This was sweet, and sad, and haunting, and wonderful to hold in your hands. Half graphic novel & half diary-form story, half in the past, half in the present, it moves quickly & takes you mostly where you expect to go, with a small surprise or two along the way. I confess there were a few points where I expected something different, but I found it all very satisfying in the end. A fun read on Halloween day!

I‘ve also neglected to post my #Screamathon reads!!
I‘ve read all of these qualifying Screamathon reads in October 🎃☠️🎃💀👻🎃
(Plus the 13 Ghosts, received as part of #screamathonswap that I did manage to post about 😜)

alisiakae Did you like The Little Book of Halloween? That's one I meant to get to this month, but didn't. 4y
Avanders @4thhouseontheleft I did! It is so pretty, but it was a little more witchcraft (ie the actual craft) and history focused, and a little less whimsical, crafty, fun focused than I was expecting. I‘m sure that‘s 100% my bad for not reading “backs of books” though. 😁😁 4y
BethM Fun! I really liked The Silence. 4y
Avanders @BethM me too! I definitely prefer it to the movie too (which I watched after reading the book 😁) 4y

I picked this up as the boarding school setting pulls me in and I‘m pleased it did not disappoint. I enjoyed it very much, a murder mystery entwines with a supernatural element which is quite spooky. Great sense of place, kept me turning the pages, and a satisfying conclusion.

A slow burn read with an escalating sense of foreboding, and clever twists. The story is scary enough but I‘m not a fan of the writing (or narrative?). Without giving away anything, I‘ll just say I like it but didn‘t love it.

BarbaraBB Yes I had a but of a problem with the writing too. I did like the plot though. 4y

Good story with a well executed plot. In the vain of Octavia Butler. Loved the character of Binti just wish a little more development. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Dark Tales | Shirley Jackson

This is a fine collection of stories by an author who has great talent in making the mundane unnerving, nightmarish, unsettling. Some make me gasped, others make me wondered at their ambiguity..still, the best of her collection I‘ve read so far, and in quoting Dorothy Parker.. “Shirley Jackson is unparalleled as a leader in the field of beautifully written, quiet, cumulative shudders.”

Addison_Reads Great minds think alike. I was just posting this one too. 😁 5y
Zoes_Human As I just shared with Addison_Reads on their post:

When I was little my dad would read this with me, and when it was time to turn that last page, the one with bricks, he could never get it turned until I grabbed hold of his arm and pulled real hard too. 💕

Penance | Kanae Minato

Pickpick

Haunted by the murder of their childhood friend 15 yrs ago, 4 young women tell their stories in each chapter, narrating how the incident affected their lives & revealing the ‘penance‘ they‘ve performed. There‘s a narrative by the victim‘s mother, disclosing her backstory which eventually ties everything together. Penance is a dark story about revenge, grief, guilt, & the psychological trauma effect. An engaging story, well translated. #Screamathon

So I forgot to keep my #ScreamathonReadingChallenge #Screamathon posted! So this month sadly I've only read the first 2 Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark books, and I've been working on Death by Dumplings as well as a collection of stories called Video Nasties! @4thhouseontheleft
