Didn‘t see this in the database, but it‘s available for free on Audible with my membership, so I thought why not give it a listen. Indeed, some of the best known poems are included, but there were also some I hadn‘t heard/read before. I‘m not a huge poetry girl but this was enjoyable!

Bailedbailed

I don‘t think I‘ve ever bailed on so many books as this month. This is another one that started out great (a woman looking for her two granddaughters who went missing after their mother was murdered). Unfortunately it turned into a mix of dystopia, fantasy, and magical realism 😵‍💫
It was an audioread and maybe my English isn‘t good enough but I completely lost track of the storyline and frankly, I didn‘t bother, I just wanted it to be over.

Caroline2 It‘s CampLitsy syndrome. 😂 I‘m so excited about all the new books to look forward to that I‘m struggling to concentrate on my current reads. 1d
BookWrym All the things you don‘t like make me want to read this 🤣 1d

BarbaraBB @Caroline2 That could very well be it 🤣🤣 1d
BarbaraBB @BookWrym I know! I like all those genres too but this mashup was too much for me. But it‘s probably me, the book won the Canada Reads! (edited) 1d
Susanita Sometimes too much is TOO MUCH. 1d
squirrelbrain Definitely sounds too much! 1d
Suzze I started reading it because it was set in Detroit (where I live) and it won this year‘s Canada Reads (we get CBC tv here). I started it three months ago and am only 11% in. It never calls me. 1d
BarbaraBB @Suzze It has all the ingredients to be fantastic and I know many people do think it is so it is probably my/our state of mind 😀 1d
BennettBookworm I set a personal goal this year to DNF any books that weren‘t keeping my interest… and so far I have DNF‘d a LOT! 23h

Glad I finally got around to this book! It‘s delightful, slightly heartbreaking, but ultimately hopeful. A fantastic story of non-conformity. And bonus, the audiobook is read by the late, great (but never forgotten) John Ritter! I so want to see the Disney+ adaptation now too.

How am I the first to post about this book while it‘s on the #WomenPrize longlist??
Anyhow, it deserves to be there. It‘s a powerful read. Cilla leaves her homeland Grenada to make money in the UK. She leaves her son Raef behind and it takes 7 years before she can afford his ticket and for him to reunite with his family. Things don‘t go well however and Cilla blames herself. Told by mother and son alternately the book packs a punch.

squirrelbrain Oops, must have forgotten to post when I read it! 🤪 It sounds like you liked it better than me - I felt it was a bit long in places. 2w
Leniverse It's the cover. It's putting everyone off 🤪😆 2w

BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain It‘s long indeed but it felt like a fast paced one to me. 2w
BarbaraBB @Leniverse That is absolutely true!! I dreaded reading it too! Don‘t let it put you off though! 2w
Leniverse It's one of only three longlist books that I haven't been able to get through the libraries or on a kindle deal, so I've been leaving them for last in case an offer turns up. But of the three I feel the least drawn to this one so I'm glad to hear you liked it! 2w
Gissy Great! It‘s in my Amazon shopping cart. I will order it then today🤗I‘m buying them online because I only found one book from the list in one of my local bookstores and I don‘t like to read digital 🤷🏽‍♀️ 2w
BarbaraBB @Gissy Me neither! I buy them online or get them in the library. Sometimes I do audio but I prefer holding a real book in my hands 🥰 2w
sarahbarnes Very good to know you liked this one! 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures I have it waiting! I had to buy it so I am racing through my library loans and some of the shorter ones first. So glad to hear that you liked it and found it worthy. 2w

I don‘t ever really read self-help, but this book has low-key been on my radar since it‘s publication, because who doesn‘t want to be badass? 😂 There were 2 or 3 chapters that resonated with me, and the author approached the whole book with humor, which I always appreciate. My biggest take from it was to always LOVE YOURSELF! It‘s really the first step to badassery!

I‘ve listened to this book while driving or when I couldn‘t sleep and enjoyed the short stories of two women who work as editors for daily talkshows. There‘s a lot to do at the moment about the atmosphere behind the scenes of those productions, think #metoo, sexism, long hours, unfair employment contracts etc. The authors write about their experiences with wit and humor. Without getting sarcastic they nail the subject.

CarolynM Sound interesting. And another lovely photo😍 4w

This was totally a #blameitonlitsy read! I saw all the love this book was getting so I had to see for myself what all the fuss was about, even though I‘m not much of a fantasy girl. I‘m glad I gave in to the hype because it was a total delight! The world-building was good, Viv is a great MC, and all the supporting characters are endearing.
