Zone One: A Novel | Colson Whitehead
post image
Mehso-so

I really had to push myself to pick up and continue reading this one. In fact, I might have bailed but I needed to complete it for a challenge. I think Whitehead writes beautifully, but sometimes I just wanted to scream get on with it. #LRC4 #litsyreadingchallenge #startswithletterZ

MoniqueReads305 I listened to it in audiobook and at first had to push myself to finish it. It's really slow going for a book about a zombie apocalypse. 6y
LibrarianRyan The book in the background looks fun. 6y
Bookzombie @MoniqueReads305 Yes, very slow going. 6y
Bookzombie @LibrarianRyan Thanks! It was a gift one year so I just put it on the tree now since it‘s such a small book. 6y

I'm trying very hard to complete the #LitsyReadingChallenge and the #LitsyAtoZ , so I read this for #LRC4 and #LetterZ Not sure if I liked it necessarily, but it was disturbingly interesting. An interesting take on the mind of a serial killer.

This book was recommended by a friend as a different kind of gothic novel from what I had read, and I really enjoyed it. I don‘t quite know how to describe the story without giving too much information, but I appreciated the strength of Princess Ziska and how it turned a few gothic tropes on their heads. For example, the man is the one who is so overcome that he faints, and in one scene he distracts himself with the “frothiest of French novels.”

Zeitoun | Dave Eggers

Pickpick

This book is a must-read. Eggers has an amazing talent for portraying someone's else's story with empathy and insight. Zeitoun, a Syrian immigrant and small business owner, stays in New Orleans during and after Katrina when his family evacuated. Covers the devastation of Katrina, how easily the freedoms we believe are guaranteed can break down, and islamophobia. #nonfiction #litsatoz #letterE #readeverywhere #lrc4

Wife One of my all time favorites!🌹 7y
LeahBergen Great book! 7y

LeahBergen That was an amazing (and harrowing) book, too! 7y
ApoptyGina69 I loved this book! I adore Dave Eggers' work anyway, but this one in particular. 7y
Blaire @ApoptyGina69 me too. This book and what is the what are both favorites. 7y
Wife @Blaire I read that too! Great book, but what a nightmare! I work at a hospital and can't even imagine... 7y
Blaire @Wife @LeahBergen right? The decisions that had to be made, the lack of supplies, the miscommunication. I can't begin to imagine. 7y

Whoa! This was an extensive study regarding 1st century Palestine, the history of the Jewish people , the Roman Empire's rule over Judea & the historical context of the life/times of Jesus. The author challenges some of Christianity's basic beliefs but my background is minimal so I can't comment. I appreciated the amount of research that was done & the way Aslan laid out the information in a clear and fascinating manner. #LRC4 #LetterZ #Google

saresmoore Fabulous review! I was waiting to hear what you thought—sounds great to me. 7y
saresmoore Also, author's name is Aslan. I mean. Aslan in Narnia also challenged much of Christians' basic religious doctrine. I'm in! 7y
britt_brooke Great review, excellent book! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 7y

Reviewsbylola This sounds like it could get boring very quickly so a great author is key. (edited) 7y
Cinfhen 😂true that @Reviewsbylola I was slightly relieved to see the book was under 200 pages, I was starting to reach my limit 😉 7y
Cinfhen Thanks @saresmoore @britt_brooke I'm curious to see how others find this book. I know it caused a bit of a stir and the author received a lot of backlash 😬 7y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen So, out of sheer curiosity's sake, I read Bill O'Reilly's "Killing Jesus" right after I finished this one. Let's just say, Reza Aslan is far more qualified. ??‍♀️ (edited) 7y
saresmoore Sounds like a good reason to read it! 7y
britt_brooke @saresmoore Precisely, lol! 7y
Cinfhen I have to agree @britt_brooke I read Killing Jesus for book club or Killing Jesus for Dummies. I find all of his books to be pretty watered down..Our book club also read 7y
LeahBergen I saw this author interviewed on a talk show and he was amazing. 7y
Cinfhen I saw him give an interview as well @LeahBergen He's extremely knowledgeable and great personality, very charming 🙌🏻 7y
LeeRHarry This is a book club read for me later in the year - looking forward to it even more now! 😊 7y
