Livraria Lello, Portugal‘s most famous bookstore, publishes its own editions of classical books. They are gorgeous. I bought this one, a poetry collection by the iconic Portuguese author Fernando Pessoa.

Mehso-so

Although this book became a bit of a struggle to finish, I‘m giving it a so-so because there were aspects I enjoyed. I felt it gave a good sense of Lisbon, Portugal in 1936. I was originally intrigued by the character of Ricardo Reis, a pen name of real author Fernando Pessoa whose ghost is also a character in this story. However, I came to detest Ricardo Reis for his treatment of Lydia, and the ending was unsatisfactory after all those pages.

I‘m continuing to make my way through this book a few pages at a time and have made it to 60%. Reading with supper made it a bit more enjoyable tonight. I‘m still not a fan of the incredibly long paragraphs and dialogue without punctuation. I feel bad for Lydia and like Ricardo Reis less and less as the story goes on.

Mommamanzi All I know is I want to come to your house for supper. That looks yum! 2y
Daisey @Mommamanzi It was delicious, and I have plenty of leftovers for this week! 2y
BarbaraBB I‘ve been dreading this one. 2y
Daisey @BarbaraBB I finished it, but by the end I was just pushing through. 2y
BarbaraBB That‘s exactly what I‘ve been afraid of. Kudos for finishing! 2y

I‘m slowly making my way through this book. I did a bit of outside reading about Ricardo Reis & Fernando Pessoa, which has helped somewhat. So far, this quote has been the most interesting to me, and I think it makes a good point.

This book has some really interesting points but I found it really hard to pick it up once I put it down .

Ladygodiva7 I‘m not looking forward to this book either 😳 2y
Daisey I‘m still only about 30% through. It‘s a slow read, and my appreciation has decreased. I‘m hoping that changes a bit again. 2y
BookwormM @Daisey keep at it you can do this 2y
