Milkman | Anna Burns

This book is slowly growing on me. The above quotes are just a small sample of how Burns sets the tone of a community where what you say, what is said about you, and what you hear, control your actions and the actions of others. 🤭🤫

emilyhaldi Wow those are some meandering sentences!!! 😅 6y
Kalalalatja @emilyhaldi YES! It really takes some getting used to 😄 6y

Everything Under | Daisy Johnson

Pickpick

In this mythical, poetic novel, Johnson pieces together fragments of a story to form a complete narrative about what happened on the river when Grethel was thirteen, and how this event has impacted Grethel‘s life and relationship to her estranged and demented mother, Sarah.

I really liked this book, and out of the 5 #ManBooker novels I‘ve read, this is my fave. I get why this isn‘t for everyone, but I found it moving and beautiful.

Kalalalatja @Cinfhen @Cathythoughts the cover is just stunning 👌 6y
aeeklund SO good to hear! When I was reading about all the longlist books, I definitely pegged this as a “could go either way” type of book. I can‘t wait to get my hands on this! (edited) 6y
BarbaraBB Your fave so far, wow. I didn‘t like it as much as you did but I love your review and can see why you love it. 6y
Kalalalatja @aeeklund every book with the word “myth” in its description gets some interest from me, and it turned out to be a sort of retelling of af Greek myth, but it is kind og spoiler-y to say which one 6y
Kalalalatja @BarbaraBB I think this just hit me at the right time. I don‘t think it is a perfect book, but out of the 5 I‘ve read so far, I like this the best. But I get why it gets mixed reviews, it isn‘t for everyone 🤷‍♀️ 6y
emilyhaldi Phew! So relieved that the beautiful cover includes a beautiful story 💙 6y
aeeklund @Kalalalatja !!!!! SUUUUUUPER intrigued now... 6y

Mehso-so

This could have been great. It had so much going for it, but in the end, it turned out to be the beginning of three novels which got tied together in 20 pages or so.

This book tells the story of Fahrouk, a refugee, Lampy, a young man struggling, and John, a sort of bad guy. I was a lot more interested in Fahrouk‘s story but it felt like it was just added to the book for the drama and emotionality, not for its own sake.

BarbaraBB I so agree with you. 6y
JamieArc Me too! 6y
Dolly That‘s a disappointment. I wonder if I should pass it up? 6y
Redwritinghood Agree 💯 %. Beautiful writing and well-developed characters, but disappointing story. 6y

I‘m quite #headoverheels in love with these #MBL2018 covers 😍 Although I wasn‘t a huge fan of The Water Cure, and I have seen mixed reviews for the tagged book and Everything Under, I‘m still pretty excited to read them all. I really hope I‘ll like some of them at least! 🤞

#ABBAinAugust

Cathythoughts Look forward to your review on the tagged one. I read another if his & loved it 6y
Mdargusch Wow! I‘m with you. I love the cover on the Water Cure but Milkman! 💗💗💗 6y

saresmoore They are exceptional covers this year. 6y
Kalalalatja @Cathythoughts I just started it tonight, and so far, so good 🤞 @Mdargusch I know! The colors on Milkman are just stunning 💕 @JennyM @saresmoore I really like the cover for The Overstory too, but I haven‘t gotten it from the library yet 👌 6y
emilyhaldi Wow I might be buying these just for the covers 😍 please read ASAP and let me know if I should proceed with my plan 😂😂 6y
Kalalalatja @emilyhaldi lol! I‘m thinking The Water Cure is a #borrownotbuy, but I‘ll let you know about the rest 😄👍 6y
Emilymdxn I really loved Everything Under and I did enjoy the Water Cure a lot tho it wasn‘t my absolute fave, I think you‘re gonna have fun reading these! 6y
Meredith3 Omg what a beautiful group of books! Awesome pic! 6y
Kalalalatja @Emilymdxn I hope so! 🤞 @Meredith3 I know, the Man Booker cover game is strong this year 👏👏 6y

Warlight: A novel | Michael Ondaatje

Panpan

There‘s no doubt that Ondaatje can write beautifully. Unfortunately, the beautiful writing just wasn‘t enough to really grab me and make me interested in the story. It might have been the audio, but I struggled with keeping up with the time shifts, and the story felt forced at times. I was more interested in the first part of the book about Nathaniel‘s experiences with crime, but it still felt like Ondaatje could have done more.

#MBL2018

BarbaraBB Oh man, another disappointing one... 6y
Kalalalatja @BarbaraBB I don‘t know if it‘s the prize-hype that make every book feel a bit underwhelming 🤷‍♀️ 6y
ChristaS I feel the same way as you about the audio. It sounded beautiful but I just couldn't get into it 6y

The Water Cure | Sophie Mackintosh

Mehso-so

In this dystopian book, three sisters are living with their parents, and are undergoing different “therapies” to cure them of contamination from the outside. But one day three men arrive, and everything changes.

This book reminded me of “Gather the Daughters”, “The Power”, and “The Handmaid‘s Tale”, but without being as engaging. So much is left unsaid, and I would have liked to have the context explained a bit more.

Tashreads I haven‘t seen any glowing reviews about any of the Booker Long List. Disappointing 😞 6y
RaimeyGallant Interesting premise. 6y
TrishB You were a bit kinder than me! 6y

ephemeralwaltz Would still like to read this despite so many mixed reviews! 6y
emilyhaldi Yeah I think I‘ll be unstacking based on your review 😏 6y
BarbaraBB I guess I liked it a bit better than you (comparing to The Power all is better, in my opinion 😉), for me it was between a pick and a so-so 6y
BarbaraBB @emilyhaldi No need to read this one indeed 😉 6y
Kalalalatja @Tashreads I have seen som love for this, but haven‘t read it yet 6y
Kalalalatja @RaimeyGallant it is! I had high hopes, because it sounded just like my kind of book! 6y
Kalalalatja @TrishB A bit, but I think it‘s because it didn‘t really give me any emotional reaction. At least you got angry while reading it, I‘m just a bit meh at the moment 🤷‍♀️ 6y
Kalalalatja @ephemeralwaltz go for it! It might be just the book for you 🤞 6y
Kalalalatja @emilyhaldi haha, you won‘t miss anything 😉 @BarbaraBB I liked The Power better than this 😂 I don‘t know, I just think this was a bit boring and meh for me, while The Power at least had a bit of action 😉 6y
RadicalReader @Kalalalatja absolutely gorgeous book mark I swear it came with the equally lovely book‘s cover 6y
