Thanks to @TrishB for putting this on my #readersradar as I don‘t think I would have picked it up otherwise.

Even so, I found it rather slow in the first couple of chapters and, as I‘m a bit fed up of ‘feminist retellings‘, I considered bailing.

Then I suddenly became engrossed and wanted to learn all about the life and art of Artemisia Gentileschi at the start of the seventeenth century in Italy - a wonderful book!

LeahBergen What a cosy setting! 😊 5mo
Caroline2 Oh I‘m glad you liked it! 👍 I‘m still stuck on my current read (birdsong) I‘ve had so little reading time lately, it‘s taking me agessssss! 5mo
TrishB I‘m so glad you stuck with it! 5mo

The Passion of Artemisia | Susan Vreeland

The life of Artemisia Gentileschi, the first woman accepted into the Accademia dell‘ Arte in Florence.

What a lush novel! The way Vreeland paints a beautiful scene, and an unflinching portrait of a passionate and ambitious and flawed woman. Also loved the attention paid to Artemisia‘s process and artwork. I definitely had to look up every single painting as I read. Will be seeking out more of Vreeland‘s work! 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

BookmarkTavern The first three chapters deal with the aftermath of Artemisia‘s rape by her painting instructor, her public trial, and the torture she endured for her testimony 6mo

I have loved Artemisia Gentileschi since learning about her in a Women in Art class in college so I had to read this. I worried that since I already knew quite a bit about her life I wouldn‘t enjoy a fictional account but I was still interested in Fremantle‘s version and very much moved by Gentileschi‘s strength and perseverance. I wanted it to cover in more of her life as there was so much to come but understood why it focused on what it did.

PurpleyPumpkin You might enjoy this one too! 6mo
TrishB And this one . She fascinated me too! 6mo
