Ficciones | Jorge Luis Borges

Pickpick

This book of short stories is slim - but it took me a month to mentally scale the lofty (but beautiful) prose, dense with philosophy, history and theology. Borges is a master of magical realism (perhaps veering closer to fantasy and esoterica): his stories are riveting imaginings concerning the impermanence of time, the symbolic nature of labyrinths, the ambiguity of authorship, as well as how eternity may manifest on a human scale.

Thanks for the tag @dabbe 😀

1. It's not terribly original, but it's hard to beat a dragon. Or maybe a sea serpent - I love to swim, and I could hang out in Lake Champlain with our own resident monster, Champ (though I guess that would make me a lake serpent 🐍 🤔).

2. The tagged book has ALL the creatures! 🐲🐉🧛‍♀️👾👻

I was totally charmed by this category defying book. It‘s part biography (of 3 different people from 3 different interests and times) and part history of philosophy; it‘s a damn good read. I let it lead my imagination through space-time and beyond. Now I‘m obsessed with Borges. Such an excellent and inspiring book! ⏳ 🌌 📚

Aimeesue The ebook was on sale today so I bought it based on your enthusiastic rec! Thanks! 4mo

I enjoy some non fiction all year, but towards the end of October as I begin thinking about November‘s #bookspin list I start getting excited for #NonFictionNovember. I don‘t know how it got started, but I love spending a month focused on nonfiction. Here are a few titles I might read.

Will you participate? Any books you‘re looking forward to?

Soubhiville @AllDebooks I have already read and really loved 2y
JenReadsAlot I thought The Five was great! And I'm getting my NF list ready too 🙂 2y
Bookwormjillk I read The Five last year and liked it. Plan to participate again this year. 2y

bookishdawg Have fun! “The Beautiful Forevers…” is amazing ❤️ 2y
Deblovestoread Oooo, I need to get my #NFN list together. 2y
AllDebooks Oh yes, count me in. I love non-fic. The Five was amazing, such a sympathetic account of each woman. 2y
AllDebooks @Soubhiville It's so good, isn't it. So unique for it's time and cited so many times in other works now. 2y
BookNAround I‘ve got almost my entire bookspin board covered with non-fiction for November. 2y
Hooked_on_books I‘ll definitely be reading NF, since I do all the time! I have this one checked out from the library and look forward to reading it: 2y
vivastory @Hooked_on_books I read that one last year. It's pretty wild! 1y
Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books I watched the movie and couldn‘t believe a place like that existed! I bet the book will be excellent! 1y
AnnR Although it wasn't specifically planned because it is November, I coincidentally will be reading more nonfiction than usual with #PemberLittens and #NaturaLitsy. I also plan to read (edited) 1y

Pickpick

Thought-provoking short fantasy stories by Argentinian writer Borges published in the 1940s, which influenced the magic realism movement later. Themes include mythical spaces, dreams, immortality time travel and the perception of time, reflections on the nature of consciousness and the illusory self, the relationship between God and creation. I would have enjoyed this even more if I had some knowledge of metaphysics and the hermetic writings.

Graywacke Your comments make this sound amazing…and accessible. I‘ve been a little intimidated of Borges. 2y
IuliaC @Graywacke Oh, but I am totally intimated too, felt discouraged while reading the first one and still not sure if I grasped 1% of what the stories were actually supposed to convey, but they left me with interesting feelings 2y
Graywacke Ok, that‘s less encouraging. 😆 Still, seriously, sounds terrific. (edited) 2y
