'. :) 7y
SoniaC @scripturient I did finish it. Sheer stubbornness got me through it. I found it really frustrating but I did it! I really enjoyed House of Leaves it's definitely crazy and creepy you're so right about that. 7y

scripturient @SoniaC 👍🏻🙌🏻 7y
Vinjii I will pick this one up as soon as I've stubborned myself through Infinite Jest 😞 7y
SoniaC @Vinjii I feel your pain. I think that book gave me PTSD! 7y
Nuwanda Woo! You've got this! 7y
Tcip I finished it in about a week. This book totally captivated me! 7y
JessicaThunstromNelson Some of us never finish this book. We might read every page countless times, but it lives forever inside us. 7y

I'm beginning to believe I can actually conquer the beast. 😁 #litsyreadsleaves

Imagineannie Just got it and planning an attempt soon. Will follow your progress with great interest. 8y
Nuwanda You've got this. You're into some of the quicker, more action-packed parts now! 8y
Redwritinghood I just ordered a copy. Going to give it a try. 8y

LauraBrook You can do it! Plus, if I'm remembering correctly, there are dozens of pages coming up with hardly any text on them, so it's like speed reading! 8y
scripturient @Imagineannie @Redwritinghood Yay! Be prepared for lots of weirdness. :) @Nuwanda Can't wait. I want to know what the heck is going on in that house! @LauraBrook Only some, most of them I already read. But yes, it gave me some feeling of getting on with the story. 😂 8y
elamm I read it... I think 15 years ago? I loved it. 8y

I wanted so much to love this. Creepy in parts, but I didn't really get fully spooked. Intrigued by the structure and how it plays with the story, but it didn't work for me.

Godmotherx5 Still on my shelf. Hope it's worth my time. 8y
OhNoMersault This is his best. The formatting really works for this one. 50 year sword tries but fails to find reason for similar style and format. 8y
Beetle I probably loved the experience of reading this more than the actual story. 8y
See All 9 Comments
Nuwanda @OhNoMersault I like the signiconic (Danielewski's term for his style) style in The Familiar as well, but I agree this is his best--the labyrinth of the text matching the labyrinth of the house, and the multiple, sometimes eerily parallel, authors reflecting the questioned veracity/authorship of the Navidson Record. 8y
kristinshafel I agree, though I listed it as a pick. I think if I had a job right now (just moved to Asia, lots of free time at the moment) I would have bailed. This one takes time commitment and effort. I admit to skimming some of the footnotes and more "textbooky" chapters. 8y
CuriousG Agreed. I love how it played with a different structure, and so many other things, but it just didn't spook me in the way I was hoping it would 8y
Chrys I really enjoyed reading it for the structure, but the story itself didn't frighten me at all. And I did put it down for long periods and then pick it back up 8y
OceanCityMama Yeah, the story might have been creepy if it was easier to get absorbed in. But the structure was distracting. I didn't have the attention span for it, even though I fully respect how cool and unique it is. 8y
kristinshafel I wish I had known this before I read it, but MZD's sister is the singer Poe, and she put out an album based on this book the same day the book was released. I'll have to find a time to listen to it. 8y

I've done ridiculously badly this month at both #booktober and #litsyreadsleaves and am ashamed of myself :( so to try and get myself back into the groove I got this book (the cover is the one I got, it's by Peter Engel) from #netgalley and it's bringing back memories! Sorry for the absence you lovely Litsy peeps!

kedupre This is the only book in my life that I've ever had to put down... because I was having too many nightmares. It's freaking terrifying. 😮 8y
cariashley I need scarier books for this month!! Just started The Winter People but not sure it's going to do it. I have We Have Always Lived in the Castle on deck. Might have to pick this one up tomorrow!! 8y

BrooklynBookGirl After reading listen to the song "Drive" by Poe. She's the authors sister, and the author does a reading from the book. Kinda cool 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled LOVE this book. It will make you afraid of your own bathroom. 8y

With an audiobook of 'Salem's Lot by Stephen King and a hard copy of this, the textiest of texts, I am all ready for for #scaretober! So excited for this postmodern horror story (and I'm not talking about that critical theory course I took in college). #litsyreadsleaves

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Loved this book. At one point there are a few meaures of music printed on a page - I went to my piano, plunked out the notes, and screamed. Ha! This book is awesome. 8y

The footnotes in this one are driving me insane. 🙃😜😂 #litsyreadsleaves #scaretober #ghostsoflitsy

kammartinez The footnotes drove me mildly bonkers as well, since they are pretty much one entire story running concurrent with the main text. Hope you can keep pushing through the weirdness :D. 8y
Foxyfictionista This was one of the reasons this book frustrated me. 8y
BeththeBookDragon I've quit books because of footnotes before. I've heard good things about this one, but that makes me nervous... 8y

itsbrb This book is going to take me months to finish and I'm finally okay with it. It requires so much concentration that some days I'm not willing to give. On page 100 now. 8y
Kirstin Don't think of them as footnotes, just a part of the weird layout. I had so much fun reading this. Also, I love your bookmark! 😊 8y
Nuwanda There are lots of little, for lack of a better term, clues in the footnotes as well. Some are very well hidden, but there are some interesting connections to be made among the Navidson Record, Johnny Truant's notes, and a lot of the back-of-the-book material. 8y
Owlizabeth I tried to read this from the library and totally ran out of time. I'm gonna have to buy it, I think. 8y
silverlocusts One does not read HoL as much as one becomes enveloped in it. Think of it as a game or a puzzle. Or a really complex Choose Your Own Adventure. It is worth the work, I assure you. Good luck! 8y
