Clear case of Middle Book in a Trilogy syndrome at play here. The back half of this crawled in terms of plot with a ton of focus on YA willful dramarama.

No longer Team Mal…but I‘m not sure I want to be on Team Alina either. 🤷🏻‍♀️🫣 Nikolai was the best part of this book by far. ☀️ 🏴‍☠️

When YA fantasy also kind of feels relevant to real life… 🫣🤷🏻‍♀️

Only 40 pages in and I already see another contender join the ring of this Love Triangle? Bardugo playing 3D Chess. Will I come out of Part 2 still playing for Team Mal? 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️🫣

Sometime shortly, I shall delve back into the Grishaverse as promised. 🥹👋🏻

Bardugo's “Grishaverse“ is inspired by world history and mythology, and here she takes some of the classic tales of our world and shows how they might have played out in hers. The prose is gorgeously and emotionally fraught; although not really any darker than the originals, they expose the darkness in different ways.

I thought this was a really solid YA fantasy trilogy. Glad Bardugo was chosen for #AuthorAMonth, otherwise these books may have sat unread on my shelves for who knows how long! My editions also included a short story about Genya and a prelude about The Darkling as a child.

I‘m planning to keep an eye out for a used copy of the Six of Crows Duology, and I expect I‘ll like that just as much if not more. 🙂👍👍

Book 2 for #AuthorAMonth 🙂📚. It‘s pretty rare I read more than one for any given month, but I‘m thinking I might move right on tho book 3 since I have it.

I agree with others that the common YA trope of refusing to communicate because of fear of the other‘s reaction (self-gaslighting) was annoying. But the story is compelling and I feel like so far the Netflix series did a pretty good job of keeping pace with the books.

Even better than the first book. Complex, dark, twisty and achingly romantic, as the characters fight for their lives and their loves, battles they may not be able to win. Includes one of the most powerful scenes of hand-holding ever written.

The Grishaverse of it all has been on my TBR for years. I initially thought to start with Six of Crows but when researching, Shadow & Bone was the recommended entry point. This prequel was alluded to having spoilers, but since I‘m going into this totally cold, I decided to start here. 💙 👤
