A wonderful book for kids and grown ups which explains the meaning of the cross with simple language and expressive pictures. We love it and read it every year around Easter!

Gioconda Belli was recently stripped of her Nicaraguan citizenship along with 93 others. I don't think it was president Ortega's intention to remind me that this novel of hers was on my TBR, but it did, and now hopefully you can add it to yours and we can increase the readership of authors who resist their fascist governments. The novel is about Adam and Eve: Belli has fun showing us what a world without history looks like from their vantage.

Billypar If anyone doing the #ReadingtheAmericas2023 challenge still needs one from Nicaragua, I recommend giving this a try. 12mo
Leftcoastzen Sounds amazing 12mo
Billypar @Leftcoastzen Yeah, it's a pretty creative riff on one of the most famous stories ever. 12mo

Currey @Billypar I have her autobiography on my TBR shelf. Thx for the prompt to get to it 12mo
Billypar @Currey I'd like read that one - it sounds like she's lived an interesting life to say the least. I think The Inhabited Woman was inspired by her experiences with the revolution in Nicaragua. 12mo
Suet624 All of this post is so informative! Ortega removing citizenships? This author? I have some reading to do. 11mo
Billypar @Suet624 I didn't know much about denaturalization before I heard of this story. Pretty terrible practice! 11mo

Draw Me a Star | Eric Carle

Pickpick

Ranked the 64th most challenged book between 2010-2019, as reported to the American Library Association.

The artist in this story draws a variety of celestial objects, humans, and animals. What is truly heartwarming is the ode to Carle‘s grandmother‘s trick of drawing a star, which is introduced in the story. I adore Carle‘s illustrations and was surprised I had yet to read this. So glad I did! Letter D #BBRC #PictureBook

Bookwomble I hesitate to ask, but what could possibly be objectionable about an Eric Carle book? 2y
Librarybelle @Bookwomble This was challenged because the first drawing of the humans has them appear nude. You cannot tell anything from the drawing itself, except that they are not wearing clothes. 2y
Bookwomble @Librarybelle 🤦‍♂️🙄 Unbelievable! (Sadly, too believable) 2y

Librarybelle @Bookwomble I know, right??? 2y
Bookwomble @Librarybelle Funny that the same extreme conservatives don't also want to ban the Bible, which definitely has two naked people in the first chapter 🤨 2y
LibrarianRyan Yeah. This is why I loved banned books discussions! 2y
