I *think* this is my last Dutch recipe: kibbeling: https://www.196flavors.com/netherlands-kibbeling/
They're basically bite-size battered fish. They're less of a faff than full-size battered fish and the addition of a spice rub was nice. The recipe called for a full tablespoon of ground bay leaf, which I felt was a lot, so I only put a fraction, and still it was all I could taste! Will make again.

Dilara I also made deep-fried mushrooms with the left over batter, as well as fries and aïoli, or “knoflook saus“ 😁. And served all this nutritional nightmare with lettuce 😇 As the French name for this type of lettuce is “batavia“, it felt right 😅 6mo
Bookwormjillk Well as long as you added lettuce 😂 6mo

Pickpick

Chevalier imagines the “girl with the pearl earring” is the Vermeer family maid and this is her story. Griet is fascinated by Vermeer‘s paintings especially when he gets her to help him prepare the color paints. She develops an eye for his paintings, but she‘s just a maid and must keep her place while also being his model. And she must be especially careful around his jealous wife and her cunning daughter. A slow but still interesting read. ⬇️

Pickpick

Tulipomania and the Golden Age of Dutch Art entwined together so tightly that one can't tell the difference between lust and greed.

The climax brings to mind the moment when George Bailey of Its A Wonderful Life becomes unhinged toward Uncle Billy.

An innocent act brings the downfall of several characters.

Readergrrl I belong to a fine arts studio and one of our instructors is Carlo Russo who is a floral oil painter of the Dutch Masters style. He has taught us so much about tulip mania! I will show him this book! You should check out his work. His tulip paintings are gorgeous!! 🌷 6mo

He has seen cities to dream about: the gleaming domes of Constantinople; the ravishing, mirrored streets of Venice, corrupt and seductive, like Amsterdam's wanton sister.

Last week, I made kletskoppen, using this online recipe: https://www.thespruceeats.com/classic-kletskoppen-recipe-1128529 and not the tagged book. I divided the amounts by 10. The batter spread so much it ended up being 1 giant rectangular cookie, that I then cut into pieces. I was hoping they'd be like almond thins, but lacier. The flavour profile was v. similar, but they were thicker and really hard. I've got to try again and concentrate!

Dilara Loved the flavour, had to dip them in coffee to not lose a tooth 😂

#two4Tuesday

1) As an attorney, I routinely have to deal with attorneys on the opposite side of my case. I hate it when I lose my temper with them because they are rude or lie or speak down to me because I‘m a woman. I wish I could keep my cool and often I can. But sometimes I just lose it. 🤬

2) Griet is 16 and a new maid to artist Vermeer‘s family. She‘s struggling with the job and wants to go home even though she does the same work there.

Butterfinger That is one of my red flags, too, Karen. I can't stand when a man is condescending or calls me honey to calm me down. 7mo
TheSpineView So with you on #1! Thanks for playing 7mo
wanderinglynn I feel your pain. Heaven forbid a woman project any emotion except subservient contentment. And if we do, then it‘s all “calm down”, “you‘re being irrational/hysterical/[insert patriarchal insult here]. 🤬 7mo
