Hello new #BakerStreetIrregulars - unfortunately @CatLass007 and I have decided to end our group after our April discussion - yes, we are still in our infancy but unfortunately I had to consider all of my groups and commitments on Litsy and in life and some things I‘m unable to give the attention they deserve. Thanks to those who have joined us on what we thought was a fun delve into the many mysteries that are out there.

Librarybelle Thanks for hosting this! I know I just joined up, but it‘ll be fun to discuss this month‘s book with you and @CatLass007 ! 1d
CatLass007 Thanks, @Librarybelle! It‘s a good idea. All the buddy reads are good ideas. There are just so many, something‘s gotta give. I‘m going to continue exploring the topics on my own as time and finances permit. I‘ll miss the discussions, but I know that Littens are so supportive of one another that discussions will continue informally. 1d

CogsOfEncouragement I‘m really enjoying this first Amelia Peabody story. I had NEVER HEARD of the series. So I thank you for making me aware. I appreciate you making hard decisions about stepping away from good things in order to properly enjoy other good things. Good example to all of us. 💟 1d
Read4life I‘m sorry to see this end but I‘m struggling with all of the buddy read groups I‘m in and I don‘t even run any of them. Thank you both for the time you put into this. 💙💙 1d
julieclair Thank you both, @StayCurious and @CatLass007 , for hosting this very fun group. I often feel like a kid in a candy store with Litsy. There are too many fun things to choose from! But we can‘t do everything, and sometimes real life needs our attention. I applaud your search for balance. 💙 1d
CatLass007 @CogsOfEncouragement @Read4life @julieclair I‘m glad you‘ve enjoyed #BakerStreetIrregulars. I was dimly aware of the Amelia Peabody series but didn‘t know much at all. I‘m enjoying the first book in the series and I‘m happy to share that the first dozen books in the series are free on Audible. I agree that being a Litten is very much like being a kid in a candy store! My Audible wish list is miles long because of Litsy. 1d
TheAromaofBooks Thank you both so much for hosting - I totally get it on the overcommitments! 😂 @CatLass007 23h
CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks Thank you for hosting your buddy reads. Because of Litsy I‘ve gotten to meet many wonderful people. Was your handle once @barkingmadruns? (edited) 23h
TheAromaofBooks @CatLass007 - No, I've always been TheAromaofBooks Perhaps you're thinking of @BarkingMadRead , who is still active? 23h
CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks Wow. I really shouldn‘t try to think and/or write anything unless I‘m fully awake. That is exactly who I meant and since your handles are nothing alike, the only possible explanation is that I was sleep typing.😅 22h
BarkingMadRead @CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks 🤣🤣🤣😴😴😴 22h
TheAromaofBooks @CatLass007 - haha no worries, BEEN THERE 😂 21h

I re-read this to decide if I could read it on stream. I cannot. It's not just that this book is BAD. That's fine; my chat would have a great time with a bad book. No, it's that it's incredibly, irretrievably RACIST. Some books I quietly remove the slurs so we can read them but in this, the plot is fundamentally racist. There's no way to “fix“ it to not be so deeply harmful. So I'm not going to read it for an audience.

Librarybelle I think this one was well constructed, had a sinister feel, and was a good overall mystery. 5d
IndoorDame I loved it!!!!! But can you train snakes? And assuming you can, aren‘t there easier, less dangerous, ways to kill pesky family members or their unwanted fiancée‘s? 5d
CrystalE02 I loved it!!!! I found it very interesting. 5d

Daisey This is one of my favorites of the short stories. 5d
dabbe @IndoorDame Good question! I know people do the cobra-dancing thing, but I don't know that the cobras are truly trained (since quite a few get bitten and even die in the process)--plus, snakes aren't mammals, and milk is like poison to them. 5d
dabbe I'm willing to suspend my disbelief for an excellent detective story, however, if you have time for dying words, Julia, maybe you should avoid metaphors: “Oh, my God! Helen! It was the band! The speckled band!“ is nice and all, but in that same amount of time you could have said, “I was bitten by a damn snake! Here's the wound!“ Roylott would then have been in jail long ago. Just sayin'. 😀 I know--it might have been too quick to totally see. 😂 5d
IndoorDame @dabbe you‘re so right! That was especially cryptic for last words 😂😂😂 5d
kelli7990 I enjoyed this story. 5d
CogsOfEncouragement A snake behaving this way is pretty crazy, but I suppose if an author invents a snake, an author can decide how it behaves and what it needs to survive. lol
I enjoyed this entertaining short story.

dabbe @CogsOfEncouragement That sounds like a great game, too: Invent-a-Snake! 🤩 4d
Aimeesue Look, ACD, I‘ve HAD a pet snake and Jeffery did NOT drink milk. He was cute when he drank out of his water bowl though. He was not about to obey commands either. Maybe I could‘ve left him a trail of crickets leading up to my intended victim, I guess. Even then, it‘d be iffy. And he wouldn‘t have come back, that‘s for sure. 🐍 4d

IndoorDame Sherlock was WRONG! I mean only for a second, and mostly to teach us a lesson about jumping to conclusions, but still, for a second there he was WRONG! This guy is good! 5d
Librarybelle I was going to say the same thing, @IndoorDame ! 5d
CrystalE02 I agree with @IndoorDame 5d
dabbe And not only is Roylott a match intellectually, but physically as well. I think Holmes is a bit intimidated by Roylott (even though his words are witty, and he hides it well)--proven by the fact that he has to bend the poker back to show he's equal to Roylott in physicality as well as mental abilities. 5d
CogsOfEncouragement Roylott gets away with the first murder for years. Roylott isn't so secure in his genius when Holmes is brought in to the mix though. He tries to physically intimidate him, but that just makes him more of a suspect. I was impressed by the poker being bent, but then Holmes straightened it and I realized it wasn't the brag Roylott thought it was. 4d

IndoorDame The country house mystery is definitely my favorite, and this one had an especially sinister vibe… sketchy family history, renovations, mostly empty, evil stepdad type, townsfolk who keep far away, useless stuff, cheetah roaming around… 5d
Librarybelle I‘m a big fan of the country mystery setting - it seems more isolated, and it‘s really easy to build up the isolation aspect and the suspenseful feel behind that. Also…the wild animals on the ground! Just wow…the country setting is perfect for the cheetah and the baboon to hide. 5d
Cuilin Country house? Yes. Quasi locked room? Also yes. The setting was perfect. 5d

CrystalE02 The setting was perfect!!! I loved the country setting. 5d
dabbe @Cuilin Am I right in thinking this is the first SH locked-room mystery? Or would “The Red-Headed League“ fit that bill a little, too? 🤔 5d
Cuilin @dabbe oh good question though neither are probably true locked room mysteries. 5d
kelli7990 The setting was perfect for this story. 5d
CogsOfEncouragement The sisters should have been able to enjoy walks together on the grounds, instead they were on guard for wild animals their stepfather imported. What an unnecessary danger to the whole community. Having so much of the house unused was creepy to me too. I would have been begging my aunt to take me in long ago! lol 4d

IndoorDame That‘s so funny, it is so far! But I seriously thought it was just because I enjoy going back and thinking more about the ones I know the best and this one is super familiar. If it‘s everyone‘s fave I‘m gonna have to do some serious thinking about why! 5d
Librarybelle I‘m not sure I can really say it‘s my favorite - I don‘t think I have a favorite at the moment - but this one felt more sinister and suspenseful to me than the others so far. I really like that about this story. 5d
CatLass007 I don‘t know if it‘s my favorite but it certainly is the most straightforward mystery. All of the clues were presented to the reader at the same time as Holmes learned about them. I was able to reach the conclusion that a poisonous snake was involved, even though I didn‘t know the exact breed of snake. So maybe it is my favorite SH story so far, because nothing was hidden from the reader. 5d

Cuilin I loved it!! It reminded me of a Jonathan Creek episode. 5d
CrystalE02 I enjoyed it. I don't think it is my favorite Sherlock Holmes story. 5d
dabbe I agree with all of you. I'm going to have to read the whole canon again before I decide which short story truly is my favorite. Up until now, it's been in my top five, but not my #1. We'll see if that changes! 🤩 5d
Bookwomble @CatLass007 The exact species of snake mentioned in the story doesn't exist in nature, so it's forgiveable that you didn't know it 🐍😊 5d
dabbe @Bookwomble So true. And many critics have tried to figure out exactly what snake Conan Doyle was talking about. Just like playing the Sherlockian game, I guess. 🤩 5d
kelli7990 I enjoyed this story but I don‘t really have a favorite story so far. 5d
CogsOfEncouragement I don't know if I have a favorite. So hard to choose. I can see how the swift justice is appealing though. 4d
Aimeesue @Cuilin Jonathan Creek! Yes! 😂 4d
Cuilin @Aimeesue So glad somebody got that reference. While a lot of mysteries focus on the who (done it)? or why? Sherlock and Creek seem to focus on the how, which I like. 4d
dabbe @Cuilin Another series I have on the TBW! 🤩 4d

I have read, & loved, a few of Simenon's romans durs but this is my first experience with Maigret outside of a couple stories. It opens with Maigret shadowing a suspicious traveler who ends up committing suicide after having their suitcase switched, by Maigret himself no less. I really liked this propulsive suspense story that went to some really dark places. I will not be reading all of the Maigret books, but I will def be returning to them!

vivastory Have you read this one @bookwomble 1w
BarbaraBB Maigret… that brings back memories. It doesn‘t feel outdated? 1w
Bookwomble I haven't read this one. Although I had a Maigret binge last year, there are still loads I haven't got to yet! Sounds like a good one 😊 @BarbaraBB Obviously, I can't speak to this specific novel, but I haven't found the other books particularly dated, just atmospheric. By contrast, I've tried a couple of Christie's and thought them almost unreadably dated #UnpopularOpinion 1w

Cathythoughts I read Hatters Ghost and really enjoyed it. I must try the Maigret series. Where would I start with Maigret? I love the suspenseful stories. 1w
Bookwomble @Cathythoughts The stories are all standalone, so I wouldn't worry too much about where you start. I just went with what the library had in and it was fine. I did find it took me a few books to get to know Maigret - he's a private man, but Simenon gradually builds up a fascinating portrait. If I was accused of a crime (I didn't commit!), of all the fictional detectives I've read, it's Maigret I'd want investigating. 1w
Cathythoughts @Bookwomble 😂 Well if Maigret would be your detective that says it all. I must get moving on these books ❤️👍🏻 1w
Bookwomble @Cathythoughts I do love #SherlockHolmes but he's about the intellectual challenge, solving the puzzle, and the game of pitting his wits against an antagonist (all fun to read), whereas Maigret is interested in the lives of both victim and preparator, and it's his compassion for both that is often the key to his success. He's got a strong moral centre, too, and is implacable when he sees thugishness or cruelty. Please forgive the fanboying! 😄 1w
Cathythoughts @Bookwomble I love the fanboying and your description is excellent… I think that‘s exactly why I will like Maigret too 1w
LeahBergen I need to try a Maigret, too! 1w
vivastory @BarbaraBB I didn't find it to be outdated. Simenon writes in an almost clinical, detached manner with very little emotional investment quickly moving from point to point. I was often reminded of Highsmith's Ripley novels while reading, or some of Hitchcock's early movies.. I do think that the Ripley novels are slightly better in terms of characterization, but this was a great time & I LOVE Simenon's romans durs (esp Dirty Snow) 1w
vivastory @Bookwomble Care to share favorites from your Simenon binge? 😀 1w
vivastory @Cathythoughts What I did was go to my local bookstore, grab all of the Simenon Maigret novels, read the synopsis & buy the one that intrigued me the most. I know that there are a few guides online of the best in the series, but I get the general impression that you can't go too wrong with what you choose. (edited) 1w
vivastory @LeahBergen I think you'd like him! A quick read. I polished it off in a couple of hours! 1w
Cathythoughts Oh good ! I‘ll just pick one so. Maybe this tagged one 👍🏻❤️ 1w
Bookwomble @vivastory lt's hard to pick, so I'll mention three that are a bit different. Mainly they take place in Paris, and while "Maigret Takes a Room" does too, the setting is unusual and shows another side of the city and the man. Maigret comes from Normandy and a few of the stories see him back there: "The Misty Harbour" is a good one of those."Maigret Travels" sees him amongst the millionaires, travelling from the Côte d'Azure to Switzerland, and ⬇️ 6d
Bookwomble @vivastory ... getting very uncomfortable. Horse you enjoy whatever you pick up 😊. 6d
