A riveting novel based on the life of Artemisia Gentileschithe greatest female painter of the Renaissanceas she forges her own destiny in a world dominated by the will of men. This is the ring that you gave me, and these are your promises. A young woman is put on trial. She has accused her painting teacher of the darkest betrayal - he accuses her of being an immoral liar. What really happened, and why will this trial scandalize seventeenth-century Rome? Rome 1611. A jewel-bright place of change, with sumptuous new palaces and lavish wealth on constant display. A city where women are seen but not heard. Artemisia Gentileschi dreams of becoming a great artist. Motherless, she grows up among a family of painters - men and boys. She knows she is more talented than her brothers, but she cannot choose her own future. She belongs to her father and will belong to a husband. As Artemisia patiently goes from lesson to lesson, perfecting her craft, a mysterious tutor enters her life. Tassi is a dashing figure, handsome and worldly, and for a moment he represents everything that a life of freedom might offer. But then the unthinkable happens. A violent act that threatens Artemisia's honor, and her virtue. In the eyes of her family, Artemisia should accept her fate. In the eyes of the law, she is the villain. But Artemisia is a survivor. And this is her story to tell.

Thanks to @TrishB for putting this on my #readersradar as I don‘t think I would have picked it up otherwise.

Even so, I found it rather slow in the first couple of chapters and, as I‘m a bit fed up of ‘feminist retellings‘, I considered bailing.

Then I suddenly became engrossed and wanted to learn all about the life and art of Artemisia Gentileschi at the start of the seventeenth century in Italy - a wonderful book!

LeahBergen What a cosy setting! 😊 5mo

I have loved Artemisia Gentileschi since learning about her in a Women in Art class in college so I had to read this. I worried that since I already knew quite a bit about her life I wouldn‘t enjoy a fictional account but I was still interested in Fremantle‘s version and very much moved by Gentileschi‘s strength and perseverance. I wanted it to cover in more of her life as there was so much to come but understood why it focused on what it did.

PurpleyPumpkin You might enjoy this one too! 6mo

Brilliant historical, feminist retelling of this artist. I‘m sorry to say I hadn‘t heard of the artist and was gutted I could have seen her work a couple of weeks ago in London if I‘d have read this sooner. An excuse for another trip.
I have now ordered half of the authors back catalogue.
I‘d like to say women‘s lives have got better. But only for some women.
