“The dog it was that died.” I had to Google the line as I‘d never read Goldsmith‘s satiric elegy. OUCH!

Very fitting summation of the novel. Both Kitty and her husband Walter are difficult characters to like and empathize with, but are most definitely human in being their own worst enemies.

The reference to Chinese staff as “boy(s)” was grating each time I heard it, but is apropos to the era.

KathyWheeler I really liked the movie of this as well. 2mo
Cathythoughts That‘s a great cover too. Stacked. 2mo
Tamra @KathyWheeler I will look for it! 2mo

Over generations, the gene pool of the first farmers became increasingly dominated by individuals who could drink beer on a regular basis. Most of the world‘s population today is made up of descendants of those early beer drinkers, and we have largely inherited their genetic tolerance for alcohol.🍻🍺

#2023ReRead
There has been a question floating around - If you could read a book again for the first time what book?
Luckily (?) with my bad memory this isn't an issue for me. I haven't read this in years and while I sort of knew where it was going I was again caught unawares of the events.
I knew the language was gorgeous, & again I was very taken with the writing. I had forgotten how awful Kitty was as a person it is so interesting to see 👇

ChaoticMissAdventures Her evolution and still wish for more for (and from) her. I love this reread as much as I did years ago, the book has such a rich yet brutal feel. 8mo

Y'all this book sucked me in! I'm trying to do better about my #nonfiction reading and this book focuses on the cholera outbreak in London. This was a fascinating read part medical thriller part medical mystery and well paced. #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

For #readingtheamericas2023 I selected this title for Barbados. Again this is one of my favorite historical authors and I feel she did a wonderful job pulling the reader into her world. She did a very good job bringing this country to life as well as historic details and situations many know little about. #bookspin @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle @TheAromaofBooks

My husband and I needed the equivalent of a weekend away from the farm to take a little break, so we‘ve spent the last few days on Oahu relaxing. And here‘s my small haul from their Barnes and Noble! We really don‘t have any good bookstores at home, so it was lovely to have a nice relaxing browse.

Sophronisba Oooh, I've had my eye on Before We Were Trans. And The Ghost Map is great.

Enjoy your time away!

A classic novel of socio-economics, religion, redemption, love, and obsession. In the 1920's, socialite Kitty marries the Dr. Walter Fane out of convenience and accompanies him to China during a cholera epidemic. There she drifts into an affair with a married general and finds purpose and faith in her life.

This was a throughly engaging read about the story of cholera and the work that was done behind the scenes to create a modern day epidemiology field within medicine. It included a chapter on the Map created. By John Snow, that told the story of how the map he made allowed for an understanding of what cholera was doing
