3.5/5⭐ Oppel created a complex animal world with its own interesting mythology and factions. The adventure and danger felt real and had high stakes. It was an entertaining read, but not enough that I want to finish the series (especially after skimming summaries of the remaining books; the story seems to go in a very strange direction). #roll100

A surprisingly dark and deep meditation on death, while still being a fun adventure. I was surprised it was still left with an open ending, and kinda back to square one story-wise. I feel like it'd be a stretch to continue the same hero/villain dynamic, if he writes another one, but if not, a disappointing ending to their conflict. Still, it has been a great series, and the follow-up prequel sounds interesting!

I didn‘t get as much done as I hoped but it was still fun. Photo is from bat cookies at Bake at 350 (storing recipe away for next year) https://www.bakeat350.net/2019/10/cutest-hairy-bat-cookies.html?m=1

Thanks to everyone for following along or tolerating my batty posts for #batweek. I was at a dinner party in Colorado, and when I brought up bats, the host casually mentioned killing dozens of them because they would roast in his porch, and he didn't like it. Their unearned reputation as pests, dirty, or just scary can have devastating effects on the ecosystems they support. You don't have to love them, but don't hate them. ♥️🦇🖤

rachelsbrittain I love bats! I don't want to get too close to them because of rabies, but they're so cool and absolutely important as pollinators and part of the ecosystem! I made a marionette of a fruit bad for a 3rd grade project on animals because I thought they were so cool. 6mo
julesG Bats are cool! They are under special protection in Germany. I never even thought of them as pests. 6mo
Deblovestoread Andrew, honestly bats scare me. But I appreciate the roll they play and just try to be inside when they are swooping outside. Thanks for all the interesting info. 💜 6mo
Clwojick I love bats! When we moved into our new house, we immediately took down all the bird houses the previous owner had left, but the bat house is one of my prized possessions! 🖤 I‘ve only seen one come out of it, but I just love it. 🦇🦇🦇 5mo

Don't you just want to pinch those cheeks?! ? While mega bats like the flying fox are the most "sky puppy"-ish, there are over 1,400 species of bats, which accounts for 20% of all mammal species! They can be found nearly everywhere on earth, aside from the harshest desert or artic. And they are the only mammals capable of true flight (nice try, "gliding" squirrels). #batweek

CBee I love bats! We get them here at dusk and I love watching them swoop around 🦇 6mo
Amiable “CBS Sunday Morning” had a segment about bats on yesterday‘s show! 6mo
TheLudicReader Your bat posts crack me up and by that I mean 😬. My son loves bats and always wants me to admit that they are cute...which they decidedly are not. 6mo

Clare-Dragonfly Wow, 20%! I wonder why there are so many? Benefits of flight, perhaps? 6mo
bthegood love these posts (and love the “nice try -gliding squirrels“) - 🦇 6mo
TieDyeDude @Cbee We need to set up some yard furniture. I'm not sure how many are around here in AK. 6mo
TieDyeDude @amiable Thanks, I'll look for it on YouTube. I love CBS Sunday Morning! 6mo
TieDyeDude @thelucidreader At least your son has good taste! 😅 J/K. Thanks for reading anyway! 6mo
TieDyeDude @clare-dragonfly I think a lot of it is just the evolutionary adaptations for all the different environments and diets. Some species are wide ranging (little brown bats can be found throughout North America), but many are specific to fairly small regions (Bumblebee bats are found only among limestone caves along the Thailand-Myanmar border). That's why habitat destruction of even a small area could put a whole species in danger of extinction. 6mo
TieDyeDude @bthegood Thanks 😅 6mo
CBee @TieDyeDude I think they‘re out more in warmer weather as I haven‘t seen them recently. They‘re super fun to watch when I can! 6mo

How do bats spend so much energy gripping with their feet while hibernating? They don't! The tendons of their feet have evolved to lock their toes in a grip, and they actually have to flex to release from their roost. This allowed their leg bones to evolve thin and light to eliminate some weight as they gained flight. Their legs now would not support their weight if they tried standing. #batweek

Like humans, bats only have one or two offspring each year, which increases their susceptibility to major colony damage from disease like white-nose syndrome or habitat loss. Recovery can be very slow. More than 200 bat species around the world are considered threatened. WNS alone has the potential to wipe out 90% of a colony in one winter. #batweek

SamAnne Loving your bat posts. Lost our colony of bats next to my house due to a shitty illegal development. It‘s been so sad. Really missed them whizzing past my head this summer while sitting on my porch. Such amazing beings. 6mo
TieDyeDude @samanne Thank you! Sorry to hear about your local colony. A group I follow is fighting constantly to have even legal development show consideration towards local bat populations. 6mo
SamAnne @TieDyeDude I‘m interested in what noticeable cascading effects we see? More mosquitos? We‘ve also seen far reduced butterflies, pollinators and dragonflies, not sure the cause of all of it—climate change weather for sure, habitat loss. We have a full lot with fruit trees, plants, vegetable gardens, native flowers, no pesticides or herbicides. I‘m really missing my bats and bugs. 6mo

Bat Week Day 2: Some bats have butt spoons they use to catch insects mid-flight, then they do crunches like a gym bro to pop the bug into their mouth. Bats can't glide (that's one way to tell them from birds while flying), so all this is done while flapping. #batweek

bthegood omg - thank you - I am enjoying these bat lessons - I have two bat houses up and while in Texas watched the bats at Camden Street Bridge (tens of thousands come out at dusk) - 🦇 6mo
TieDyeDude @Clare-Dragonfly I hadn't heard it before, and I love it 😂 6mo
