Day 6 - #makeyourvotecount

Election Day reminds me of my political career:
I was a write-in candidate in 1998 for borough council in my home town. Here I am teaching voters how to write-in my name. I won the election with 180 write-in votes and beat my opponent who was on the ballot by 10 votes. I went on and won elections in 2001 and 2005. I served a total of 12 years. I also became the first woman borough council President in my borough.

vkois88 That's such a cool and important job! 9mo
EadieB @vkois88 I got involved because of the dishonest people involved. I went door to door and eventually got rid of the ones who were not following the law and then got honest people elected. I called it ‘educating the voter.‘ (edited) 9mo
OrangeMooseReads That is awesome 👍🏼 9mo

EadieB @OrangeMooseReads I worked for the taxpayers and nobody got favors. Some people were not too happy because they thought they were special and wanted their own way. (edited) 9mo
OrangeMooseReads @EadieB that‘s the way all in public office should be. 9mo
EadieB @OrangeMooseReads Sad to say it is not the reality. Politicians lie and then the voter gets confused and ends up not knowing who to vote for. I found that very frustrating! (edited) 9mo
OrangeMooseReads @EadieB I know. It is sad that politicians are mostly in it for themselves and don‘t care about the people they work for. 9mo
ravenlee Good on you! 9mo
EadieB @ravenlee Thanks! In the beginning I was offered positions on the council if I voted along with them and I told them that I don‘t need a position, I have my own mind and I never listened to my dad and why would I listen to them. @OrangeMooseReads (edited) 9mo
arubabookwoman Good for you! Very grateful for people like you in politics. 9mo
EadieB @arubabookwoman It was not easy to go against their dishonest policies and finally had to leave because my husband and I made a pact to quit everything we were doing and concentrate on our lives as people don‘t always appreciate what you do. He had a hard time when they would lie about me in the newspapers in order to get rid of me so they could continue their dishonest ways. (edited) 9mo
arubabookwoman That's awful, and I'm sorry you had to go through that. The lies and dishonest attacks (instead of facts and real issues) may be why many good people choose not to go into politics. 9mo
EadieB @arubabookwoman I‘m sure it is. I went to the newspaper and told them to check their facts before they print the letters they received about me. I told them the guy who wrote the lies was campaigning in their paper in order to gain my seat and that they were printing lies in order to sell newspapers. They said that they would not print anymore of his letters. Politics is such a dirty business. (edited) 9mo

Okay maybe I didn‘t vote today, but I voted on the first day of early voting! 😜 I am anxiously waiting the results. Trying not to get my hopes up, but I am crossing my fingers and toes that Beto will be my new senator! #FallIntoReading #MakeYourVoteCount

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks 👍🏻👍🏻 9mo
hermyknee Me too 🙌🏽 Dallas county is already projected blue and that‘s my county! C‘mon, Beto! 9mo

MatchlessMarie @hermyknee 💙 Bexar county here. We usually vote blue too but it‘s the rest of the state I‘m worried about 😅 9mo
hermyknee 😳 I know. This is giving me so much anxiety. 9mo
REPollock Ted Cruz is such a repugnant piece of shit. 🤞for Beto! 9mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage I can‘t believe that they are soooo close. 🤞🏻🤞🏻 9mo

vkois88 I feel sick just watching overall election coverage. There is definite stress eating going on 9mo
MatchlessMarie Finally catching up on my Litsy mentions. Oof. 6 more years of Grandpa Munster. Thanks for the commiseration y‘all. @hermyknee @REPollock @BarbaraTheBibliophage @vkois88 @BookNerd9906 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks 8mo

Andrew65 @CarolynM @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Have to always remember the work people had to put in and the extents they had to go to, to get what they should have always had. Don‘t know about America or Australia just wish there were better options to vote for! Last election it felt like there was no viable option. 9mo
CarolynM Yes, it is hard to be enthusiastic about any of them but there are some I despise more than others😂Still, what decent person would put themselves forward in the political world these days? Why would you do it to yourself or your family? 9mo
Andrew65 @CarolynM Love the strategy. Let‘s vote for the one we despise least! 😂😂 9mo

I early voted and will be glued to the tv/phone/computer tonight. So nerve-wracking. I canvassed last night to try and ensure people vote against a ballot measure here that would amend our state constitution to say there is no right to an abortion with no exceptions. The tagged book is my Election Day reading. #makeyourvotecount #resist #persist #fallintoreading

Cathythoughts I never watch telly ... but I‘m glued for the night ... 9mo
RestlessFickleBookHoarder And I'm such a ball of anxiety and I can't face the news. I voted but I'm going to do escapist TV and reading tonight. 9mo
Blaire @RestlessFickleBookHoarder your way would be better for my self-care but I‘m like @Cathythoughts I watch it all and am a total political junkie for the nitty gritty precinct level analysis. 🤞 for good results. 9mo

Lcsmcat Same here! We‘ve got 6, count ‘em, SIX constitutional amendments on our ballot that are total power grabs. 😡 9mo
Leftcoastzen It was busy in my state Az, but did you hear 3 hour lines in Atlanta?😡 (edited) 9mo
vkois88 Appropriate book, for sure. This whole thing has me feeling like throwing up. Definite stress eating happening here 9mo
Blaire @Lcsmcat ugh! So infuriating. The anti-choice amendment won here 52-48. Last night was a mixed bag for me. A good win for mayor in my city - so that was a highlight. 9mo
Blaire @Leftcoastzen infuriating. Kemp is a master at voter suppression. 9mo
Blaire @vkois88 yes, I went full on into my kids‘ Halloween candy stash. 🤣🤣🤣 9mo
Lcsmcat @Blaire As you say, Ugh! 2 of the 3 most egregious amendments failed but the voter ID (which the courts have thrown out twice) passed. But we broke the supermajority in the state legislature so, some wins, some losses. 9mo
RestlessFickleBookHoarder @Blaire antichoice and 10 commandments on display both won here. *sob* 9mo

Got up, went out and voted how I wanted to, not Granddad, not Mama, not the father in law. Totally me, and it felt good to do that one small thing. Too often we do what others want us to, today is not that day. #GoVote #MakeYourVoteCount

BookishMarginalia Not a small thing — voting is a huge thing! 🗽🗽🗽 9mo

The nail-biting climax of one of the greatest political victories in American history: the down and dirty campaign to get the last state to ratify the 19th amendment, granting women the right to vote.

This one is a Goodreads 2018 Nominee ❤️
