Northanger Abbey | Nancy Butler

This was a fun graphic novel of Northanger Abbey.

Mid-month check in. Read any good Northanger Abbey retellings? Anything you've hated?

An odd format, described as a novel but containing much biography and thoughts on the life of a writer. Thoroughly enjoyable mostly but the literary critical segments sometimes get a little convoluted. Definite pick though.

This book was a ton of fun!

Many years ago (like when I was 12 or 13) I read one of the author‘s other books, Bergdorf Blondes, and remember enjoying it. It‘s no surprise that I loved this one!

This book is like Crazy Rich Asians but with rich Brits in the English countryside. I am a sucker for books about rich people.

The Black Prince | Iris Murdoch

Murdoch is for me an acquired taste and only to be enjoyed in measure. She‘s impossible to read quickly.

This is farce set in late sixties London, Bradley Pearson is a retired civil servant and unsuccessful novelist. Told from his POV, which is questionable, it‘s what happens when instead of writing his magnum opus, his life falls apart, with no little help from his own ineptitude, jealousy, and solipsism. Wickedly funny at times and quite dark.

BarbaraBB I loved this one!! 3w
Ruthiella @BarbaraBB It was a #blameitonLitsy read because of you! 3w
CarolynM My favourite of the Murdochs I‘ve read. I love those alternative perspectives at the end😊 3w

Ruthiella @CarolynM The letters at the end are interesting (if contradictory! 😂). My favorite Murdoch (so far) is 3w
sarahbarnes I already have this one stacked! I haven‘t read anything by her yet. 3w
Ruthiella @sarahbarnes She‘s a great writer, but definitely I can only read her a little at a time. Next I want to read 3w

mcctrish I don‘t even know what to think at this point - Maggie won‘t marry Stephen because of Lucy, she can‘t be with Philip because of Tom and his lines in the sand so she will be alone ? There are probably more fish in the sea but we are running out of chapters 4w
Bookwormjillk Maggie doesn‘t seem to have any good options and now everyone will blame her for Stephen‘s assery. 4w

dabbe Yep, Maggie gets to go back and face the music while Stephen literally can ride off into the sunset. Damn what these women had to go through in the 1800s! 4w
Leftcoastzen Oh man ! Poor Maggie! Few choices to begin with and now this ! 4w
Leftcoastzen Too all ! Enjoying the read along and all the great comments! 4w
ElizaMarie @dabbe Yes! The 1800s were so brutal for a young woman. She is screwed, Stephen is an ass, he doesn't care about her reputation, and practually blackmails her into marriage for the “sake“ of her reputation - ugh! I hate boys! I feel bad for Maggie. Worried this book will end and she won't find happiness. 4w

Clare-Dragonfly I would like to give Stephen a smack! I don‘t know what options Maggie has now. Someone saw her and Stephen together who knows them 😨 (I‘m guessing and hoping Ben!) She can‘t even get a decent teaching situation if they hear she‘s been alone with a man. 4w
kwmg40 What a chapter! Poor Maggie. 4w
Clare-Dragonfly (Bob, not Ben. I don‘t know if there‘s even a Ben in this book 😂) 4w

Bookwormjillk @dabbe 😂

And how could Stephen screw this up so bad that they got there in like an hour but now it will take 2 days to get back. Maggie is cooked for sure.

KAO This can‘t go well!! 4w
Clare-Dragonfly He kidnapped her!!! THIS IS NOT OKAY. 4w
Clare-Dragonfly I think it would ruin Maggie‘s reputation if they don‘t get married. So he‘s pretty much forced her hand at this point. 4w
Leftcoastzen Uh oh ! Not fair! 4w
ElizaMarie @Clare-Dragonfly I agree - I don't like this Stephen guy. He feels so entitled to do whatever, consenquences be damned. He claims to care for her, but then he puts her in a lot of situations a young lady shouldn't be in. AND doesn't listen when she tells him to stop/leave her alone. 4w
