After reading this, I must admit that I‘m glad I‘ve never read any of Orwell‘s book. There‘s no pedestal to push him down from

He hardly mentions his wife in his correspondence and books, even when she‘s there helping him out. Which makes it easier for his previous biographers to not include her either. He‘s also a cheater and on at least two occasions he‘s trying to force himself on women. And still there‘s more red flags surrounding him.

AnneCecilie And in the best possible way, the book reads more like a fiction than a nonfiction in that it pulls you into the story and you just have to keep on reading (edited) 9h

I'm so glad the library had this in audio: the memoir of queer, Muslim, drag queen Glamrou (with brief detours via marine biology and Eton), it felt only right to hear their story told in their own voice. It's courageous, moving, inspiring, and dark with flashes of humour.

This is what's great about reading: 45+ years with a book in my hand and still I get to be surprised by the paths they lead me along.

Suet624 Your last paragraph: I feel the same way. It‘s pretty amazing. 3d

Alyisha, I just received the most gorgeous, decadent package from you and Moxie Crimefighter! Thank you so much for all the gifts! I feel very spoiled and I can‘t wait to dive into this beautiful book and my new tea! And thank you for another amazing year of #auldlangspine

P.S. Cedric approves, and says bunnies smell weird and amazing and he‘d like to meet one someday!

monalyisha I love that Cedric and Moxie got to share this moment! And I‘m glad the package lived up to the wait. 😉 3d

Grief Is for People | Sloane Crosley

Pickpick

I read my last self-help book on grief years ago, but can‘t quit a memoir of someone with the words to document their own unique experience. Sloane was grieving the violation of a home robbery (jewelry inherited from her mean grandmother) when hit with a grief no one anticipated – the suicide of her one-time boss, and best friend Russell. ⚠️ TW: This could hit hard if moving through a friend‘s suicide remains a struggle to a reader.👇

marleed There is a who-was-he-to-you element to her experience since she was neither Russell‘s partner or family member, I sympathize with this. I remember returning to work after the funeral of one of the few mentors in my adult life. I must have looked a wreck as I explained to a questioning
coworker I‘d been at a funeral. His response - and I kid you not - Well, who was she to you? 😳 👇

marleed Also, if you have memories (like I do) of reading the tagged when all the 💩 hit the fan, there‘s a super interesting account here because both Sloane and Russell were publicists for this book. 👇 4d
marleed I googled Russell Perreault after reading this which lead me to his Instagram - and scrolling down 3 years of his feed. Well, that made me sad - gone too soon. 4d

#WeeklyForecast

I‘m currently reading three books; the poetry collection Physical which I hope to finish, Wifedom that I want to continue reading and Marklund‘s latest crime novel. The only thing with the Marklund is that is thought it was translated into Norwegian and it‘s the Swedish edition and I wasn‘t quite present for that.

I also want to read the latest crime novel from Bolt and start The Silent Death

AnneCecilie This will also be my tbr for the #MarvellousMarch readathon @Andrew65 4d

This book focuses on how the doctor becomes a patient himself with advanced stage prostate cancer. In general, most medical professionals make the worst patients and I can make this declaration as a medical professional myself. There always a struggle with the vulnerability of being the patient after years of helping others. It's easier to see the struggles in others probably more so to avoid acknowledging our own issues.

When you‘re still in a reading slump four months later, but decide you want to read a little non-fiction, you pull anything off your shelf that looks remotely interesting and read bits of each of them until something catches your interest.

On a more personal note, I‘m officially done work now until October 2025! 😅 Three weeks until the little one is due, so I‘m just trying to keep busy while trying to rest and relax. ❤️

Suet624 October 2025. You must live in a more civilized nation than the US. (edited) 6d
Cuilin @Suet624 I thought the same thing. 6d
AmyG Enjoy your last few months. Ha, I couldn‘t read when pregnant. Hope the slump eases. 6d

Clwojick @Suet624 Lol! Yes, I‘m in Ontario, Canada. My position at the hospital will be held for 18 months. 😊 I went off a little early, but that‘s on a sick leave, so it doesn‘t affect my maternity leave. Definitely grateful! 5d
Clwojick @sebrittainclark awe! Yay! When are you due? My due date is the 19th, but I‘m thinking I‘ll be induced at 39 weeks. 😊 5d

Gripping, infuriating, inspiring, heart-breaking, hopeful.
There's no way I can do justice to the amount of eloquence born out of serious research that this book represents, but I can say that instead of a vague notion of the pop-culture icon identity of these two figures, I am much better acquainted with the historical Malcolm and Martin. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? I appreciate that enough time has passed for the similarities in goals to outweigh the contentions in method in viewing the two figures.
It's more a history than a dual biography, but does very well in focusing in on the contributions to anti-racist, anti-colonial activism, the seeking of economic justice, the historic fight for civil, human, rights, not just in America but for people of colour globally, that both men fought for.
6d
Robotswithpersonality 3/? I also appreciated how going year by year chronologically through each man's contributions to the anti-racist and civil rights movements gave insight into the work of fellow Black activists, mentors and mentees for the two men. 6d
Robotswithpersonality 4/? I will say it's clear that religion bolstered their connection to communities and social movements, but it continually made my atheist self uncomfortable to read, especially as it influenced the two men in their treatment of women. You see improvements later in their life after extensive work around female activists, but the author is clear about how much was left to be desired in including gender equality in what was being fought for. 6d

Robotswithpersonality 5/5 I find myself less inclined to read a biography of each after this intensive run down of their periods of activism, but more interested in picking up collections of their writing/speeches (though I gather the original source of much of King's writing is under debate?).
Of course, I'd also like to do some reading about Black activism in Canada. First up: books on Viola Desmond.
⚠️Racism, racist violence, racially motivated murder

Suet624 Thank you for such a thoughtful review. This sounds like an excellent book. I would add that men in general in the 60‘s and 70‘s treated women poorly. 6d
Robotswithpersonality @Suet624 Thanks! Valid additional context, yes, it certainly wasn't just them! 5d
