I‘m not usually a fan of childhood memoir, but I enjoyed this look back at Saramago‘s young years. Around 100 years ago in Portugal is so different from my own experience, and he tells vignettes, giving an overall impression rather than a straightforward recounting. His writing is just so good that I was carried along.
Crime story set in Portugal, but it‘s not the usual holiday-read. A great set of inspectors (one autistic) and a good and clever storyline.
The writing style wasn't as captivating and engaging as I expected it to be, rather contrived. The story was quite compelling and enlightening. The premise was very interesting, but the execution wasn't fictional enough :)
Library today to get books and a state park pass, then to read at the state beach 15 minutes away. 😎
Does your state loan out state park passes? I love this program!
I‘m still considering all of my feelings about this book, but man is it bleak. One day out of the blue an epidemic of white blindness strikes every person in a large city except one and we witness the collapse of society as we know it. The author makes some unique choices—none of the characters are named and the text is presented in block form with no quotations. It definitely requires a deeper analysis—what is the blindness supposed to represent?
Took a punt that a graphic novel called “Portugal“ might contain the word #Portugese, and I was right! #WickedWords @AsYouWish
Am I enjoying it? Not really. Angsty artist dude treats woman terribly because angst, travels to find himself.
Also, Lettering Hall of Shame, gold star edition.

¡Wow! Esas últimas 50 páginas me debilitaron.
“La esperanza de vivir siempre y el temor de no morir nunca.”
