I didn't *adore* this one, but as I've observed before, with these short story collections from the British Library Crime Classics collections, they're often more than the sum of their parts. It makes for a fun survey of classic crime in the period, and there were a couple I liked quite a bit -- R. Austin Freeman's stories are always so detailed, for instance.

Aaand that was my #BookSpin!

This is the #BookSpin, so I settled down to read it today! It's taking me a bit longer than I'd expected, quite a few of the short stories are quite long.

Half the time I am absolutely not using my new chair (a recliner) in the way it was designed, but it's cosy. Illustration: a photo I took earlier to show a friend my silliness.

Clare-Dragonfly Well you can‘t just sit *one* way in a recliner… or any chair… 2d
shanaqui @Clare-Dragonfly I was very tempted to turn completely upside down on it, but decided that was asking for trouble... 13h

bookandbedandtea All of these sound good! My first choices would be Death Of An Author or Entry Island but I'd be happy with any of them. 2w
Jerdencon All sound good to me. I like entry island too. 2w
TheAromaofBooks @bookandbedandtea @Jerdencon - Okay, I think I'll go with Entry Island. I've really enjoyed a couple of May's other books!! 7d

As usual with these anthologies, this was more than the sum of its parts -- it's fascinating to get a survey across the “classic“ period for mysteries from different authors and perspectives. There were some fun stories in there, but a certain amount of meh too, as always.

1. Sitting up. But, I do read in bed a while before falling asleep.

2. The tagged book. Great short #mystery stories, all set on trains.

Ok so here‘s what happened … somebody here posted about their British Library Crime Classic subscription and I thought, ooh, I want that! So I decided to give it to myself for my upcoming 50th birthday. But then I was like, nah, shipping to the US every single month is too wasteful and expensive. And then … I had an idea … 💡😃

CSeydel (Cont‘d)… I ordered myself 12 books, mostly crime classics, but a couple from the Women Writers and Weird Tales series (seriously, who can resist a book called “Spores of Doom: Dank Tales of the Fungal Weird”??) I‘m going to wrap them and deliver them to myself one per month. I still get the books and the fun — and I saved a ton of money 💸 3mo
CSeydel But don‘t they look simply delicious #BritishLibraryCrimeClassics 3mo

Preferring crime novels with some excitement and a reasonable amount of action, both of these attributes were missing from this story. However it was a book I chose to read simply because it was historical fiction in the literal sense having been written 91 years ago.It could be classed as a cosy mystery but without the present day embience and warmth that you come to expect. While it was a good read I do like a more modern style of writing.

January 2025 Book #2
Dimpsie invited some friends from the theater to spend Christmas with him in his castle located in a private island near to Edinburgh. Dimpsie was found dead near to the tree which appear to be an accidental death…Dun Dun Dunnnand the drama begins….
Quite predictable 😏 with some funny scenes but predictable. I enjoyed it as a holiday read. It should be a so-so but I usually enjoy these crime classic stories🤷🏽‍♀️3⭐️

Gissy #BookSpinBingo #8 -still holiday (in PR holidays continue until mid January😂) #ISpyBingo (blue cover -dark blue😜) @TheAromaOfBooks #GoodReadsAroundTheYear prompt #28= set in winter 5mo

Mehso-so

I don't want to give this too much of a hard time because it's mostly fine. All the ingredients were there, but the overall result was a little bland. It's set in the early 70's when London was swinging and that seeps in here and there, but the style felt very old-fashioned. Worst of all are a couple of toxic relationships, where borderline DV is treated as romantic.
